Lhasa - Sala Rossa - November 17th 2007

Band : Lhasa
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 17th 2007
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Well, we came for the opening act and we decided to stay for Lhasa. Gladly, the audience had quieted down. I only know Lhasa's duet with The Tindersticks. Not really my kind of music but a nice show anyways.

Esmerine - Sala Rossa - November 17th 2007

Band : Esmerine
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 17th 2007
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
Red Fire Farm
Histories, Repeating As One Thousand Hearts Mend
Nohna's Lullabye
There Were No Footprints In The Dust Behind Them...
Mados

Comments : This is the perfect example of how a "bobo" audience can ruin your evening. I really enjoy Esmerine's albums, but thanks to these middle age women having a girls night out I suffered a very lound non stop conversation somewhere between Ally Mc Beal and Sex & The City... and they just wouldn't stop (especially that white trash blonde). The venue was packed for Lhasa who was headlining and there was not really anywhere to move.

The Locust - Le Studio Juste Pour Rire - November 15th

Band : The Locust
Venue : Le Studio Juste Pour Rire
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 15th 2007
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Well, I have always enjoyed to see The Locust live, but I found tonight's show simply disappointing. I do not know how to explain it, but I really did not really get into it this time.

Thursday, 8 November 2007

The Drones - La Tulipe - November 8th 2007

Band : The Drones
Venue : La Tulipe
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 8th 2007
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

Comments : Nice show for that Australian band who played here their first show in Montreal; We did not stay for Band Of Horses who were headlining.

Friday, 2 November 2007

Band : Whilst
Venue : Main Hall
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 2nd 2007
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : An evening of experimental super8 cinema, including one live performance by Whilst. Karl Lemieux's live projections/visual experimentations fit really well with the music. A nice evening, a nice show.

Wednesday, 24 October 2007

Jesu - Sala Rossa - October 24th 2008

Band : Jesu
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 24th 2007
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I am a long time fan of Godflesh and Justin Broadrick, and never had the chance to see him live as Jesu. A very good show as expected.

Saturday, 20 October 2007

Knurl - Casa Del Popolo - October 20th 2007

Band : Knurl
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 20th 2007
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Knurl keeps that old-school industrial attitute by building his own instruments himself into metal. That was definitely something I wanted to see. A very powerful, loud, and short show. Very enjoyable as expected, but thanks to my earplugs.

Comments : The second time I see them at Le National this year. I still really like this band, and I found this show much better than a few months ago.

Sandro Perri - Le National - October 19th 2007

Band : Sandro Perri
Venue : Le National
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 19th 2007
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Well, to be honest I would have never watched this show if Sandro Perri was not on Constellation, my favorite label. I was never into Polmo Polpo either and I found this show really boring.

Friday, 5 October 2007

Patti Smith - Eglise St-Jean Baptiste - October 5th 2007

Pissing In A River
Babelogue

Comments : My previous experiences of going to see an electric concert in a church have been disastrous soundwise. I was a bit sceptical for tonight, but everything was fine this time. That was my first Patti Smith show ever and that was a really great one. The Nirvana cover was amazing.

Wednesday, 3 October 2007

Pere Ubu - Le National - October 3rd 2007

Band : Pere Ubu
Venue : Le National
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 3rd 2007

Interpol - Osheaga Festival - September 9th 2007

Band : Interpol
Venue : Osheaga Festival
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 9th 2007

Setlist :
Pioneer To The Falls
Obstacle 1
Slow Hands
C'mere
NARC
Rest My Chemistry
Mammoth
Evil
No I In Threesome
The Heinrich Maneuver
Not Even Jail
PDA

Comments : The only band I wanted to see on that day and the only band I went to see. The location of the Osheaga festival is very convenient and you can actually access the island by metro. Another really good show by Interpol even if I am not so keen on the lattest album. However I still prefer to see them in a venue than in a big open air festival.

Explosions In The Sky - Osheaga Festival - September 8th 2007

Band : Explosions In The Sky

Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
First Breath After Coma
Welcome, Ghosts

Comments : An amazing concert. I wanted to see them live for ages, and they haven't disappointed me at all. EITS is as good live as on their albums. Thank you.

Blonde Redhead - Osheaga Festival - September 8th 2007

Band : Blonde Redhead
Venue : Osheaga Festival
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 8th 2007
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Dr. Strangeluv
Spring And By Summer Fall
23
Falling Man
The Dress
SW
Equus
(We Are A Real Team) Harry And I

Comments : I really love Blonde Redhead. There is something between Lush and Sonic Youth in this band, and they are getting more subtile with every new album. This is the second time I see them live this year, after a sold out show at the infamous Club Soda. Another really good show.

Extra : video

The Editors - Osheaga Festival - September 8th 2007

Band : The Editors
Venue : Osheaga Festival
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 8th 2007
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

Comments : I had never heared of them before this show. Some nice old fashioned britpop with a singer trying to sound like Ian Curtis. Quite enjoyable.

Monday, 27 August 2007

Stereo Total - La Tulipe - August 27th 2007

Band : Stereo Total
Venue : La Tulipe
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : August 27th 2007
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : This is one of these shows you want to see, but where no one wants to come with you. If I hadn't bought my ticket in advance I would have probably stayed home that night. I waited till the last minute to get to the venue, avoiding the 3 or 4 opening bands and finaly it was worth the trip. A nice show, worth seeing.

Saturday, 25 August 2007

Camera Obscura - Le National - August 25th 2007

Let's Get Out Of This Country
Dory Previn
Suspended From Class
Super Trouper
Razzle Dazzle Rose
Baby Don't Go (Sony & Cher cover)
Eighties Fan

Comments : A nice show, although I really enjoyed their show at the Sala Rossa more earlier this year.

Saturday, 4 August 2007

Vive La Fête - Festival Divers Cité - August 4th 2007

Band : Vive La Fête
Venue : Festival Divers Cité
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : August 4th 2007
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Divers Cité is the name of the yearly "gay & lesbian" festival in Montreal. Thanks to that I managed to see Nina Hagen in a small club back a few years ago. This time Vive La Fête is playing in a big avenue outside. A stage is here, in the middle of the street where traffic has been closed. VLF is not really my kind of bands, but I have to admit I quite enjoyed those free 70 minutes of Belgium electro music.

Wednesday, 1 August 2007

Whilst - Casa Del Popolo - August 1st 2007

Band : Whilst
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : August 1st 2007
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Whilst is the new musical project of Fluffy & Michel (from l'Oblique). With Fluffy in the band I already had an idea of what to expect musically, and after the french pop of Pas Chic Chic, that was exactly what I needed today. A really nice show indeed.

Pas Chic Chic - Francofolies De Montreal - August 1st 2007

Band : Pas Chic Chic
Venue : Francofolies De Montreal
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : August 1st 2007
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
Intro
Aude Aux Ondes
Tes Clichés Déclenchés
Se Mirer Mare
Blindé D'attentions
Mille Mille
Section Instrumentale
Briser Méprise
Haydée Morcelée
Sur Les Ecrans Statiques
En Chaîne Et En Vogue
Vous Comprenez Pourquoi

Comments : Well, well, well... a tough one to talk about. This is the 2nd time I see Pas Chic Chic at an open-air street festival in a few weeks. I have to admit that the main reason I went to see them the first time is because Roger was a member of Fly Pan Am and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Despite no similarities of his previous musical projects, I found it "entertaining" the first time and rather boring this time. Definitely not my kind of stuff.

And The Saga Continues - Barfly - July 28th 2007

Band : And The Saga Continues
Venue : Barfly
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 28th 2007
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : There is definitely something I like about going to see a show at the Barfly. Our friends from And The Saga Continues gave us a nice show as usual, short and very powerful. I am not a big hardcore expert or fan, but I enjoy seeing them.

Agnostic Front - Foufounes Electriques - July 28th 2007

Band : Agnostic Front
Venue : Foufounes Electriques
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 28th 2007
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I have to admit I do not own any record by Agnostic Front (well, I have the Cremaster video by Mattew Barney but I am not sure that counts...) and do not know (and do not really care) how many of the original members are still in the band at that time (2 I think please correct me if I am wrong). Anyway, seeing this cult band at the Foufs was something I wanted to do, and that was nice. We rushed to the Barfly to see And The Saga Continues to achieve a perfect hardcore evening.

Saturday, 21 July 2007

Gang Green - Foufounes Electriques - July 21th 2007

Band : Gang Green
Venue : Foufounes Electriques
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 21th 2007
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Well, I know nothing about Gang Green, and we went to see the opening band. Anyway, we sticked around for them. That was quite nice and well done, but not really my kind of stuff.

And The Saga Continues - Foufounes Electriques - July 21th 2007

Band : And The Saga Continues
Venue : Foufounes Electriques
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 21th 2007
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : It is really strange how can people can be different in real life and on stage. And The Saga Continues are really quiet and nice people and also a very loud, fast and violent band. A short, nice and very powerful show.

Sunday, 15 July 2007

Thisquietarmy - L'absynthe - July 15th 2007

Band : Thisquietarmy
Venue : L'absynthe
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 15th 2007
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Thisquietarmy is the side-project from the Montreal band Destroyalldreamers. A nice and quiet guitar drone project, and a really nice guy.

Friday, 22 June 2007

Rythm Activism - Sala Rossa - June 22nd 2007

Band : Rythm Activism
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 22nd 2007
Grade : 1/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Sorry, but the same show with the same speech between ths songs (or at least it sounded so) was pretty boring tonight.

Thursday, 21 June 2007

The Ex - Sala Rossa - June 21st 2007

Band : The Ex
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 21st 2007

Shouting At The Moon
Hip Hop
Big A Mirror
Hidgen Fùjnak A Szelek
State Of Shock
Theme From Konomo
Untitled
She Jumped On My Back
Live Wire
Waiting

Prism Song

Comments : First night of the 2 The Ex shows here in Montreal. I stood on the left tonight (and I will be on the right tomorrow, sorry no photos). The Ex are always great live and both nights were a bit different.

Rythm Activism - Sala Rossa - June 21st 2007

Band : Rythm Activism
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 21st 2007
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I really like Norman Nawrocki and I know Rythm Activism had split a while ago, so these shows opening for The Ex were something I wanted to see. Well I have to say, I enjoyed much more his book launch concert at the Casa Del Popolo back a few years ago.

Wednesday, 20 June 2007

Feu Thérèse - Sala Rossa - June 20th 2007

Band : Feu Thérèse
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 20th 2007
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
A Nos Amours
Visage Sous Nylon
Les Déserts Des Azurs
Nada
Ca Va Cogner
Ferrari En Feu (Partie 2)
La Nuit Est Une Femme

Comments : This show is history indeed. This was the first Feu Thérèse show with a saxophone player and therefore the band's last show ever. I leared afterwards that the band has split a few days before. A nice show, even if not the best one I have seen from them. The whole evening was organised by a web radio/TV who ere filming the event and the camera men were quite annoying standing on stage most of the time. Well, I will miss you guys.

David Kristian - Sala Rossa - June 20th 2007

Band : David Kristian
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 20th 2007
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
Part One : Violin Versus Looper
Part Two : Violin Versus Ringmod
Part Three : Inside The String Studio

Comments : David Kristian's shows are something too rare to miss. A short but very good ambient set, sadly suffering from a talkative audience who mostly came to the Sala because it was a free show 5or seemed like).

Saturday, 16 June 2007

Shalabi Effect - Popolo In The Parc - June 16th 2007

Band : Shalabi Effect
Venue : Popolo In The Parc
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 16th 2007
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : It was definitely not easy to find out about that show. We knew that Shalabi Effect were playing on that open air free festival, but no one was really able to tell us when. Anyway, Sam and Anthony, the two original mambers of the band gave us a really good performance that morning.

Friday, 15 June 2007

Hrsta - Sala Rossa - June 15th 2007

Band : Hrsta
Venue : Sala Rossa

Date : June 15th 2007
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
The Orchard
Koror I
21-87
L'éclat Du Ciel Etait Insoutenable
Folkways Orange
Whip

Comments : Replacing The Witchies at the last minute as the opening act for The Evans, that was pretty good news. I really love Hrsta and the show was really nice as usual, featuring new songs from the upcoming album. Not being a big Ian McKaye's fan, I did not stay for The Evans.

Sunday, 10 June 2007

Dinosaur Jr - Higher Grounds - June 10th 2007

Band : Dinosaur Jr

Little Furry Things
Out There
This Is All I Came To Do

Pick Me Up
Crumble
Forget The Swan
Freak Scene
Just Like Heaven
What If I Knew
In A Jar
Mountain Man

Comments : I did not have the chance to see Dinosaur Jr back in the 1990s, and that was actually my first show since their reunion. A pretty nice and extremelty loud show (as expected). J Mascis burned the head of his amp during the show. A nice setlist including The Cure's cover Just Like Heaven.

Lou Barlow - Higher Grounds - June 10th 2007

Band : Lou Barlow
Venue : Higher Grounds
Town (country) : Burlington, VT (USA)
Date : June 10th 2007
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
Skull
Holding Back The Year
Legendary

Comments : Apparently, Lou did not know he was supposed to be the opening band before the night. A nice and intimate set mostly made of Sebadoh songs.

Saturday, 9 June 2007

Maggot Breeder - Soundcentral - June 9th 2007

Band : Maggot Breeder
Venue : Soundcentral
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)

Grade : 4/5

Comments : Release party for Maggot Breeder's first album, but also Reuel's birthday party. A nice and friendly concert, including a live version of Passchendaele.

Wednesday, 6 June 2007

Elizabeth Anka Vajagic - Casa Del Popolo - June 6th 2007

Band : Elizabeth Anka Vajagic
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 6th 2007
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :

Comments : Tonight, I had to chose between this show and Skinny Puppy at the Spectrum. Well, I do not regret my choice at all. A very nice concert with Sam Shalabi as a guest guitar player.

Sunday, 13 May 2007

The Deadfly Ensemble - Casa Del Popolo - May 13th 2007

Band : The Deadfly Ensemble

Date : May 13th 2007
Grade : 3/5

Comments : Farewell Montreal concert for Lucas Lanthier who is moving sohrtly to to New York City. Although, I am not really into his main project Cinema Strange, I quite enjoy The Deadfly Ensemble. A nice show.

Saturday, 5 May 2007

Michael Gira - Sala Rossa - May 5th 2007

Band : Michael Gira
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : May 5th 2007
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : With The Swans being one of the best bands I have seen live, and with Michale Gira being one of my favorite artists for a long time, that was definitely a show I was really excited about. The promoter had the brillian idea to make a double bill with Daniel Johnston that night. Daniel Johnston being the "cool" thing to see at the moment, I almost did not get a ticket and the venue was sold out. After suffering an extremely bad opening act by Brian Seeger, Michael Gira's show was brilliant. Much more powerful than list time I had seen with Akron Family as Angels Of Light. I remember that kid who asked Michael at the end of the show what his name was and Michael answered that his name was Joseph Stalin...

Wednesday, 2 May 2007

Erin Sexton - Sala Rossa - May 2nd 2007

Band : Erin Sexton
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : May 2nd 2007
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Nice set up with a lot of vintage hardware. Although, the result did not really convince me. The piece was based on Steina Vasulka & Homer.
