Comments : I have to admit I really enjoy seeing a band two nights in a row in the same venue. This second night in Chicago had a definitely different atmosphere and a different opening track to start the show. I also find that More News From Nowhere is a great way to end the main set. Another great show although shorter.

The Lyre Of Orpheus
Get Ready For Love
Stagger Lee

Comments : First night in Chicago. A really nice venue with a rather unsubtile security team (the one in Denver gave us cookies as we were waiting in line, while those were chasing the pigeons off the marquee with a chain here). A pretty classic show for this North-American tour and also a pretty good one as expected, although no surprise. The band seemed definitely into it, and tighter than the Denver show.

Wanted Man

Comments : The first evening of the nine Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds shows I will see on this North-American tour. Tonight's show was great, as expected, but shorter than the European sets. No big surprises regarding the actual setlist compared to Europe, but happy to still get Hard On For Love, Papa Won't Leave You Henry and Wanted Man. I have created a dedicated blog for more detailed reviews of this tour :

Nothing Much To Lose
To Here Knows When
Blown A Wish

You Made Me Realise

Comments : My Bloody Valentine curated the last day of the festival and headlined it. Well, this proves that being considered as a "cult" band does not make it all. I enjoyed the show and I am glad i finally got to see them, but found the band live way over rated. The 20 minutes or so of noise during You Made Me Realise was just plain.

Dinosaur Jr - ATP New York - September 21st 2008

Comments : After such a great set by Mogwai, I still enjoyed to see Dinosaur Jr, although I preferred last year's show in Vermont.

Mogwai - ATP New York - September 21st 2008

Band : Mogwai
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 21st 2008

Comments : Another great show by Mogwai, including songs from "The Hawk Is Hawling" to be released next week. Martin Bulloch was taken to the hospital after this show because of a problem with his pacemaker. The remaining North-American dates have been cancelled (damn, I was supposed to see them again in Montreal on Tuesday). Anyway, I wish Martin the best.

Mercury Rev - ATP New York - September 21st 2008

Band : Mercury Rev

Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
Snowflake In A Hot World
October Sunshine
Holes
Funny Bird
You're My Queen
People Are So Unpredictable
The Dark Is Rising

Comments : I discovered Mercury Rev when they opened for Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds in 2004 and really enjoyed them there. Tonight's set was nice and I look forward to see them again in Montreal by the end of the year.

Robin Guthrie - ATP New York - September 21st 2008

Band : Robin Guthrie
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 21st 2008
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : This is the first time I saw Robin Guthrie on stage since the Cocteau Twins concert in Lyon in 1994, and this was definitely something I was looking forward to see. A nice and etheral set, reminiscent of an instrumental incarnation of his previous work. Very enjoyable to start the day.

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra - ATP New York - September 20th 2008

Band : Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)

Setlist :
13 Blues for Thirteen Moons
God Bless Our Dead Marines
Take These Hands And Throw Them In The River
Black Waters Blowed/Engine Broke Blues
1,000,000 Died To Make This Sound
There Is A Light

Comments : A great show, despite a quite "light" version of the band on stage. Efrim seemed to be in a great mood, interacting and joking a lot with the audience, introducing the band as The Leaves Of Grass from California.

Extra : God Bless Our Dead Marines - part 2 (video)

Low - ATP New York - September 20th 2008

Band : Low
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)

Pretty People
?
?
Tonight
Walk Into The Sea
Breaker
Canada
Little Argument With Myself
Hatchet
Santa's Coming Over
Shots And Ladders

Comments : Although I only had the chance to see Low once before tonight, they are definitely one of my most favorite bands and one of the shows that really made me come to ATP this year. A great set, very intense, oh well, I love this band.

Extra : Murderer (video)

Harmonia - ATP New York - September 20th 2008

Band : Harmonia
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 20th 2008
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : A rare performance by the 1973 German krautrock band including Michael Rother of Neu!, reformed in 2007. I really liked the beginning of their set, but lost a bit of interest when they added more actual "beat" sounds later. Still good to see.

The Drones - ATP New York - September 20th 2008

Band : The Drones
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 20th 2008
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : After their quite nice performance in Montreal last November, I had high expectations on this show. Sadly, I found today's performance good, but not as exciting as I expected.

Thurston Moore - ATP New York - September 19th 2008

Band : Thurston Moore
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 19th 2008
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :

Pretty Bad
Patti Smith Match Scratch
Blues From Beyond The Grave
See-Through Playmate
Tranquilizer
Feathers
Hang Out
Cherry's Blues
Cindy (Rotten Tank)
Female Cop
Staring Statues
Psychic Hearts

Comments : Last but not least show for tonight, Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore was performing his 1995 solo album "Psychic Hearts", joined by Steve Shelly who also played on the album. Unlike Tortoise, Thurston's set sounded unrehearsed and yet extremely good. The songs were not played in the right order and Thurston came back on stage for one encore to play the song "Psychic Heart".

Tortoise - ATP New York - September 19th 2008

Band : Tortoise
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 19th 2008
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
Djed
Glass Museum
A Survey
The Taut And Tame
Dear Grandma And Grandpa
Along The Banks Of Rivers
Coffin
Monica
In Sarah, Mencken, Christ and Beethoven There Were Women And Men
Crest

Comments : Tonight was also the second time I saw Tortoise and was also a special concert as they performed their 1996 album "Millions Now Living Will Never Die". Although I really like Tortoise and this album, I have to admit I was a bit disappointed by this set. A nice set, but the songs sounded to me too sharp and maybe too rehearsed.

Bardo Pond - ATP New York - September 19th 2008

Band : Bardo Pond
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 19th 2008
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Tommy Gun Angel
Pick My Brain
Flux
Anandamide
Green Man
Straw Dog
Aldrin

Comments : The first time I saw Bardo Pond, they were opening for Godspeed You! Black Emperor in New Orleans and I was pretty happy to see them again at ATP. This time, they played their 1997 album "Lapsed". A really nice show to start the festival in a really nice venue.

?
A Minute
Squirrel Song
Mama Gina
Instrumental
Untitled
Untitled
Prayer To God
Killers (fast Version)
Untitled
End Of Radio
Killers
Untitled
Crow
Spoke

Comments : To be honest I was much more excited to see A Place To Burry Strangers than Shellac, but tonight was probably one of my very few opportunities to see Steve Albini live. However, I did not get into it at all and found this show quite boring. Sorry.

A Place To Bury Strangers - Sala Rosa - September 17th 2008

Band : A Place To Bury Strangers
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 17th 2008
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : An amazing show. It has been over a year now I have been waiting to see this great band from Brooklyn and I have not been disappointed at all. Great use of space, light, projections, strobe and smoke... great stage presence and great music. These guys have it all and give it all. Thank you.

Motörhead - Metropolis - September 16th 2008

Band : Motörhead
Venue : Metropolis
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 16th 2008
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Even if I am not a big metal fan, Motörhead was a band I really wanted to see. The Misfits (or what's left of them) were supposed to open for tonight's show but they cancelled the whole tour, therefore I managed to miss the 3 opening bands. The show was pretty good although not "louder than anything else". Lemmy has a great voice and is very charismatic though quite static on stage.

Sunday, 14 September 2008

Thisquietarmy - Le Petit Campus - September 14th 2008

Band : Thisquietarmy
Venue : Le Petit Campus
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 14th 2008
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
Mercenary Flags
Empire
? (Improvisation)
Battlefield Arkestrah
Warchitects

Comments : Another good show by one of my favorites local acts. Very few changes in the setlist since last time I saw Eric and a few technical problems soundwise at the beginning, but still very enjoyable as usual.

Extra : video

Maggot Breeder - Le Petit Campus - September 14th 2008

Band : Maggot Breeder
Venue : Le Petit Campus
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 14th 2008
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : First Maggot Breeder show in over a year. Tonight's show was really different from the album and definitely the most violent one of the evening, the 10 minutes set being more on the noise side than ambient. Very enjoyable.

Extra : video

Thierry Gauthier - Le Petit Campus - September 14th 2008

Band : Thierry Gauthier
Venue : Le Petit Campus
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 14th 2008
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Electronic glitches on a guitar played with an EBow. A quiet show to start the evening, maybe too quiet though. Unlike last night's video, I found tonight's visuals pretty useless, not to say boring. An interesting performance anyways, but something was definitely missing.

Saturday, 13 September 2008

Whilst - Le Cagibi - September 13th 2008

Band : Whilst
Venue : Le Cagibi
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 13th 2008
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Last of the 4 bands playing tonight at le Cagibi, Whilst started with a rather odd set up, as Fluffy and Michel are seated in front of the screen, showing their back to the audience. As usual, the duo is using all kinds of odd objects and sources to create a great ambient atmosphere (no computer processing here). Unsurprisingly, a great video edited by Fluffy (yes, he was the guy responsible for the projections during the Godspeed shows). A really nice show to end the evening.

Cloudscapes - Le Cagibi - September 13th 2008

Band : Cloudscapes
Venue : Le Cagibi
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 13th 2008
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Etienne's live shows are quite rare and definitely something I was looking forward to see. The guy is building his own effect pedals himself and brought a whole bunch of them. A very quiet ambient set, maybe insecure at times, but still great to see.

The Walkmen - Sala Rossa - September 9th 2008

Band : The Walkmen
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 9th 2008
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : A nice show as expected with 2 guest brass players. The Sala was pretty crowded, no surprise. However, I was a bit disappointed compared to the show I saw last year when they opened for Kaiser Chiefs at le Spectrum.
