The Sisters Of Mercy - Club Soda - October 29th 2008

Band : The Sisters Of Mercy
Venue : Club Soda
City (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 29th 2008
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
Crash & Burn
Ribbons

Will I Dream ?
Marian
Alice
Anaconda
Giving Ground

Still
First & Last & Always

Something Fast
Vision Thing

Lucretia My reflection
Top Nite Out
Temple Of Love

Comments : A very good show, as expected (tonight being my 17th Sisters Of Mercy show), but no big surprise; although it is pretty nice to hear Marian again. This tour is definitely starting way much better than the previous one (good sound, less smoke...).The original setlist included Romeo Down and Flood II but the main set stopped after First & Last & Always. You can also read my full review of the show (longer, but in French) coming up shortly here : http://thesistersofmercy.free.fr/

The Tiger Lillies - Usine C - October 28th 2008

Band : The Tiger Lillies
Venue : Usine C
City (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 28th 2008
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : The Tiger Lillies are back in Montreal after last year's show cancelled due to a snow storm. Another really great show of black humor and sick twisted, including great hit songs at the end such as Kick A Baby or Hamster. And most of all a snow storm to come back home after the show (yes, really, and today is October 28th).

The Legendary Pink Dots - Les Saints - October 27th 2008

Band : The Legendary Pink Dots
Venue : Les Saints
City (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 27th 2008
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

Comments : A nice concert, despite a certain lack of intensity at the beginning. In the second part, the show improved a lot, although not the best Pink Dots concert I have seen. A great ending with two encores including Fifteen Flies In The Marmelade.

City (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 23rd 2008
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
They Have Found Us

Comments : Announced as the last Thisquietarmy concert of this year and also the release party of his new album "Blackhaunter", tonight's show was very nice indeed. Including new songs, some yet to be released. See you again next year Eric.

Band : Whilst
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
City (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 23rd 2008

Comments : Unlike their last show at le Cagibi, Whilst did not use any video projection tonight and played on a very dark stage. A nice performance as usual, more minimalist and noise oriented.

Karl Lemieux / Jonathan Parant / David Bryant / Kevin Doria - L'envers - October 20th 2008

Band : Karl Lemieux / Jonathan Parant / David Bryant / Kevin Doria
Venue : L'envers
City (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 20th 2008
Grade : 3/5
Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Another improvised live soundtrack to Karl Lemieux's 16mm films manipulations. A nice line up for a nice performance with really great moments, although I felt a loss of intensity towards the end (maybe 55 minutes was a bit too long ?), but still very interesting.

Hi My Quiet Tsar - Le Cagibi - October 18th 2008

Band : Hi My Quiet Tsar
Venue : Le Cagibi
City (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 18th 2008
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : New side-project from Eric (Thisquietarmy) without any guitar involved. I think tonight was his second show ever with this set up (please Eric, I know you read this blog, so correct me if I'm wrong). The result was definitely different from his usual project as expected, but still reminiscent of some ambiances and atmospheres you can find in Thisquietarmy. A pretty nice, intimate and short set (perfect timing actually).

Band : Okkervil River
Venue : Les Saints
City (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 11th 2008
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Although I was not very familiar with Okkervil River as I only knew a couple of their songs before the show, and despite Les Saints is not my favorite venue to see a show, I enjoyed this concert. A great energy on stage, during over 1 hour and a half.

Comments : Last show of the North-American tour and one of the few not sold out. Unlike the Olympia (Paris) show which ended the European tour in June, tonight had nothing special, but still a pretty good concert. I have to admit I feel a bit sad to go home now, after 9 shows in 11 days, travelling more than 8000km...

Kid Congo Powers & The Pink Monkey Birds - Electric Factory - October 7th 2008

More News From Nowhere

Your Funeral My Trial
Jesus Of The Moon
Get Ready For Love
Stagger Lee

Comments : I had the same feeling as in Chicago. Both nights were really different. Tonight's set was much less tight than the first DC show, but I really enjoyed this concert a lot. It was also great to have Your Funeral My Trial during the encore.

Kid Congo Powers & The Pink Monkey Birds - 9:30 Club - October 6th 2008

Band : Kid Congo Powers & The Pink Monkey Birds
Venue : 9:30 Club
City (country) : Washington, DC (USA)
Date : October 6th 2008
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Pumpkin Pie
Sex Beat
Hitchhiking
Black Santa
Funky Fly
La Historia De Un Amour
La Llarona
Rare As The Yeti
LSDC
Love Of Ivy
Kris Kringle Ju Ju

Comments : My previous experience with Kid Congo Powers opening for Nick Cave was at the Beacon Theatre in NYC in 2002, and I have to admit that the Kid Congo Powers & Khan set did not fully convince me back then. However, I really enjoyed this new collaboration with The Pink Monkey Birds, reminiscent of Kid's past with Gun Club or The Cramps. The cover of Gun Club's Sex Beat was a bonus to a really great set. I am really happy to see them again tomorrow in Philadelphia.

Comments : Back to a much smaller venue and back for two nights in a row; what more to ask? Tonight was another pretty good show with a pretty good atmosphere in the audience.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - WaMu Theatre At Madison Square Garden - October 4th 2008

Band : Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Venue : WaMu Theatre At Madison Square Garden
City (country) : New York City, NY (USA)
Date : October 4th 2008
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
Hold On To Yourself

Tupelo

Moonland
The Mercy Seat

Hard On For Love
We Call Upon The Author
Papa Won't Leave You Henry

The Lyre Of Orpheus
Get Ready For Love
Stagger Lee

Comments : I have to say I was a bit disappointed to see the New York City show scheduled in this big (yet mythical) venue instead of two night in a smaller theatre (like the Beacon in 2002). Another pretty good show with a rather similar setlist as Montreal, although I noticed a little loss of intensity towards the end.

Wanted Man
We Call Upon The Author

Comments : Last night in Toronto was just average (sorry no photos), but this one probably deserves a 6 out of 5. Undoubtly the best show of the North-American tour I have seen, and the only one where they came for a second encore. There was a great atmosphere in the audience and the crowd would just not leave the venue after the lights and the back music went back. Tonight was my 40th Nick Cave show over the last 14 years and Nick gently nursed me through Papa Won't Leave You Henry. The opening act on the other side was probably one of the worst band I ever saw live.
