Message To Bears - Jamboree - December 14th 2009

Band : Message To Bears
Venue : Jamboree
Town (country) : London (UK)
Date : December 14th 2009
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I was expecting a solo performance and a full band showed up on stage. A more "serious" set to end the evening (the Wonder Woman videos were not such a great idea here), and the band actually made the songs much more interesting than what I had heard on the myspace. Nice, quiet and trippy.

Panic Attract - Jamboree - December 14th 2009

Band : Panic Attract
Venue : Jamboree
Town (country) : London (UK)
Date : December 14th 2009
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Not my usual kind of music, still a rather nice show in a great venue. The two members were obviously having fun on stage. The old Wonder Woman videos projected nicely complemented the atmosphere of the concert, though I don't think it was quite what the band intended.

Emboe - Le Pixi - December 11th 2009

Band : Emboe
Venue : Le Pixi
Town (country) : Paris (France)
Date : December 11th 2009
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : The very first live show for Emboe was somewhat interesting musically. A video screening and/or seats in the venue would have been a welcomed addition.

Alexander Hacke & Danielle De Picciotto - Sala Rossa - December 5th 2009

Band : Alexander Hacke & Danielle De Picciotto
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : December 5th 2009
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : And now for something completely different. The second evening, Alexander Hacke and his wife Danielle De Picciotto, presented a show entitled "History Of Electricity". Another really nice performance, even if I was less convinced by the more beat-oriented songs.

Alexander Hacke & Danielle De Picciotto - Sala Rossa - December 4th 2009

Band : Alexander Hacke & Danielle De Picciotto
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : December 4th 2009
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
The Thing Of Desire
Rye Whiskey
Hey God
Violent March
The Grind
Prayer
The Golden Calf
Lullaby
Blacklist
Quiet Village

Comments : Alexander Hacke is the third member of Einstürzende Neubauten that I get to see performing solo (after Blixa Bargeld and FM Einheit). I did not really know what to expect, as I have only ever heard his 1993 solo album Filmarbeiten. Tonight's show "The Ship Of Fools" takes us on a voyage far away from that album and from the Neubauten nebula. A great mise en scène, somewhere between Tiger Lillies and The Residents, and a really great concert. See you tomorrow.

Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Make
Rock
Auberge Le Mouton Noir
The Apartment Song
Bruce E Kinesis
Reitschule
Frederica
The Universe !

Comments : Maybe a bit less exciting last night, but still a pretty good concert, with a slightly different setlist but the same kind of crowd, including a guy who spent the whole show headbanging right in front of the stage...

Do Make Say Think - Sala Rossa - November 25th 2009

Band : Do Make Say Think
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 25th 2009
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
Executioner Blues
Say
The Apartment Song
Think
Reitschule
Frederica
Bound To Be That Way
Horns Of A Rabbit
The Universe !
Do
Auberge Le Mouton Noir

Comments : I was not really convinced by the two side projects as opening acts, but Do Make Say Think played their best show I have seen so far. Two nights in a row in a smaller venue are definitely way better than one single concert at Le National. A great performance, a nice setlist, and a good ambience despite the rather young and drunken crowd.

Lionel Marchetti / Yôko Higashi - Conservatoire De Musique De Montréal - November 22th 2009

Venue : Conservatoire De Musique De Montréal (Akousma)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 22th 2009
Grade : 4/5

Comments : A really great show, and totally different than Yoko's solo show at Le Cagibi two days ago. The buto performance went extremely well with the noise music. Fascinating.

hamaYôko - Le Cagibi - November 17th 2009

Band : hamaYôko
Venue : Le Cagibi
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 17th 2009
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

Comments : The cosy atmosphere of Le Cagibi made it the perfect set up for tonight's concert; and this time, I knew what to expect. A really nice show that should definitely have deserved a bigger turnout.

Klaxon Gueule - L'envers - November 14th 2009

Band : Klaxon Gueule
Venue : L'envers
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 14th 2009
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : You know that I always complain about shows that start later than they are supposed to. Well, guess what is worse ? A show that starts earlier. After Eric's set at Casa Del Popolo, I walked to L'envers to see Klaxon Gueule. Gladly enough I showed up earlier than expected and I missed only 1/3 of the show. Last time I saw Klaxon Gueule was in a coal mine museum back... 6 years ago, and this is a show I was really looking forward to. Tonight, the trio accompagned by 2 guests (Philippe Lauzier & Gordon Allen) played a very different set than my previous experience, leaving the electronic experimentations for a more jazz sound.

Thisquietarmy - Casa Del Popolo - November 14th 2009

Band : Thisquietarmy
Venue : Casa Del Poplo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 14th 2009
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I managed to miss every single Thisquietarmy show in Montreal since Eric returned from his first European tour this Summer. Slowly recovering from the flu, (I did not say H1N1), I am glad I made it tonight. A rather different set than usual including tracks I had never heared before. According to Eric's blog, tonight was his last Montreal set for 2009. Damn ! (Eric, if you have the setlist of your show, please send it to me).

Kimika - Le Milieu - November 5th 2009

Band : Kimika
Venue : Le Milieu
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 5th 2009
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I had never heard about Kimika before tonight, so I had no idea of what to expect. Tonight's concert turned out to be a pretty good post-rock one. Maybe not very original, but I found their long tracks more interesting than those of other recent post-rock bands I have seen.

Black Heart Procession - Sala Rossa - November 4th 2009

Band : Black Heart Procession
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 4th 2009
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
All My Steps
Release My Heart
Rats
Wasteland
Square Heart
Drugs
Witching Stone
Tropics Of Love
Not Just Words
Blue Tears
Heaven And Hell
Tangled
Outside The Glass
Suicide
Your Church Is Red

Comments : This is another show I was waiting for. Tonight's concert was good, but started way too late and the setlist was much less interesting than last time I saw them 3 years ago. Some great moments, but I missed tracks from "3".

Mongst - Industrial Loft Project - November 3rd 2009

Band : Mongst
Venue : Industrial Loft Project
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 3rd 2009
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Another really good noise/drone solo performance, this time by the drummer of Shearing Pinx. Dark and ambient at the same time.

Les Beyond - Industrial Loft Project - November 3rd 2009

Band : Les Beyond
Venue : Industrial Loft Project
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 3rd 2009
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Another solo show (well, this was actually a night of solo projects), this time by Shearing Pinx' guitar player. A great guitar/loop set, very distant from her other band, very ambient, almost shoegaze.

Anju Singh - Industrial Loft Project - November 3rd 2009

Band : Anju Singh
Venue : Industrial Loft Project
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 3rd 2009
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : An amazing solo violin performance by Anju from the band Ahna to start the evening. I really loved her loops and drones.

Shearing Pinx - Casa Del Popolo - November 2nd 2009

Band : Shearing Pinx
Venue : Casa Del Poplo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 2nd 2009
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

Comments : Not my usual stuff, but great to see Shearing Pinx. I really enjoyed their set, very various and vivid.

Ahna - Casa Del Popolo - November 2nd 2009

Band : Ahna
Venue : Casa Del Poplo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 2nd 2009
Grade : 3/5

Comments : A very nice and very loud show by this great bass/drums duo. A short and efficient set, both subtile and heavy at the same time.

Deadbeat
Exploding Head
Everything Always Goes Wrong
To Fix The Gash
I Know I'll See You
Keep Slipping Away
Smile When You Smile

Comments : Last year's show was one of my highlights of 2008 so I had extremely high expectations. Tonight's show was, well, good... just good.

Sunday, 25 October 2009

Herman Dune - Ukrainian Federation - October 25th 2009

Band : Herman Dune
Venue : Ukrainian Federation
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 25th 2009
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : The Herman Dune concert started with David Herman Dune playing a couple of songs solo on the guitar. I instantly started to get bored. Happily, the drummer joined in for the third song, which made the show more intresting... Having seen Herman Düne before (note the loss of the umlaut when the band became a duo), tonight's show was definitely disappointing, except for the two songs where Julie joined them on stage.

Julie Doiron - Ukrainian Federation - October 25th 2009

Band : Julie Doiron
Venue : Ukrainian Federation
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 25th 2009
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : A really good solo set by Julie Doiron. I did not feel the recent departure of her drummer was a big loss. It actually made tonight's concert more intimate and therefore more touching.

Alexandre St-Onge - Casa Del Poplo - October 21st 2009

Band : Alexandre St-Onge
Venue : Casa Del Poplo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 21st 2009
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : It has been way too long since I last saw Alexandre in concert. Each performance is truly unique, ever pushing the barriers of experimentation. Tonight's set was one piece divided in three parts (or should I say "movements"?); very enjoyable, although very short.

The Vomit Arsonist - Le Cagibi - October 17th 2009

Band : The Vomit Arsonist
Venue : Le Cagibi
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 17th 2009
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : A really powerful set to finish the evening. The Vomit Arsonist succeds where many others fail and hide their lack of creativity behind layers of distortion. A great noise / power electronics act.

Band : Pine Tree State Mind Control
Venue : Le Cagibi
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 17th 2009

Cloudscapes - Le Cagibi - October 17th 2009

Band : Cloudscapes
Venue : Le Cagibi
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 17th 2009
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

Comments : Back to something more "conventional" for Cloudscapes, and I will definitely not complain about it. A really nice ambient set to start the evening.

George A. Romero - Cinéma Imperial - October 10th 2009

Band : Georges A. Romero
Venue : Cinéma Imperial (Festival Du Nouveau Cinéma)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 10th 2009
Grade : n/a

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Who could have introduced the new …Of The Dead movie than George A Romero himself ? Survival Of The Dead might not be the most memorable movie of the serie, but it was an amazing evening. Before the movie, George A Romero gave us an introduction on the movie followed by a Q&A with the audience. We also managed to share a few words with him in private and he was really nice and accessible.

Wovenhand - Sala Rossa - October 4th 2009

Band : Wovenhand
Venue : Sala Rossa (Pop Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 4th 2009
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : A nice show to end the festival, even if I was not extremely motivated to see any other band after last night's fantastic concert (Diamanda Galàs). Quite similar to the 16 Horsepower shows I have seen and featuring a great encore with a cover of Joy Division's "Heart & Soul".

Saturday, 3 October 2009

Diamanda Galàs - Théâtre Outremont - October 3rd 2009

Band : Diamanda Galàs
Venue : Théâtre Outremont (Pop Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 3rd 2009
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : An amazing show, even if I found "Concert For Piano & Voice" less coherent than "Defixiones, Will And Testament" back 6 years ago. I was unable to take my eyes off her during the hour and a half performance. No need to over-analyze, it was 90 minutes of pure emotion. Undoubtedly THE concert of the year.

Jerusalem In My Heart - Théâtre Outremont - October 3rd 2009

Band : Jerusalem In My Heart
Venue : Théâtre Outremont (Pop Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 3rd 2009
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I was relieved to hear that the opening act for Diamanda Galàs was going to be Jerusalem In My Heart. Tonight's show was totally different than their last. The very short performance ran under 20 minutes. It featured about 30 men on stage, in a setting reminiscent of a ballet, while footage of a beheading was projected behind them. The band had given out blindfolds to the women in the audience and requested that they'd wear them during the performance. However, they neglected to explain why.

Teenage Jesus & The Jerks - Le National - October 2nd 2009

Band : Teenage Jesus & The Jerks
Venue : Le National (Pop Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 2nd 2009
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Red Alert
Less Of Me
The Closet
Crown Of Thorns
Burning Rubber
Eliminate By Night
Freud In Flop
I Woke Up Dreaming
Race Mixing
Baby Doll
Orphans

Comments : Probably one of the best Lydia Lunch concerts I have ever seen, and definitely the shortest one. The band's great line-up featured Jim Sclavunos (Bad Seeds, Grinderman) on drums and Algis Kizys (Swans) on bass. They played right under 25 minutes, playing several songs 2 or 3 times in a row. I had chosen not to see them at the infamous Nuits Sonores festival in Lyon due to the prohibitive ticket price, so I am really happy I got to see them this time.
