Comments : Last year's show was one of my highlights of 2008 so I had extremely high expectations. Tonight's show was, well, good... just good.

Herman Dune - Ukrainian Federation - October 25th 2009

Band : Herman Dune
Venue : Ukrainian Federation
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 25th 2009
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : The Herman Dune concert started with David Herman Dune playing a couple of songs solo on the guitar. I instantly started to get bored. Happily, the drummer joined in for the third song, which made the show more intresting... Having seen Herman Düne before (note the loss of the umlaut when the band became a duo), tonight's show was definitely disappointing, except for the two songs where Julie joined them on stage.

Julie Doiron - Ukrainian Federation - October 25th 2009

Band : Julie Doiron
Venue : Ukrainian Federation
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 25th 2009
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : A really good solo set by Julie Doiron. I did not feel the recent departure of her drummer was a big loss. It actually made tonight's concert more intimate and therefore more touching.

Alexandre St-Onge - Casa Del Poplo - October 21st 2009

Band : Alexandre St-Onge
Venue : Casa Del Poplo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 21st 2009
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : It has been way too long since I last saw Alexandre in concert. Each performance is truly unique, ever pushing the barriers of experimentation. Tonight's set was one piece divided in three parts (or should I say "movements"?); very enjoyable, although very short.

The Vomit Arsonist - Le Cagibi - October 17th 2009

Band : The Vomit Arsonist
Venue : Le Cagibi
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 17th 2009
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

Comments : A really powerful set to finish the evening. The Vomit Arsonist succeds where many others fail and hide their lack of creativity behind layers of distortion. A great noise / power electronics act.

Band : Cloudscapes
Venue : Le Cagibi
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 17th 2009

Comments : Back to something more "conventional" for Cloudscapes, and I will definitely not complain about it. A really nice ambient set to start the evening.

George A. Romero - Cinéma Imperial - October 10th 2009

Band : Georges A. Romero
Venue : Cinéma Imperial (Festival Du Nouveau Cinéma)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 10th 2009
Grade : n/a

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Who could have introduced the new …Of The Dead movie than George A Romero himself ? Survival Of The Dead might not be the most memorable movie of the serie, but it was an amazing evening. Before the movie, George A Romero gave us an introduction on the movie followed by a Q&A with the audience. We also managed to share a few words with him in private and he was really nice and accessible.

Wovenhand - Sala Rossa - October 4th 2009

Band : Wovenhand
Venue : Sala Rossa (Pop Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 4th 2009
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : A nice show to end the festival, even if I was not extremely motivated to see any other band after last night's fantastic concert (Diamanda Galàs). Quite similar to the 16 Horsepower shows I have seen and featuring a great encore with a cover of Joy Division's "Heart & Soul".

Diamanda Galàs - Théâtre Outremont - October 3rd 2009

Band : Diamanda Galàs
Venue : Théâtre Outremont (Pop Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 3rd 2009
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : An amazing show, even if I found "Concert For Piano & Voice" less coherent than "Defixiones, Will And Testament" back 6 years ago. I was unable to take my eyes off her during the hour and a half performance. No need to over-analyze, it was 90 minutes of pure emotion. Undoubtedly THE concert of the year.

Jerusalem In My Heart - Théâtre Outremont - October 3rd 2009

Band : Jerusalem In My Heart
Venue : Théâtre Outremont (Pop Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 3rd 2009
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I was relieved to hear that the opening act for Diamanda Galàs was going to be Jerusalem In My Heart. Tonight's show was totally different than their last. The very short performance ran under 20 minutes. It featured about 30 men on stage, in a setting reminiscent of a ballet, while footage of a beheading was projected behind them. The band had given out blindfolds to the women in the audience and requested that they'd wear them during the performance. However, they neglected to explain why.

Teenage Jesus & The Jerks - Le National - October 2nd 2009

Band : Teenage Jesus & The Jerks
Venue : Le National (Pop Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 2nd 2009
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Red Alert
Less Of Me
The Closet
Crown Of Thorns
Burning Rubber
Eliminate By Night
Freud In Flop
I Woke Up Dreaming
Race Mixing
Baby Doll
Orphans

Comments : Probably one of the best Lydia Lunch concerts I have ever seen, and definitely the shortest one. The band's great line-up featured Jim Sclavunos (Bad Seeds, Grinderman) on drums and Algis Kizys (Swans) on bass. They played right under 25 minutes, playing several songs 2 or 3 times in a row. I had chosen not to see them at the infamous Nuits Sonores festival in Lyon due to the prohibitive ticket price, so I am really happy I got to see them this time.

Mono - La Tulipe - October 1st 2009

Band : Mono
Venue : La Tulipe (Pop Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 1st 2009
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Last time Mono played in Montreal (at Les Saints), I had blamed my poor concert experience on the audience of the band they were opening for. Sadly, tonight's audience was the same. To illustrate this : the kid who sat behind me spent a third of the show playing air guitar and air drums, a third hitting me with his long hair while head banging and the last third... texting messages from his cell. A longer show than this summer's, maybe too long, and therefore did not reach the intensity of last time.

Diamada Galàs - Concordia University - October 1st 2009

Band : Diamanda Galàs
Venue : Concordia University
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 1st 2009
Grade : n/a

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : A lecture given by Diamanda Galàs as part of the HIV/AIDS lectures series at the Concordia University. The speech entitled "Prayers For The Infidel" allowed us to glimpse the more human side of Diamanda Galàs. An extremely nice and touching artist, almost shy at the beginning. Her speech got more and more intense towards the end as expected. Unforgettable.
