Raymonde Howard - Salle Des Fêtes - December 19th 2010

Band : Raymonde Howard
Venue : Salle Des Fêtes
Town (country) : Luriecq (France)
Date : December 19th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : The band and I almost didn't make it due to snow storms (you know that France cannot deal with snow...), but I am glad we did. The atmosphere was very different than last week's, a warmer audience maybe due to the countryside location? Another nice show, quite similar to last week's in terms of setlist, but with one extra unplanned encore.

Raymonde Howard - Kraspek Myzik - December 12th 2010

Band : Raymonde Howard
Venue : Kraspek Myzik
Town (country) : Lyon (France)
Date : December 12th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
The Naked Line
Lychee Liquor
The Raincoats Are Here
Who's Got The Girls
The Sculptress
Between The Lines
Les Visteurs
Alex & The Ramps
Fuck You

Comments : I never thought I would see another show at my old headquarters, having been shut down by the city of Lyon 8 years ago. It was nice to see Laetitia and Fabrice after their Montreal show despite my jetlag. No big surprises in the setlist with only 1 old song played ("Between The Lines"), and a brand new track called "Les Visiteurs" (I have no clue if this is related to the famous French movie of the same name).

Killing Joke - Cabaret Juste Pour Rire - December 5th 2010

Band : Killing Joke
Venue : Cabaret Juste Pour Rire
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 5th 2010
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Tomorrow's World
Change
Wardance
Absolute Dissent
Bloodsport
European Super State
This World Hell
Fall Of Because
Ghosts Of Ladbroke Grove
Requiem
Madness
The Great Cull
Asteroid
The Wait
Pssyche
Primitive
Eighties
Pandemonium

Comments : Rescheduled from the Spring, I got a bit scared of another cancellation when it started to snow quite heavily today. Great to see a full band reunion at last after a terrible show in Lyon in 2006. A very cool atmosphere on stage, the band often straying from the actual setlist. The songs from the new album did not particularily appeal to me but the old ones were truly fantastic. I was only disappointed not to hear Love Like Blood tonight after seeing that it had been played on this tour. Not as memorable as the 2003 tour, but a really great show anyways.

Band : Les Beyond
Venue : Le Cagibi
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 26th 2010

Comments : The longest Les Beyond show I have even seen. Erin played for almost 50 minutes tonight, but managed to keep the intensity. A very nice one.

Hangedup - Casa Del Popolo - November 22nd 2010

Band : Hangedup
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 22nd 2010
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Kinetic Work
Junk The Clatter
A Different Kind Of Function
Alarm
Klang Klang
Losing Your Charm
No More Bad Future
New Blue Monday

Comments : One of my favorite Constellation projects ! This was a warm-up show for for their show at ATP UK curated by Godspeed, their first in 7 years. A very nice turnout tonight and a very nice show, including their amazing cover of "Blue Monday", not requested by me for once. I really hope this evening will make them want to play again together in the future.

Radwan Ghazi Moumneh - Casa Del Popolo - November 22nd 2010

Band : Radwan Ghazi Moumneh
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 22nd 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

Comments : A very short set as usual, this time solo, but still pretty
efficient and straight to the point. Very enjoyable as usual.

Grinderman - Metropolis - November 12th 2010

Band : Grinderman
Venue : Metropolis
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 12th 2010
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
Mickey Mouse And The Goodbye Man
Worm Tamer
Get It On
Heathen Child
Evil !
When My Baby Comes
What I Know
Honey Bee (Let's Fly To Mars)
Kitchenette
No Pussy Blues
Bellringer Blues
Palaces Of Montezuma
When My Love Comes Down
Love Bomb
Grinderman
Man In The Moon

Comments : Probably the most hyped show of the fall. The show where everyone had to be. We still managed to secure our usual front row spots. I have to confess the second Grinderman album did not have as much impact on me as the first one, but Nick Cave is still Nick Cave so I can not be 100% partial about this one. A very nice show as expected, although definitely less exciting than a Bad Seeds one.

Armen Ra - Metropolis - November 12th 2010

Band : Armen Ra
Venue : Metropolis
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 12th 2010
Grade : 1/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I should probably have skipped writing anything about this show and let it slip away from my memory, but tonight I feel like I have to write something about it. A solo theremin set opening for Grinderman ? Well, that could have been interesting if it had lasted half of the actual set time and if the performer did not have the great idea of using pre-recorded music to play to (think 80's keyboard muzak). The setlist included great hits like Ave Maria, but the cherry on the cake was the theme from the Godfather, the very next day after the actual godfather of the Montreal mob Nicolo Rizutto got shot...

The Black Angels - La Tulipe - November 1st 2010

Band : The Black Angels
Venue : La Tulipe
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 1st 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
You On The Run
Bloodhounds On My Trail
Bad Vibrations
Entrance Song
Mission District
Yellow Elevator #2
Black Grease
Science Killer
The First Vietnamese War
The Sniper
Haunting At 1300 McKinley
Better Off ALone
Phosphene Dream
Telephone
?
Empire
Young Men Dead

Comments : Tonight's show confirmed my previous impressions from ATP. As much as I like their albums, The Black Angels are definitely not the greatest band on stage. Nothing bad per se, but nothing memorable either. The guest sitar player on the last 3 songs added something nice to the show but it was not enough to save the show for me.

Band : Hrsta
Venue : Divan Orange
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 27th 2010
Grade : 4/5

Comments : Great to see Hrsta playing once more before the Godspeed reunion. A short set as a duo with only Mike and Lisa Gamble. Very different than the last time, but still really great as expected.

Raymonde Howard - Casa Del Popolo - October 25th 2010

Band : Raymonde Howard
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 25th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Very first North-American show for my friend Laetitia, with her drummer Fabrice who is now a permanent member of the band. Nice to see them in a different environment, although the Casa sounded very "Stéphanoise" tonight. Lots of new songs since last time I saw her/them, mostly from the second album "For All The Bruises Black Eyes And Peas".

Chat Ours - Casa Del Popolo - October 25th 2010

Band : Chat Ours
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 25th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I did not know much about Chat Ours before tonight, except that one of the members (David) also plays in La Seconda Volta. The duo played an electro kitsch set, dedicating one song to Claude François and finishing their set with a cover of Lio's Banana Split. Not to be taken seriously, but a very fresh start to the evening.

Black Heart Procession - Cabaret Du Mile End - October 23rd 2010

Band : Black Heart Procession
Venue : Cabaret Du Mile End
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 23rd 2010
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I had missed the Black Heart Procession last year in France due to highway closures because of heavy snow. Tonight, the band played a very intimate set, as a duo. As they were opening up for the Books, they had to keep their set short (45 minutes). Too short for my taste, but the result was really good, probably my favorite BHP show up to now.

Blonde Redhead - Metropolis - October 16th 2010

Band : Blonde Redhead
Venue : Metropolis
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 16th 2010
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
Black Guitar
Here Sometimes
Dr. Strangeluv
SW
Love Or Prison
My Plants Are Dead
Oslo
Falling Man
23
Spring And By Summer Fall
Penny Sparkle
Not Getting There
Melody Of Certain Three
Equus

Comments : Definitely the least interesting Blonde Redhead show I have ever seen. What I heard tonight does not entice me to ever listen to the new album. The old tracks still kind of saved the show for me, but a rather disappointing evening in a venue far too big for them.

Band : The Walkmen
Venue : Cabaret Juste Pour Rire
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 8th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Comments : After missing their show at Osheaga in August I was really happy to see them back in Montreal. A nice show like the last time, but without any bra incidents. It seemed that the audience has changed a bit and I will certainly not complain about this. The band did not seem to have a written setlist on stage and the performance looked very spontaneous.

Atari Teenage Riot - Foufounes Électriques - October 2nd 2010

Band : Atari Teenage Riot
Venue : Foufounes Électriques (Pop Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 2nd 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
Waves Of Disaster
Activate!
Into The Death
No Remorse (I Wanna Die)
Destroy 2000 Years Of Culture
Sick To Death
Deutschland (Has Gotta Die!)
Atari Teenage Riot
Fuck All!
No Success
Midijunkies
Get Up While You Can
Too Dead For Me
U.S. Fade Out
Speed
Not Your Business
Ghostchase
Revolution Action
Start The Riot

Comments : Another day, another reunion. A nice and very energetic show as expected, although everything seems tame after last night's Swans show. I missed Hanin Helias' presence on stage a lot. Still, it was nice to see Nic Endo more up front and KidTronik does a pretty good job replacing Carl Crack.

Swans - Le National - October 1st 2010

Band : Swans
Venue : Le National (Pop Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 1st 2010
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
No Words/No Thoughts
Your Property
Sex, God, Sex
Jim
I Crawled
My Birth
Beautiful Child
Eden Prison
Little Mouth

Comments : I have never been so happy to be wrong about a show. I must confess I was quite skeptical about the Swans reunion, even after hearing the new album. The 1997 show I saw in Lyon for the Swans Are Dead tour was one of my highlights of the 1990s and I had extremely high expectations for tonight. I managed to see the soundcheck in the afternoon and this easily dissipated most of my doubts. If I have to define tonight's performance in one word it will be "huge". Definitely the show of the year or should I say the show of the decade ? The Swans are not dead indeed...

Band : Baby Dee
Venue : Le National (Pop Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 1st 2010
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : When the initial line-up for Pop Montreal was announced, Swans and Baby Dee were the only two shows that stood out for me. I was really happy to see that they were sharing the same bill. The band was the same as the April show at Sala Rossa but Baby Dee played the harp instead of the piano, showing again her virtuosity. A nice show in a great atmosphere to start the evening.

Hrsta - Tothem - September 25th 2010

Band : Hrsta
Venue : Tothem
Town (country) : Trois-Rivières, QC (Canada)
Date : September 25th 2010
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
L'éclat Du Ciel Était Insoutenable
Lime Kiln
21-87
Beau Village
Koror I
Swallow's Tail
The Wagons
...And We Climb
Folkways Orange
Hechicero Del Bosque
Lucy's Sad
Holiday

Comments : Finding venue details for this show was another quest. Happily Mike Moya helped us get the information. We arrived early at the venue (a store) after a visit of the old industrial port of Trois Rivières. We were able to enjoy the soundcheck thanks to the very kind owners of the place. The overall atmosphere of the show was very intimate. There seemed to be a nice turnout for the town. The line-up of Hrsta was the same as last time at Casa, but the mix was more blended and enjoyable. A longer show than what we are used to see this side of the Ocean and a very nice evening, despite the cancellation of the Sam Shalabi show.

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra - Le Cercle - September 24th 2010

Band : Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra
Venue : Le Cercle
Town (country) : Quebec, QC (Canada)
Date : September 24th 2010
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
I Built Myself A Metal Bird
There Is A Light
God Bless Our Dead Marines
Black Water Blowed / Engine Broke Blues
1,000,000 Died To Make This Sound
Microphones In The Trees

Comments : It has been 3 months or so since the Silver Mount Zion tour and this show in Quebec City popped out of nowhere. I have wonderful memories of a previous show in Quebec City and with the Godspeed reunion it might be their last one in a while. So we decided to hit the road. A really nice evening, although no big suprises tonight compared to the other shows I have seen this year. I still hope to see them again some time soon.

Sunn O))) & Boris - ATP New York - September 5th 2010

Band : Sunn O))) & Boris present Altar
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 5th 2010
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : One of the most extreme shows I have ever seen, louder than My Bloody Valentine and Brighter Death Now put together. The extreme use of smoke machines transformed the room into a version of John Carpenter's The Fog while the infrabass made my whole body vibrate. This was only the second time that Sunn O))) and Boris performed Altar live and their individual sounds melded together into a single huge drone. The presence of Jesse Sykes brought a bit of light to this dark mass before taking us even deeper into the core of the earth. A brutal and yet beautiful experience to conclude this year's ATP. Woww.

Comments : This is one of the things that really pissed me off on Sunday: the overlap of the only 2 shows I really wanted to see. I stuck around and managed to watch almost two thirds of The Black Angels before rushing to the main stage to catch Sunn O))) & Boris. As much as I love the band's albums, especially their first one: "Passover", I felt that something was missing from the live show. I found the show a bit disappointing. They are playing in Montreal in November, I will give them another chance.

Grade : 3/5

Comments : I don't know much about the Mississippi blues, but the facts that the dude is well over 80 years old, (he actually doesn't know his exact age), spent 10 years in prison and recovered from a recent stroke, made me want to check it out. An interesting performance and amazing to see that he can still play the guitar and is still a feisty character.

Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions - ATP New York - September 4th 2010

Band : Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions

Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 5th 2010
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : This show left me so uninspired that I literally forgot about it. I was tempted to go see her the last time she played in Montreal and I am quite glad I didn't. Not bad musically per se, but nothing happened, no emotion whatsoever, no stage presence, nothing at all. Well, except for her manager coming up to every single person with a camera and telling them "no flash".

Comments : I was trying to find something interesting to see on Sunday and had enjoyed their tracks on MySpace. Sadly, their live performance was not what I heard. 3 songs was all I could take before leaving the room.
