Hi My Quiet Tsar - Galerie Nota Bene - February 27th 2010

Date : February 27th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Comments : Great to see Eric performing as hi_my_quiet_tsar again ! Just like last time at Le Cagibi, Eric traded his guitar for a keyboard and played a really good set as expected. Very interesting and very different than the usual TQA sets, yet I could still feel the same ambience. I definitely wish Eric would play more often with this project.

Comments : I really enjoyed Erin's show a few moths ago. Tonight's set was probably my favourite one of the evening as she managed to create a great intimate atmosphere in the gallery. A very minimal and ambient performance, very enjoyable.

Comments : A nice and short set by Etienne. Tonight's concert was really different than last time, combining more elements of his past show at Pop Montreal. The use of the keyboard was in perfect balance with the guitar.

Nadja - Le Divan Orange - February 21st 2010

Band : Nadja
Venue : Le Divan Orange
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : February 21st 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Tonight's show was billed as "the last one before they relocate to Berlin". Perhaps not a definite relocation, but Nadja is going on quite a long European tour. Despite the surprisingly low turnout, they played their longest show I have seen so far, including an encore which seemed quite unplanned. I really enjoyed the first 2 tracks and the encore, but was much less convinced by the third track. A good show though, as was expected.

Karl Lemieux / Johnathan Parant / David Bryant / Alexandre St-Onge / Roger Tellier-Craig / Jean-Sébastien Truchy - L'envers - February 13th 2010

Band : Karl Lemieux / Johnathan Parant / David Bryant / Alexandre St-Onge / Roger Tellier-Craig / Jean-Sébastien Truchy
Venue : L'envers
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : February 13th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : The fantastic line-up came close to a Fly Pan Am reunion show. The ensemble played behind a white sheet, giving a very cryptic soundtrack to amazing live reel video projections by Karl Lemieux. Short, intense and almost eerie; a really great show very different from what I was expecting.

Comments : First Thisquietarmy show of the year in Montreal, as Eric is playing here less often nowadays. Just like last time at Casa Del Popolo, Eric played quite a different set than usual which included new songs. Nice as expected.

The Residents - Club Soda - February 12th 2010

Band : The Residents
Venue : Club Soda
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : February 12th 2010
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I was extremely excited to see the Residents again, despite the fact that tonight's show was taking place at the infamous Club Soda. As with any Residents' show, I really did not know what to expect which made the anticipation even greater. The band, now a trio, took us on a journey deep into their schizophrenic universe. A truly fantastic performance, which will probably be one of the best shows of the year. Lamentably, the eyeballs were not present on this tour.

Sam Shalabi / Josh Zubot / Simon Trottier - Le Cagibi - February 9th 2010

Band : Sam Shalabi / Josh Zubot / Simon Trottier
Venue : Le Cagibi
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : February 9th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I know some of you might start to think that I go to see Sam Shalabi too much these days. Well, tonight's concert had really nothing to do with last week's. An interesting 30 minutes improvised set, where Sam's and Josh's sounds complemented each other really well. I am less enthousiastic about the third member who was mostly playing on his own without any real connection to what the others were doing. There was however a really amazing moment about halfway through the show.

k.a.n.t n.a.g.a.n.o - Sala Rossa - February 3rd 2010

Band : k.a.n.t n.a.g.a.n.o
Venue : Sala Rossa
City (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : February 3rd 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Tonight's show entitled "La Convergence Des Faisceaux Interstitiels" was also the release party for the band's first album "Existe" and featured the video artist David Jhave Johnston. A very different concert from those I have seen before. A nice show as expected and the rather abstract title of the performance fitted the evening perfectly.

Sam Shalabi / Radwan Ghazi Moumneh / Ariel Engle - Restaurant Kaza Maza - February 1st 2010

Band : Sam Shalabi / Radwan Ghazi Moumneh / Ariel Engle
Venue : Restaurant Kaza Maza
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : February 1st 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Finding out when and where this show was going to happen felt like a treasure hunt. It was originally scheduled as Land Of Kush at the Sala Rossa Restaurant, got cancelled, rebooked, moved etc. It ended up being a trio, playing Land Of Kush songs with a Jerusalem In My Heart touch. A very interesting show in an unusual set up.
