Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra - Mayfair Theatre - May 31st 2010

Band : Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra
Venue : Mayfair Theatre
Town (country) : Ottawa, ON (Canada)
Date : May 31st 2010
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
I Built Myself A Metal Bird
There Is A Light
Black Water Blowed / Engine Broke Blues
God Bless Our Dead Marines
13 Blues For Thirteen Moons
There's A River In The Valley Made Of Melting Snow

Comments : A very nice show in a very nice venue : an old cinema. However, based on previous experiences, I have noticed that live concerts in unconventional venues can often be a train wreck. The cinema was unbearably hot and the sound quite mediocre. The band played on the floor with very low lights. The big cinema seats made me feel my fourth row seat was actually in the middle on the room. A shorter set than in Europe, but a really nice complement to last month's Paris show.

Mono - Sala Rossa - May 27th 2010

Band : Mono
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : May 27th 2010
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Ashes In The Snow
Burial At Sea
The Kidnapper Bell
Pure As Snow
Sabbath
Yearning
Follow The Map
Halcyon (Beautiful Days)
Everlasting Light

Comments : I finally found what has been bothering me about Mono shows all this time : the audience. Tonight, the Casa looked like a reunion of "the plaid bermuda short appreciation society". Best in show was the dude sporting the "great kisser, satisfaction guaranteed" tee-shirt. Gladly, tonight's show started on time and I managed to secure a quiet spot in the dead center. The band gave a really great performance (undoubtedly the best I have seen so far), although I think it would have added to the intensity if it were a bit shorter.

Mains De Givre - Casa Del Popolo - May 20th 2010

Band : Mains De Givre
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : May 20th 2010
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : After a few technical problems, Eric played his second set of the night, this time as part of the duo Mains De Givre. Sadly, I was much less convinced by this performance. I found the show maybe a bit too long and Eric's guitar mixed way too low compared to the violin. Still nice to see, but definitely less my cup of tea than Thisquietarmy.

Band : Thisquietarmy
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : May 20th 2010

Comments : A short but really great show by Eric; actually the best one I have seen in a long time. A nice set-up with a movie projection on two walls of the room.

Vomito Negro - Usine C - May 13th 2010

Band : Vomito Negro
Venue : Usine C (Kinitik Festival)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : May 13th 2010
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : The shows were already running an hour and a half behind schedule when Vomito Negro came on stage. The venue had started to empty. The band, playing as a duo tonight, started with a similar set to last year's in Waregem but still very efficient. Less than 20 minutes later, lights were turned on and the sound was turned off by "the police" (although the police wasn't physically there). Pretty sad for a band who travelled from Belgium and for people like me who had to suffer through painfully uninspiring and uninspired acts to see them. This left a pretty bitter taste in my mouth. An overpriced festival I will be happy to skip next year.

Leaether Strip - Usine C - May 13th 2010

Band : Leaether Strip
Venue : Usine C (Kinitik Festival)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : May 13th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I never thought I'd see Leatherstrip live, but I heared very mixed reviews about his recent live shows so I did not know what to expect. Well, I enjoyed it. A nice setlist including Japanese Bodies and a fantsatic cover of Sex Dwarf with Claus Larsen actually playing live keyboard sequences from time to time (as opposite of just having the track played off his laptop).

Extra : "Japanese Bodies" (video)

Tyske Ludder - Usine C - May 13th 2010

Band : Tyske Ludder
Venue : Usine C (Kinitik Festival)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : May 13th 2010
Grade : 1/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I have to confess that the only reason I stayed for this show is because I wanted to secure a good spot for the bands playing after. The concert started with a playback of the first message sent to Scientology by Anonymous. The singer was wearing a "V For Vendetta" mask (I hate that movie), the "drummer" was dressed like Schwarzenegger in Commando. He spent most of the show in front of the stage (as opposed to behind his electronic drums - go figure). The show ended by an anti-Bush song (or maybe it was pro-Bush - I don't know, they were singing in German along with the audience). Simply painful.

16 Volt - Usine C - May 13th 2010

Band : 16 Volt
Venue : Usine C (Kinitik Festival)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : May 13th 2010
Grade : 1/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I arrived just in time to see 16 Volt. I used to like them back 15 years ago or so and I was a bit disappointed when they cancelled their show opening for Frontline Assembly at Café Campus. Well, it did not take more than a couple of songs to realize the cancellation was no great loss. I actually got bored pretty fast and left before the end.
