Aki Onda - Casa Del Popolo - June 22nd 2010

Band : Aki Onda
Venue : Casa Del Popolo (Suoni Per Il Popolo)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 22nd 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Who wants to see an ambient show at 11:30 when your ticket says doors at 8:30 ? Despite this annoying schedule and a couple of forgettable opening acts who bored me to death, I really enjoyed Aki's show. I managed to secure a good spot and was able to fully enjoy the sounds coming from the amps on stage instead of only the PA. A very nice show as expected.

Oneida - Casa Del Popolo - June 12th 2010

Band : Oneida
Venue : Casa Del Popolo (Suoni Per Il Popolo)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 12th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I was glad to be able to see Oneida on their own after the ATP experience. A very nice show, except for the very late start and the annoying drunk, chatty couple at the beginning of the concert. The encore was slightly less intense. I wonder who was the guy playing the bass on the floor during one track ?

Grouper - 5139 St-Laurent - June 11th 2010

Band : Grouper
Venue : 5139 St-Laurent
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 11th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Probably the perfect set up for a Grouper concert. The intimate location fit perfectly with the intimate music and I am glad I chose to go to this concert instead of the one at the Casa Del Popolo for Suoni. Without any break between their sets, Les Beyond left the stage and Grouper started her own. A very smooth transition and a very nice show.

Les Beyond - 5139 St-Laurent - June 11th 2010

Band : Les Beyond
Venue : 5139 St-Laurent
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 11th 2010
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : A private show in the backyard of a townhouse, a very nice and friendly ambience and a good vegetarian BBQ as well. Erin played with two special guests tonight. The first one was a neighbor who started loudly complaining of the noise 15 minutes into the show. The second, more pleasant, was Grouper. The duo with Grouper was simply excellent and both sounds blended perfectly.

Arcade Fire - Stationnement Du Centre D'achats Place Longueuil - June 9th 2010

Band : Arcade Fire
Venue : Stationnement Du Centre D'achats Place Longueuil
Town (country) : Longueuil, QC (Canada)
Date : June 9th 2010
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Ready To Start
Month Of May
No Cars Go
Haïti
Intervention
Modern Man
Rococo
Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)
The Suburbs
We Used To Wait
Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)
Rebellion (Lies)
Keep The Car Running
Wake Up

Comments : Having given up on them after their first album, I was a bit sceptical about this show. The idea of a free show in a suburbian mall parking lot kind of caught on me. We showed up in advance which secured us a spot in the front, and most of the 10.000 people attendance were behind us. I actually really enjoyed the performance a lot. I found it a bit too staged and not spontaneous, but still pretty good to see.

Elizabeth Anka Vajagic - Sala Rossa - June 6th 2010

Band : Elizabeth Anka Vajagic
Venue : Sala Rossa (Suoni Per Il Popolo)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 6th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : It has been a very long time since Elizabeth has played in town (or even played at all ?) and I have always enjoyed her shows a lot. Tonight, she performed a short solo set, standing up with a cast on her foot. However, it felt like something was lacking and I was a bit disappointed by her performance.

Hrsta - Sala Rossa - June 6th 2010

Band : Hrsta
Venue : Sala Rossa (Suoni Per Il Popolo)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 6th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
The Wagons
Saturn Of Chagrin
Lime Kiln
Swallow's Tail
Kalimba / Holiday
Beau Village

Comments : Without any doubt, this is the show I was most looking forward to see this evening. I will not rant again about the lack of Hrsta shows here, but you know... A different line-up than what we are used to. Where is Eric ? The sound mix was a bit off, Mike stood out from the rest of the band. I wasn't able to tell whether this was intentional or due to the technical issues they had at the beginning. A short and intimate show, good as expected with a nice setlist and one encore. Maybe not the best Hrsta show I have seen, but still really good to see.

Radwan Ghazi Moumneh / Ariel Engle - Sala Rosa - June 6th 2010

Band : Radwan Ghazi Moumneh / Ariel Engle

Venue : Sala Rossa (Suoni Per Il Popolo)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 6th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Originally annouced as a four-piece project featuring Sam Shalabi and Hrair Hratchian, I was expecting something similar to the February 1st show at Kaza Maza. Changed to a duo at the last minute, it was more electronic, really different, but still pretty good. A very short (5 minutes) piece, unexpected and very enjoyable as usual.

Elfin Saddle - Sala Rossa - June 6th 2010

Band : Elfin Saddle
Venue : Sala Rossa (Suoni Per Il Popolo)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 6th 2010
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Tonight is a special evening celebrating the opening of the annual Suoni festival and 13th anniversary of one of my favourite labels : Constellation Records. Bands and friends of the label were performing short sets. The first band was a newly signed artist whose record did not really convince me. Sadly, the live set left me with the same impression and quite uninterested in their performance.

Thee Silver Mt Zion -Ukrainian Federation - June 5th 2010

Band : Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra
Venue : Ukrainian Federation
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 5th 2010
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
I Built Myself A Metal Bird
There Is A Light
Kollaps Tradixionales
God Bless Our Dead Marines
13 Blues For Thirteen Moons
There's A River In The Valley Made Of Melting Snow

Comments : Another great show as expected. The promoter had the good sense to put up fans in the venue which helped fight the heat. Maybe slightly less intense than last night and with a younger audience, but still a really good show. A nice setlist as well, complementary to last night.

Thee Silver Mt Zion Memorial Orchestra - Ukrainian Federation - June 4th 2010

Band : Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra
Venue : Ukrainian Federation
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 4th 2010
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
I Built Myself A Metal Bird
There Is A Light
Black Water Blowed / Engine Broke Blues
God Bless Our Dead Marines
1,000,000 Died To Make This Sound
Microphones In The Trees

Comments : Tonight's show was undoubtedly the best one I've seen on this tour and amongst the best I have ever seen from the band. The set was great, longer than Ottawa's and despite the stifling heat in the venue - nearing the painful toward the end - the audience was nice, interactive and respectful. A very nice evening, see you tomorrow !

Nurse With Wound - Monument National - June 3rd 2010

Band : Nurse With Wound
Venue : Monument National (Mutek)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 3rd 2010
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : One of the shows I was looking forward to the most, a once in a lifetime opportunity to see this cult project. I had extremely high expectations and I wasn't at all disappointed. The concert started delightfully abstract, dark and introspective and finished very energetic and powerful. There was one "movement" with a female vocalist which failed to convince me, but the rest easily made up for it. The show also featured amazing video projections. Industrial music for industrial people ! One of the top shows of the year.
