Comments : After the very good experience in Longueuil, I was more than happy to see them again. Tonight's performance was very different visually-speaking with a huge light show. Less intimate but still a pretty good one.

The National - Osheaga - July 31st 2010

Band : The National
Venue : Parc Jean Drapeau (Osheaga)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)

Comments : This is a band I'd been wanting to see for a long time. Sadly, I saw most of the show from the side of the stage, as I was trying to secure a decent spot for tonight's festival headliner.

Pavement - Osheaga - July 31st 2010

Band : Pavement
Venue : Parc Jean Drapeau (Osheaga)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 31st 2010
Grade : 2/5

Starlings Of The Slipstream
Unfair
Spit On A Stranger
Silent Kit

Comments : Definitely not a reunion I was really waiting for. I went to see them back in 1994 (mostly because Stereolab was the opening act) and I remember getting pretty bored. As my friend wanted to see the show so I thought I'd give them another try. Sadly, today's concert confirmed my previous feelings. Oh well.

Rob Zombie - Heavy MTL - July 25th 2010

Band : Rob Zombie
Venue : Parc Jean Drapeau (Heavy MTL)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 25th 2010
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
What Lurks On Channel X?
Superbeast
Scum Of The Earth
Living Dead Girl
More Human Than Human
Sick Bubble-Gum
House Of 1000 Corpses
Never Gonna Stop (The Red, Red Kroovy)
Mars Needs Women
Thunder Kiss '65
School's Out
Dragula

Comments : I have been more interested in Rob Zombie as a filmaker than as a musician lately. Not a single minute of disappointement here: the show was huge. Best theatrics and set up I have ever seen (even better than Madonna) and pretty good musically as well. The band featured ex-Marilyn Manson's member John 5 on the guitar, but no more Sherry Moon Zombie. A very nice setlist, including a couple of White Zombie songs and an Alice Cooper cover. What more can you ask ?

Alice Cooper - Heavy MTL - July 24th 2010

Band : Alice Cooper
Venue : Parc Jean Drapeau (Heavy MTL)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 24th 2010
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
School's Out
No More Mr. Nice Guy
I'm Eighteen
Wicked Young Man
Ballad Of Dwight Fry
Go To Hell
Guilty
Cold Ethyl
Poison
From The Inside
Vengeance Is Mine
Dirty Diamonds
Billion Dollar Babies
I Love The Dead
Feed My Frankenstein
Under My Wheels

Comments : My main disappointement of the day. I got bored musically pretty fast actually. However, there were very nice theatrics throughout the whole show, making it obvious where Marilyn Manson took his ideas from.

Slayer - Heavy MTL - July 24th 2010

Band : Slayer
Venue : Parc Jean Drapeau (Heavy MTL)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 24th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
World Painted Blood
Hate Worldwide
War Ensemble
Blood Red
Spirit In Black
Expendable Youth
Dead Skin Mask
Hallowed Point
Skeletons Of Society
Temptation
Born Of Fire
Seasons In The Abyss
South Of Heaven
Angel Of Death

Comments : Last time I saw Slayer was quite a train wreck vocals-wise. Today's show featured the entire Seasons In The Abyss album, plus a few more classics and it sounded much better. The front of the stage was packed a while before the show which made moving up quite impossible, but I guess being up front at a Slayer concert is probably not the brightest idea anyways.

Rob Halford - Heavy MTL - July 24th 2010

Band : Rob Halford
Venue : Parc Jean Drapeau (Heavy MTL)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 24th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
Resurrection
Made In Hell
Golgotha
Rock The World Forever
Made Of Metal
Crystal
Heart Of A Lion
Saviour
Never Satisfied
Silent Screams

Comments : I was not really expecting anything from the show. I went to the front of the stage mostly because my friends wanted to see it. Well, I am glad I did : a nice stage presence and still a great voice. I had a good time despite the absence of Judas Priest songs in the setlist, but I guess the physical resemblance to Andrew Eldritch made up for it.

Fear Factory - Heavy MTL - July 24th 2010

Band : Fear Factory
Venue : Parc Jean Drapeau (Heavy MTL)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 24th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Last time I saw Fear Factory was over 10 years ago. I had no clue what they were up to nowadays. A very short set (less than 30 minutes), but still very efficient, which included quite a lot of old tracks. I was less impressed by them than I was back then, but it was still nice to see them.

Melissa Auf Der Maur - Heavy MTL - July 24th 2010

Band : Melissa Auf Der Maur
Venue : Parc Jean Drapeau (Heavy MTL)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 24th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : A rather "light" act compared to the rest of the festival, but it was nice to see Melissa doing her own stuff. A short 30 minutes concert, maybe not the show of the year but still quite good for what it is.

Steven Severin - Théâtre Rialto - July 22nd 2010

Band : Steven Severin
Venue : Théâtre Rialto (Fantasia)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 22nd 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Since the split of Siouxsie & The Banshees, Steven Severin has been concentrating on movie soundtracks composition and I was quite excited to see him performing his work live. Originally billed by the festival as "Le Sang Du Poète" by Jean Cocteau, the evening featured 2 parts, the second consisting of Steven's work "Music For Silents": soundtracks written for various shorts. The combination of the films and the music was interesting, but no cigar (and no guitar on stage either). Not being a huge Cocteau fan, the best part of the show for me was undoubtedly "The Seashell & The Clergymen", followed by "Magic Mirror Twins" amongst the contemporary short shorts. Sadly, poor organization had essentially ruined the experience: 2 and a half hours waiting for 2 hours of movies and music.

Les Beyond - Le Cagibi - July 15th 2010

Band : Les Beyond
Venue : Le Cagibi
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 15th 2010
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Another great show by Erin as usual, the cosy atmosphere of Le Cagibi fitting perfectly with her intimate music. Les Beyond has definitely become my favorite local artist these days.

Cloudscapes - Le Cagibi - July 15th 2010

Band : Cloudscapes
Venue : Le Cagibi
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 15th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Tonight Etienne chose to play on his own amp instead of the PA of Le Cagibi. This sounded like a good idea, knowing that the sound system there is not always reliable. The beginning of the set was way too quiet volume wise, but improved towards the end. I will make the same remark towards the intensity of the performance which became really great on the second part. Another pretty good show anyways.

Emir Kusturica & The No Smoking Orchestra - Scène TD - July 5th 2010

Band : Emir Kusturica & The No Smoking Orchestra

Venue : Scène TD (Festival International De Jazz De Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 5th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I am more interested in Emir Kusturica's films (Chat Noir Chat Blanc remains one of my favorite movies of all time), but I still decided to check this one out. It was actualy pretty good, not my usual fair, but a great set up, funky costumes and a fun ambience on stage. Emir Kusturica plays a small role in the band (playing the guitar), but the set did include some tracks from his movies. The intense heat wave did not stop me and the other 100.000 (yes one hundred thousand !) people from checking out this free event.

Laurie Anderson / Lou Reed / John Zorn - Salle Wilfried Pelletier - July 2nd 2010

Band : Laurie Anderson / Lou Reed / John Zorn
Venue : Salle Wilfried Pelletier (Festival International De Jazz De Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 2nd 2010
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Not the "show" of the year, but definitely the "event" of the year. A nice collage of the sounds of the three artists, in a nice setting. There were some really great musical moments (especially during the fantastic third piece), but way too short for the expensive ticket price. I thought Lou's guitar was mixed way too low compared to the other instruments. Some rude audience members who obviously did not "get it" (or were they scared by what they did not understand?) booed and left after the second song. It is amazing that an established artist such as Lou Reed can generate so much controversy even today. It is probably similar to the mainstream reaction to the Velvet Underground when they first started. Oh, well, experimental music is definitely not for everyone, and I am certainly not complaining about the show.

Uncle Monk - Pub Heineken - July 2nd 2010

Band : Uncle Monk
Venue : Pub Heineken (Festival International De Jazz De Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 2nd 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : A free open air show by Tommy Ramone's new band caught my interest, despite the total change in musical direction. The setlist included improbable bluegrass covers of The Ramones' "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend" and The Clash's "I Fought The Law". Unfortunately, the seated and fenced "venue" was packed with festival goers more interested in banal conversation over a beer than the show. I guess the "free" event was more of an excuse for forced consumption of the main Dutch brew, and money was more important than music.

John Zorn's Masada Marathon - Théatre Maisonneuve - July 1st 2010

Band : John Zorn's Masada Marathon
Venue : Théatre Maisonneuve (Festival International De Jazz De Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 1st 2010
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Two hours and a half of music with short sets by Mark Feldman & Sylvie Courvoisier, Dreamers, Uri Caine, Masada String Trio, and Electric Masada. While the first and third acts did not fully convince me, I enjoyed the second and fourth ones. But it is definitely the Electric Masada concert which made my evening. The best Masada show I have seen so far, bizarre, brutal and yet so sharp. I am glad I chose this "late" performance over the earlier one with Acoustic Masada. Amazing !
