Hrsta - Tothem - September 25th 2010

Band : Hrsta
Venue : Tothem
Town (country) : Trois-Rivières, QC (Canada)
Date : September 25th 2010
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
L'éclat Du Ciel Était Insoutenable
Lime Kiln
21-87
Beau Village
Koror I
Swallow's Tail
The Wagons
...And We Climb
Folkways Orange
Hechicero Del Bosque
Lucy's Sad
Holiday

Comments : Finding venue details for this show was another quest. Happily Mike Moya helped us get the information. We arrived early at the venue (a store) after a visit of the old industrial port of Trois Rivières. We were able to enjoy the soundcheck thanks to the very kind owners of the place. The overall atmosphere of the show was very intimate. There seemed to be a nice turnout for the town. The line-up of Hrsta was the same as last time at Casa, but the mix was more blended and enjoyable. A longer show than what we are used to see this side of the Ocean and a very nice evening, despite the cancellation of the Sam Shalabi show.

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra - Le Cercle - September 24th 2010

Band : Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra
Venue : Le Cercle
Town (country) : Quebec, QC (Canada)
Date : September 24th 2010
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
I Built Myself A Metal Bird
There Is A Light
God Bless Our Dead Marines
Black Water Blowed / Engine Broke Blues
1,000,000 Died To Make This Sound
Microphones In The Trees

Comments : It has been 3 months or so since the Silver Mount Zion tour and this show in Quebec City popped out of nowhere. I have wonderful memories of a previous show in Quebec City and with the Godspeed reunion it might be their last one in a while. So we decided to hit the road. A really nice evening, although no big suprises tonight compared to the other shows I have seen this year. I still hope to see them again some time soon.

Sunn O))) & Boris - ATP New York - September 5th 2010

Band : Sunn O))) & Boris present Altar
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 5th 2010
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : One of the most extreme shows I have ever seen, louder than My Bloody Valentine and Brighter Death Now put together. The extreme use of smoke machines transformed the room into a version of John Carpenter's The Fog while the infrabass made my whole body vibrate. This was only the second time that Sunn O))) and Boris performed Altar live and their individual sounds melded together into a single huge drone. The presence of Jesse Sykes brought a bit of light to this dark mass before taking us even deeper into the core of the earth. A brutal and yet beautiful experience to conclude this year's ATP. Woww.

The Black Angels - ATP New York - September 5th 2010

Band : The Black Angels
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 5th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : This is one of the things that really pissed me off on Sunday: the overlap of the only 2 shows I really wanted to see. I stuck around and managed to watch almost two thirds of The Black Angels before rushing to the main stage to catch Sunn O))) & Boris. As much as I love the band's albums, especially their first one: "Passover", I felt that something was missing from the live show. I found the show a bit disappointing. They are playing in Montreal in November, I will give them another chance.

T Model Ford - ATP New York - September 5th 2010

Band : T Model Ford
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 5th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I don't know much about the Mississippi blues, but the facts that the dude is well over 80 years old, (he actually doesn't know his exact age), spent 10 years in prison and recovered from a recent stroke, made me want to check it out. An interesting performance and amazing to see that he can still play the guitar and is still a feisty character.

Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions - ATP New York - September 4th 2010

Band : Hope Sandoval & The Warm Inventions

Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 5th 2010
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : This show left me so uninspired that I literally forgot about it. I was tempted to go see her the last time she played in Montreal and I am quite glad I didn't. Not bad musically per se, but nothing happened, no emotion whatsoever, no stage presence, nothing at all. Well, except for her manager coming up to every single person with a camera and telling them "no flash".

Vivian Girls - ATP New York - September 5th 2010

Band : Vivian Girls
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 5th 2010
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I was trying to find something interesting to see on Sunday and had enjoyed their tracks on MySpace. Sadly, their live performance was not what I heard. 3 songs was all I could take before leaving the room.

Thurston Moore - ATP New York - September 5th 2010

Band : Thurston Moore
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 5th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : This last minute addition to the weak Sunday line-up was definitely great news for me. The show was divided in two very distinct parts. It started with new songs played by Thurston on the acoustic guitar and then he was joined by Bill Nace on guitar for an experimental second half. Very enjoyable and a nice trip into Thurston Moore's universe.

Sonic Youth - ATP New York - September 4th 2010

Band : Sonic Youth
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 4th 2010
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
Candle
The Sprawl
Cross The Breeze
Catholic Block
Stereo Sanctity
Eric's Trip
Death Valley'69
Shadow Of A Doubt
Hey Joni
The Wonder
Hyperstation
Shaking Hell
White Cross

Comments : I did not get the chance to see Sonic Youth on their recent tour where they played the entire Daydream Nation. Tonight's show made up for it. A very different show from the one at Osheaga and probably one of the best ones I have seen by them: an epic setlist, great versions, great atmosphere on stage. The perfect way to conclude day two of the festival. One of the best shows of the year for me.

Explosions In The Sky - ATP New York - September 4th 2010

Band : Explosions In The Sky
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 4th 2010
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Memorial
The Birth And Death Of The Day
New song II
Catastrophe And The Cure
Greet Death
The Only Moment We Were Alone

Comments : My previous experience with Explosions In The Sky was marred by an uninterested and chatty audience. Today, I secured a front row spot and could fully enjoy their set. A great and very intense show. The band performed songs from their upcoming album so I hope to see them again soon.

The Breeders - ATP New York - September 4th 2010

Band : The Breeders
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 4th 2010
Grade : 1/5

Setlist :
No Aloha
Huffer
Bang On
Walk It Off
Divine Hammer
Night Of Joy
Metal Man
Oh!
Do You Love Me Now?
New Year
Cannonball
I Just Wanna Get Along
Happiness Is a Warm Gun
Iris
Tipp City
Fate to Fatal
Drivin' On 9
Saints
Safari
Here No More

Comments : What a train wreck! Last time I saw them in Barcelona the show was a bit clumsy, but tonight it was simply a disaster, painful to watch. The only reason I stayed up front was to secure my spot for the rest of the evening.

Shellac - ATP New York - September 4th 2010

Band : Shellac
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 4th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
Paco
Ghosts
Steady As She Goes
Compliant
Copper
Gary, Indiana
The End Of Radio
?
Squirrel Song
Dude, Incredible

Comments : Shellac is not really one of my favorites so I didn't really mind missing the beginning of the set in order see Bardo Pond on the other stage (schedule overlaps). Last time I saw them I actually got bored, but this time I really enjoyed their short set. The song The End Of The Radio (thanks Emmanuel for the title) really made it for me.

Bardo Pond - ATP New York - September 4th 2010

Band : Bardo Pond
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 4th 2010
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Limerick
Sometimes Words
Absence
? (new)
Tommy Gun Angel
Karwan
? (new)

Comments : I had to rush to the second stage after Tortoise to catch Bardo Pond, but I really did not want to miss them. Gladly, I managed to get a good spot. A nice show as expected, including some new songs. The singer Isobel got upset at the rest of the band when they decided to play one more song despite the schedule; funny to watch.

Tortoise - ATP New York - September 4th 2010

Band : Tortoise
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 4th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
High Class Slim Came Floatin' In
Gigantes
Monica
In Sarah, Mencken, Christ, And Beethoven There Were Women And Men
Eros
Glass Museum
Prepare Your Coffin
Charteroak Foundation > Dot/Eyes
Salt The Skies
Crest

Comments : A nice one, but I found today's show maybe a bit too conventional. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy Tortoise and I had a good time watching them once again, but I felt like something was missing this time.

Fursaxa - ATP New York - September 4th 2010

Band : Fursaxa
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 4th 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I remember seeing a fantastic show of Fursaxa in Lyon few years ago. Sadly, I had to leave half-way through the performance due to schedule overlap. Today, she performed as part of a trio. The result was maybe less intense than when I had seen her solo, but I still enjoyed what I saw.

Text Of Light - ATP New York - September 4th 2010

Band : Text Of Light
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 4th 2010
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Having seen Lee Ranaldo solo and with other collaborators in the past, this was a show I was looking forward to see. Sadly, the result was a bit self-indulgent. Everyone seemed to play on their own. There was definitely no cohesion or complementarity on stage.

Jim Jarmusch & Thurston Moore - ATP New York - September 4th 2010

Band : Jim Jarmusch & Thurston Moore
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 4th 2010
Grade : n/a

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Originally scheduled as a discussion on Criterion Cinema, the conversation very quickly evolved into a history of the New York underground scene. No complaints about this! Thurston and Jim answered previously submitted questions but also took some from the audience. The overall atmosphere was more like having a chat with a couple of friends than a lecture by these two icons. Very cool indeed !

Iggy & The Stooges - ATP New York - September 3rd 2010

Band : Iggy & The Stooges
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 3rd 2010
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
Raw Power
Search And Destroy
Gimmie Danger
Your Pretty Face Is Going To Hell
Shake Appeal
I Need Somebody
Penetration
Death Trip
1970
Night Theme
Beyond The Law
I Got A Right
I Wanna Be Your Dog
Open Up And Bleed
Funhouse
No Fun

Comments : The show I was most looking forward to see. I had seen Iggy Pop quite a lot in the past, but I managed to miss every single Stooges show since the reunion. Raw Power is maybe not the album I would have chosen to see, but who cares? A fantastic show as expected, undoubtedly one of the top ones of the year.

Mudhoney - ATP New York - September 3rd 2010

Band : Mudhoney
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 3rd 2010
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
Touch Me I'm Sick
Sweet Young Thing (Ain't Sweet No More)
Twenty Four
Need
Chain That Door
Mudride
No One Has
If It Think
In 'N' Out Of Grace
Halloween
Burn In Clean
You Got It
Hate The Police

Comments : I have never been a big Mudhoney fan so this was not a reunion (was it a reunion anyways?) I was especially looking forward to see. The band played their album "Superfuzz Bigmuff" as well as some early singles. The show left me quite uninspired.

The Scientists - ATP New York - September 3rd 2010

Band : The Scientists
Venue : Kutshers Country Club (ATP New York)
Town (country) : Monticello, NY (USA)
Date : September 3rd 2010
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Back to ATP for the third time, although the line-up is personally less exciting than the previous years. I had recently discovered The Scientists. They played their very first US show today, performing their album "Blood Red River". A nice show but maybe a bit below my expectations, except for the amazing drummer. A good start to the festival anyways.
