Hi My Quiet Tsar - Le Cagibi - December 29th 2011

Band : Hi My Quiet Tsar
Venue : Le Cagibi
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : December 29th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : It has been a while since I heard a synth set by Eric and there couldn't have been a better way to conclude both this year of concerts and this evening amongst friends. Again, the soundboard took away from fully appreciating the improvised set, which seemed a bit longer than the others.

Alexandre St-Onge - Le Cagibi - December 29th 2011

Band : Alexandre St-Onge
Venue : Le Cagibi
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : December 29th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : A true avant-garde set. I kind of preferred the first part of the show to the second one, but I am probably being a bit picky here. Extremely enjoyable as usual.

Cloudscapes - Le Cagibi - December 29th 2011

Band : Cloudscapes
Venue : Le Cagibi
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : December 29th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : A really good one by Etienne, with a cool video this time ! I really enjoyed his show despite the really annoying sound glitches coming from Le Cagibi’s dying soundboard. (I really wish they would invest in a new one for 2012.) I hope to hear the material performed tonight soon on a much better sound system. It certainly deserves it!

Exhaust - Casa Del Popolo - December 16th 2011

Band : Exhaust
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : December 16th 2011
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : The Casa was packed when Exhaust started their show. A really nice set by one of my long-time favourite bands off Constellation Records. Tonight was the release party of their first album since 2002, although not on Constellation... A great general atmosphere and a great evening ! I know they don't play often, but I hope to see them again soon. For those who didn’t make it tonight, you missed a great show.

Thisquietarmy - Casa Del Popolo - December 16th 2011

Band : Thisquietarmy
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : December 16th 2011
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Another very nice show by Eric, as expected. A good setlist, including my all-time favourite "Warchitects". Maybe a little bit too long towards the end, but still really enjoyable.

Martin Tétreault Et Son Quatuor De Tourne-disques - Musée D'art Contemporain - November 30th 2011

Band : Martin Tétreault Et Son Quatuor De Tourne-disques
Venue : Musée D'art Contemporain - Salle Beverly Webster Rolph
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 30th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Undoubtedly the best opening act of the Godspeed shows I have seen this year, I decided to give him another try. Add to the fact that it was a free show and the last one of the Triennale, it was not to be missed. Tonight, Martin Tétreault did not really "play", but conducted a quartet of turntables. The result was as interesting as expected (the first track was actually amazing). I was a bit disappointed that Martin did not take part in the quartet and I also found the performance a tad too long. Unsurprisingly, the turnout for a true "avant garde" show was much lower than my two previous experiences at this series.

Hangedup - Sala Rossa - November 21st 2011

Band : Hangedup
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 21st 2011
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I was so glad to see Hangedup once again. Tonight's concert featured video projections by Kenneth Thomas which worked nicely with the music. The set was played in one bloc with no break between the songs and included a lot of new material (can we hope for a new release soon ?). A really great and unique event.

Cloudscapes - Le Cagibi - November 11th 2011

Band : Cloudscapes
Venue : Le Cagibi
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 11th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : It started with what could have been an alternative soundtrack to Blade Runner and quickly evolved into 6 (?) different parts. A less seamless set than usual, where each part sounded like a short song. Also a much "darker" set than usual. Interesting.

Rei Rea - Le Cagibi - November 11th 2011

Band : Rei Rea
Venue : Le Cagibi
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 11th 2011
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Probably one of my favourite Rei Rea shows to date. Christian used both a harmonica and an old string instrument to play an ambient and organic set. Extremely enjoyable. I know Christian plays the same set using the same gear only once, but I really hope he does something in this vein once again in the future.

Tim Hecker - Musée D'art Contemporain - November 9th 2011

Band : Tim Hecker
Venue : Musée D'art Contemporain - Salle Beverly Webster Rolph
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 9th 2011
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I don't really get the concept of playing in complete darkness. I mean, the whole idea is to see the performer playing live, isn't it ? Anyways, for seating, the museum gave us a choice between a stool and a yoga mat. I went for the second option. We entered a darkened room filled with smoke and we found a spot right in front of Tim Hecker. The show (or should I say the music?) was pretty much the same as my previous experiences, but I did not find his set interesting enough to make up for the lack of visual activity. I noticed a faster rhythm in the set. As soon as I would start to let myself drown in a particular sound scape, a different one would appear. Hmmm.

k.a.n.t n.a.g.a.n.o - Casa Del Popolo - November 6th 2011

Band : k.a.n.t n.a.g.a.n.o
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 6th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Tonight's show started much harsher and more dissonant than usual, but the sounds became more familiar throughout the show. Mind you, dissonant does not mean less interesting here, so I had a pretty great time as usual.

Esprits Frappeurs - Casa Del Popolo - November 6th 2011

Band : Esprits Frappeurs
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 6th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : A very different set-up than last time, as the movie projectors were facing the audience tonight and seemed to create more of an atmosphere than simple film projections. The show started really great but the power went out about 10 minutes into the set. The trio started again, but it took a little longer to get back into it again. Still very interesting though.

Wednesday, 2 November 2011

Karl Lemieux / Jonathan Parant / David Bryant / Kevin Doria - Musée D'art Contemporain - November 2nd 2011

Band : Karl Lemieux / Jonathan Parant / David Bryant / Kevin Doria
Venue : Musée D'art Contemporain - Salle Beverly Webster Rolph
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 2nd 2011
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : A free show part of the Triennale at the Museum, but you have to get (free) tickets in advance to get in. Luckily one of our friends managed to get us a couple. A really great set in a very comfortable environment, probably the best soundtrack to Karl's video manipulations I have seen. A very nice 35 minutes journey, and also the first time I saw Karl using colour films.

Gillian Welch - Le National - October 25th 2011

Band : Gillian Welch
Venue : Le National
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 25th 2011
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : And now for something different. I went to the show by accident after Madame played one of her records at home. Am I glad I went! A very nice show split in 2 sets, although the 30 minutes break in between felt a tad long. The acoustic duo managed to put more ambiance and energy in the sold out theatre than the wall of amps in last night's show (Boris). A very enjoyable performance for me. The duo seemed really happy to be playing Montreal for the first time and truly touched by the crowd's roaring reception. They played for almost 2 hours and came back for 3 encores, including a cover of Johnny Cash's "Jackson".

Boris - Cabaret Mile End - October 24th 2011

Band : Boris
Venue : Cabaret Mile End
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 24th2011
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : After last year's amazing shows, I had very high expectations of this one. I must say I was truly disappointed by tonight's setlist and the total lack of emotion from the stage. I did not really get into their set, except maybe for a couple of songs. Gladly, the show was shorter than last time.

The Tiger Lillies - Usine C - October 21st 2011

Band : The Tiger Lillies
Venue : Usine C
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 21st 2011
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Back to Usine C. Tonight, we scored second-row-center seats. The track list was quite similar to last night's, but we found the show way more dynamic. Really glad we went both nights. I hope to see them again soon.

The Tiger Lillies - Usine C - October 20th 2011

Band : The Tiger Lillies
Venue : Usine C
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 20th 2011
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : After a 3-year absence, the Tiger Lillies returned to their favourite Montreal venue, Usine C. We decided to go to both evenings. Tonight's show started really up-tempo with "Heroin & Cocaine", but remained mostly quiet and dark through the rest. At the end of the second set, we were spoiled with classics like "Banging the Nails" and "Vagina". See you tomorrow!

Sunday, 9 October 2011

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra - Sala Rossa - October 9th 2011

Band : Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 9th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
BlindBlindBlind
13 Blues For Thirteen Moons
There Is A Light
God Bless Our Dead Marines
What We Loved Was Not Enough
Horses In The Sky
1,000,000 Died To Make This Sound

Comments : After last year's show in Quebec city we were not really sure when we would be able to see them again. It was a great surprise (not to say relief!) to see a few East coast shows scheduled along with ATP, including one in Montreal and at the Sala Rossa to boot! Efrim introduced tonight's concert as a memorial service to his recently deceased and dear friend Stephen Harper. His portrait was hanging upside down on stage (to let the blood flow to his huge feet, according to Efrim). Tonight's was the longest ASMZ show I have ever seen. It included one brand new song. Although I was a bit disappointed by the setlist (last year's was better), overall it was a great performance as usual.

Explosions In The Sky - Metropolis - October 6th 2011

Band : Explosions In The Sky
Venue : Metropolis
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 6th 2011
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Six Days At The Bottom Of The Ocean
Last Known Surroundings
Catastrophe And The Cure
The Only Moment We Were Alone
Postcard From 1952
Greet Death
Birth And Death Of The Day
The Moon Is Down
Let Me Back In

Comments : I was sceptical about the show, mainly due to the size of the venue and the fact that the new album did not really impress me. Despite my fears and a quiet moment halfway through, EITS gave a really great show, picking up once again where Mogwai has let us down a few years ago.

Tuesday, 4 October 2011

Laurie Anderson - Usine C - October 4th 2011

Band : Laurie Anderson
Venue : Usine C
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 4th 2011
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : We only heard about this show a few days beforehand, and we were lucky enough to get tickets for the first night. Billed as a "multimedia experience", I did not really know what to expect for my very first Laurie Anderson show (minus the controversial collaboration with Lou Reed and John Zorn last year). I really enjoyed tonight's performance, sometimes reminiscent of The Residents (see Randy's stories during the Talking Light tour). A very nice evening, I almost wished I had gotten tickets for one more show even though it would have been the exact same performance.

Saturday, 1 October 2011

Thisquietarmy - La Petite Boite Noire - October 1st 2011

Band : Thisquietarmy
Venue : La Petite Boite Noire
Town (country) : Sherbrooke QC (Canada)
Date : October 1st 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Tonight is actually the third time I get to see Eric playing outside of Montreal. Another nice show including his cover of New Dawn Fades at the end, despite an iffy sound (which did improve towards the end).

Thursday, 29 September 2011

Carla Bozulich & John Eichenseer - Casa Del Popolo - September 29th 2011

Band : Carla Bozulich & John Eichenseer
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 18th 2011
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : It is always great to see Carla Bozulich. Tonight she performed as a duo but the show also featured special guests from Montreal including Lisa gamble. Even with a more minimal set up the show did not lose any of its intensity, including both new songs and Evengelista classics. Great as usual.

Sunday, 25 September 2011

Peter Hook & The Light - Club Soda - September 25th 2011

Band : Peter Hook & The Light
Venue : Club Soda (Pop Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 25th 2011
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
No Love Lost
Leaders Of Men
Glass
Digital
Disorder
Day Of The Lords
Candidate
Insight
New dawn Fades
She's Lost Control
Shadowplay
Wilderness
Interzone
I Remember Nothing
Atmosphere
Warsaw
Failures
Transmission
Love Will Tear Us Apart
Dreams Never End
Ceremony

Comments : This is a show I have been waiting for quite a while. I have had nice feedbacks from a couple of friends who saw this in Europe and Unknown Pleasures is one of my all time favourite albums. I really liked the fact that Peter Hook does not try to be, act or sing like Ian Curtis. It would probably have been one of the top shows of the year if Peter Hook would have played the bass through the whole set (his son was playing the bass lines when Hook was singing). The highlight of my evening was when Hookie, standing right in front of me, started the bass line of Transmission. The Band seemed very happy to play and Peter Hook was overwhelmed by the reaction of the audience. They came back for one more unplanned encore. I hope to see them play Closer soon.

Arcade Fire - Place Des Festivals - September 22nd 2011

Band : Arcade Fire
Venue : Place Des Festivals (Pop Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 22th 2011
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
Ready To Start
Keep The Car Running
No Cars Go
Haiti
Empty Room
Speaking In Tongues
Modern Man
Intervention
Rococo
The Suburbs
Month Of May
Rebellion (Lies)
We Used To Wait
Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)
Power Out Outro
Wake Up
Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)

Comments : I was secretly wishing that it would rain today so I would have a legitimate excuse to miss the show (yes, I know I am evil). Don't get me wrong, an Arcade Fire free outdoor show sounded like a good idea (remember Place Longueuil last year?), but the whole carnival around it (the virtual doors opening at noon, the free yoga class, and 2 opening acts) made it sound way too pretentious this time. Anyways, we made it early enough to secure spots within the front section a few rows from the stage. Then, we practiced our deepest meditation techniques to make it through the opening acts (Karkwa was really painful). The Arcade Fire show was ok, very similar to the ones from last year, but I did not really feel any emotion watching them. I even got a bit bored after 30 minutes or so. The old tracks regained my interest though. I am not entirely sure I will go see them again even if they were playing another free show. Oh well...

Hannah Marcus - Casa Del Popolo - September 20th 2011

Band : Hannah Marcus
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 20th 2011
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I had never heard of Hanna Marcus but the guest musicians made tonight's show sound amazing. It almost turned out to be Hanna Marcus & Silver Mt. Zion (as only Sophie was missing). Anyways, I was not really convinced by Hanna Marcus performance (including the 5+ minutes of guitar tuning just so she can hit the cords with a blender) but the guests in attendance really made it something special and worth seeing.

Radwan Ghazi Moumneh / Jessica Moss - Casa Del Popolo - September 20th 2011

Band : Radwan Ghazi Moumneh / Jessica Moss
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 20th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I had missed their first collaboration a few months back, so this was definitely a show I wanted to see. Radwan and Jessica played a short set (20 minutes or so) of 2 songs. The first one was perhaps too quiet. We could hear the DJ music next door through the wall and that was a bit distracting. The second one was really amazing. I really hope they will keep on collaborating together.

Les Beyond - Peut-Être Friperie - September 18th 2011

Band : Les Beyond
Venue : Peut-Être Friperie
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 18th 2011
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Tonight is Les Beyond's last show in town as Erin is leaving on Friday. The unusual venue (the back of a friperie) made it quite special as well. Julie Matson joined her at the end of her set for 2 songs, including an amazing cover of "Dancing On my Own". Very moving. This is it, the end. I will deeply miss your shows Erin...

Thursday, 15 September 2011

Dora Bleu - Piranha Bar - September 15th 2011

Band : Dora Bleu
Venue : Piranha Bar (UnPop Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 15th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I was not particularly thrilled to go back to see a show at the Piranha Bar. Just like the last time, the show started way too late (I literally had to run out at the very last second of the set to catch my bus) and the sound was so-so (well, what can one expect when the stage is in front of a large window ?). Anyways, despite the odd setting (Dorothy and Etienne playing on stage and Lisa Gamble on the floor) and the annoying disco laser lights, this was a pretty interesting collaboration.

Monday, 12 September 2011

Kid Congo Powers & The Pink Monkey Birds - Casa Del Popolo - September 12th 2011

Band : Kid Congo Powers & The Pink Monkey Birds
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 12th 2011
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : It has been a while since we last saw Kid Congo Powers opening for Nick Cave. Every time I tried to see them since, the show would get cancelled (due to visas issues in Montreal, snow in France). The curse has been lifted (at least for me) now and I finally got to see them play again. A nice set with songs from both albums, including the "usual" cover of "Sexbeat" with the added cover of "I'm Cramped" this time.:

Whilst Vs. Gmackrr - Monastiraki - September 11th 2011

Band : Whilst Vs. Gmackrr
Venue : Monastiraki
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 11th 2011
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : It has been way too long since I last saw Whilst. Today they played a collaboration set with Gmackrrr in the odd setting of an art space/curiosity shop. The result was quite excellent as the sounds of the 3 musicians blended perfectly and really fit the window display of stuffed birds on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
