Godspeed You ! Black Emperor - Espace Julien - January 28th 2011

Band : Godspeed You ! Black Emperor
Venue : Espace Julien
Town (country) : Marseille (France)
Date : January 28th 2011
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
Gorecki (Moya)
Albanian
Monheim
World Police And Friendly Fire
John Hughes (She Dreamt She Was A Bulldozer, She Dreamt She Was Alone In An Empty Field)
Tazer Floyd (Rockets Fall On Rocket Falls)
Dead Metheny
BBF III

Comments : Well, seeing that one of my favourite bands is touring France while I am there (perfect timing, isn't it?), the least I could do is drive to Marseille. It was very nice to see them in a more human-sized venue despite the fact that it was overcrowded and the security extremely unfriendly. Tonight confirmed my previous impressions of the Paris show, and I actually am enjoying this tour more than the 2003 one. Gladly there will be more shows to come in the next months...

Agathe Max - Librairie Grand Guignol - January 26th 2011

Band : Agathe Max
Venue : Librairie Grand Guignol
Town (country) : Lyon (France)
Date : January 26th 2011
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Comments : The independent book store Grand Guignol is closing at the end of the month, while the city of Lyon is applying to become the European capital of culture once again. Tonight was one of my last chances to visit the store and to see a show in their great cellar. I don't recall having ever seen Agathe Max in concert before, although I really enjoy her violin drones. A very nice set divided in 3 main parts; the second one was truly fantastic and captivating.

Black Packers - Grrrnd Zero Gerland - January 18th 2011

Band : Black Packers
Venue : Grrrnd Zero Gerland
Town (country) : Lyon (France)
Date : January 18th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I did not know much about John Hegre before tonight, but my friend and collaborator Stephen seemed quite impressed with me for seeing the show. Knowing his usual good taste in music, I knew this was going to be something worth seeing. The result was short, noisy (I would almost say brutal) and straight to the point. I don't think I would really enjoy listening to one of their records at home but it was definitely something good live.

Godspeed You ! Black Emperor - Grande Halle De La Villette - January 14th 2011

Band : Godspeed You ! Black Emperor
Venue : Grande Halle De La Villette
Town (country) : Paris (France)
Date : January 14th 2011
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
Hope Drone
Gathering Storm
Monheim
Albanian
World Police And Friendly Fire
Dead Metheny
Tazer Floyd (Rockets Fall On Rocket Falls)
BBF III

Comments : The reunion that got me most excited over the last year. Tonight is the very first show of the second half of the European tour (after the ATP/UK ones in December). The venue is probably not the best place to see the band (or any other band actually), being an old abattoir supposedly holding 4500 people. Gladly (and with a little help), we managed to get front row spots. The overall atmosphere is very different than the previous Godspeed shows I have seen. I would say less emotive due to the absence of Norsola on the cello, but the return of Mike Moya brings back something beautiful to the music and Karl Lemieux definitely makes something amazing with the visuals. No new songs as secretly announced by an inside source, but a great new version of "Albanian".

Chat Ours - Ninkasi - January 7th 2010

Band : Chat Ours
Venue : Ninkasi
Town (country) : Saint-Etienne France)
Date : January 7th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : People had finished their burgers (see my review of the Raymonde Howard show) by the time Chat Ours got on stage. Most of the remaining audience were either drunk or there for the show, so the band received a nice response, including one from a severely intoxicated bar patron who asked them to wish happy birthday to one of the waitresses. Gladly the band members do not take themselves seriously and seemed happy to oblige.

Raymonde Howard - Ninkasi - January 7th 2011

Band : Raymonde Howard
Venue : Ninkasi
Town (country) : Saint-Etienne France)
Date : January 7th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : This year starts exactly where we left 2010, although it might be my last Raymonde Howard show for quite a while. The Ninkasi St Etienne is definitely as infamous as its Lyon alter-ego. I mean, what is the point of having a band play when people who came to eat are seated right in front of the stage and people who came to see the show are standing in the back of the room ? A nice show despite the non-stop chattering, including one cover of a song by Original Haircut with both Laetitia and Fab singing.
