Godspeed You ! Black Emperor - Théâtre Corona - April 29th 2011

Band : Godspeed You ! Black Emperor
Venue : Théâtre Corona
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : April 29th 2011
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
Dead Metheny
Gathering Storm
Tazer Floyd (Rockets Fall On Rocket Falls)
Chart #3
World Police And Friendly Fire
Albanian
Gorecki (Moya)
BBF III

Comments : Last show at Corona. A quite "classic" set, but still extremely enjoyable. I was really happy to hear John Hugues again tonight. Too bad we have to switch to a bigger venue for the last 2 shows...

Martin Tétreault - Théâtre Corona - April 29th 2011

Band : Martin Tétreault
Venue : Théâtre Corona
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : April 29th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : The only opening act of this tour I was actually curious to see and the only one I really enjoyed. A nice avant-garde set (for those who are not familiar with Martin Teterault, the music is only made with turntables and records). Truly unique.

Godspeed You ! Black Emperor - Théâtre Corona - April 28th 2011

Band : Godspeed You ! Black Emperor
Venue : Théâtre Corona
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : April 28th 2011
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
Gorecki (Moya)
Albanian
Gathering Storm
12-28-99 (Outro)
Chart #3
World Police And Friendly Fire
John Hughes (She Dreamt She Was A Bulldozer, She Dreamt She Was Alone In An Empty Field)
Tazer Floyd (Rockets Fall On Rocket Falls)
Sad Mafioso (East Hastings)

Comments : Probably my favourite of the 3 shows at the Corona, even if I had abandoned my front row center spot for a higher position tonight. The audience was a bit too talkative during the quiet parts. A great set list, with a wonderful finale of John Hugues, Tazer Floyd, and Sad Mafioso.

Godspeed You ! Black Emperor - Théâtre Corona - April 27th 2011

Band : Godspeed You ! Black Emperor
Venue : Théâtre Corona
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : April 27th 2011
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
Gathering Storm
Monheim
Albanian
World Police And Friendly Fire
Dead Metheny
Gorecki (Moya)
BBF III

Comments : Back in Montreal. I was "lucky" enough (i.e. waiting in line since 8am the day tickets went on sale, if you consider this luck) to score tickets for the first 3 Montreal shows. After the amazing experience in la Pêche, I was pretty excited to see the band in the mysterious and supposedly small and beautiful venue. No real surprises in the set list tonight, but another great show.

Godspeed You ! Black Emperor - Centre Communautaire De Rupert - April 26th 2011

Band : Godspeed You ! Black Emperor
Venue : Centre Communautaire De Rupert
Town (country) : La Pêche, QC (Canada)
Date : April 26th 2011
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
Gathering Storm
Monheim
Albanian
The Cowboy
World Police And Friendly Fire
Gorecki (Moya)
The Sad Mafioso (East Hastings)

Comments : The best show of the tour for me and the best show of year so far. With a little insider help, we managed to get tickets for the community event played in front of about 200 lucky audience members. We got there early enough and secured front row spots. The low stage made us feel like the band was playing in our living room. According to the original setlist, the show was supposed to end with BBF III but was replaced by The Sad Mafioso. A memorable evening !

Mogwai - Olympia - April 25th 2011

Band : Mogwai
Venue : Olympia
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : April 25th 2011
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
White Noise
Friend Of The Night
How To Be A Werewolf
Rano Pano
Death Rays
I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead
San Pedro
Ithaca 27ø9
Mexican Grand Prix
New Paths To Helicon, Pt 1
You're Lionel Richie
We're No Here
Auto Rock
George Square Thatcher Death Party
Glasgow Mega-Snake

Comments : At first, seeing Mogwai the same week as Godspeed sounded like a fantastic plan. In reality, it was not the brightest idea and the fact that Martin Bulloch did not play on the North-American tour did not help. Not a bad show per se, but I found the setlist weak and disappointing, as well as the band lacking emotion on stage. The barriers between the stage and the audience with security guards taking their jobs a bit too seriously also hampered my spirits. Oh, well.

Godspeed You ! Black Emperor - Lee's Palace - April 24th 2011

Band : Godspeed You ! Black Emperor
Venue : Lee's Palace
Town (country) : Toronto, ON (Canada)
Date : April 24nd 2011 (8pm)
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
JLH Outro
Gorecki (Moya)
Albanian
Monheim
Chart #3
World Police and Friendly Fire
The Cowboy
Gathering Storm
The Sad Mafioso (East Hastings)

Comments : After a short break, we came back to our same spot (stools on a slightly elevated level right in front of the pit). The evening performance was quite similar to the afternoon one (with the exception of Monheim replacing Dead Metheny), but started with an amazing surprise of JLH Outro, instead of the usual improvised intro. This time, I did not mind the similarities at all and I had a fantastic time at the show again.

Godspeed You ! Black Emperor - Lee's Palace - April 24th 2011

Band : Godspeed You ! Black Emperor
Venue : Lee's Palace
Town (country) : Toronto, ON (Canada)
Date : April 24nd 2011 (2pm)
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
Gorecki (Moya)
Albanian
Dead Metheny
Chart #3
World Police and Friendly Fire
The Cowboy
Gathering Storm
The Sad Mafioso (East Hastings)

Comments : The pinnacle of the marathon : two shows in one day, although I was not particularly looking forward to the all-ages afternoon show. As someone who grew up in Europe, I did not have to deal with age restrictions at all, so go figure... Anyways, the absence of alcohol saved us from obnoxious, heavily intoxicated audience and I noticed a great general atmosphere within the venue (or at least from where I was standing). Best of all, the band played the other songs I was looking forward to hear again all these years : The Cowboy and Sad Mafioso. A very nice show, probably my favourite so far.

Godspeed You ! Black Emperor - Lee's Palace - April 23rd 2011

Band : Godspeed You ! Black Emperor
Venue : Lee's Palace
Town (country) : Toronto, ON (Canada)
Date : April 23rd 2011
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
Gathering Storm
Monheim
Albanian
Chart #3
World Police And Friendly Fire
Dead Metheny
Gorecki (Moya)
BBF III

Comments : I have to say I was a tiny bit disappointed with tonight's show. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed tonight's concert probably more than most of the shows I have seen this year, but the set list was way too similar to last night’s and there are still a lot of songs that I would like to hear live.

Godspeed You ! Black Emperor - Lee's Palace - April 22nd 2011

Band : Godspeed You ! Black Emperor
Venue : Lee's Palace
Town (country) : Toronto, ON (Canada)
Date : April 22nd 2011
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
Gathering Storm
Monheim
Albanian
Chart #3
World Police And Friendly Fire
Dead Metheny
Tazer Floyd (Rockets Fall On Rocket Falls)
BBF III

Comments : After a little taste of the reunion in Europe, I was getting ready for my big GY!BE marathon : 10 shows in 2 weeks. Although I don't really enjoy going to Toronto to see shows, the idea of seeing the band in a small venue was something I was looking forward to. This first night was usual fare based on the two shows I have seen on this tour. No big surprises but still a pretty good set despite some heavily intoxicated, noisy audience members.

Eric Chenaux - Lee's Palace - April 22nd 2011

Band : Eric Chenaux
Venue : Lee's Palace
Town (country) : Toronto, ON (Canada)
Date : April 22nd 2011
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Unlike the previous tours, the openers of Godspeed hold little interest for me this year. Although it is always nice to discover new Constellation bands. Sadly and once again, Eric Chenaux's set left me quite uninspired and so it seemed for most of the audience who kept talking throughout the whole show.

The Black Angels - Sala Rossa - April 12th 2011

Band : The Black Angels
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : April 12th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
Bloodhounds On My Trail
The Sniper At The Gates Of Heaven
The Sniper
Haunting At 1300 McKinley
Yellow Elevator #2
Black Grease
Science Killer
Bad Vibrations
The Prodigal Sun
Young Men Dead
Entrance Song
You On The Run
Telephone
?
?
?

Comments : Following their great February show in Feyzin, I had high expectations of this show, especially considering the more welcoming venue. Sadly, I found the show slightly less intense and the setlist less interesting, albeit better than the last gig in Montreal. The encore again featured Rishi Dhir on the citar, no big surpise if you were at La Tulipe last time. Oh well.

Acid Mothers Temple - Il Motore - April 9th 2011

Band : Acid Mothers Temple
Venue : Il Motore
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : April 9th 2011
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I have truly enjoyed every single Acid Mothers Temple show I have ever seen. Tonight's was no exception, despite having to travel all the way to Il Motore. A great show as expected. I really hope they keep the routine of playing once a year in Montreal.

Wire - Cabaret Du Mile End - April 2nd 2011

Band : Wire
Venue : Cabaret Du Mile End
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : April 2nd 2011
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Back in 2004, the Nuits Sonores festival had the bright idea to overlap the Wire show with FM Einheit's, so we only managed to catch 20 minutes or so of their set. It took us this long to see them again, but it was worth the wait. A great show and a really good setlist including old classics. I did have to fight off (another) drunk and sweaty hipster, who spent the evening screaming and trying to push his way to the front row (which obviously failed).
