Thisquietarmy - 4299 De L'esplanade - June 30th 2011

Band : Thisquietarmy
Venue : 4299 De L'esplanade
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 30th 2011
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Another show booked at the very last minute. Tonight, the tenants of a house slated to be demolished are throwing a farewell party in its honour, before moving out tomorrow. Visual artists and musicians are performing throughout the 3 empty floors. Thisquietarmy played a very ambient set in a small room in front of six people. A great set and a truly fantastic experience indeed !

Elizabeth Anka Vajagic - 110 Van Horne - June 18th 2011

Band : Elizabeth Anka Vajagic
Venue : 110 Van Horne
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 18th 2011
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : A free evening of music and video projections in the parking lot of Constellation Records. As Elizabeth has not played a live show for over a year, this was definitely not to be missed. I really enjoyed her short set (2 songs, about 15 minutes) a lot. I hope to see her again in the near future and also hope to have another of these evenings in the Summer.

Hangedup - Sala Rossa - June 17th 2011

Band : Hangedup
Venue : Sala Rossa (Suoni Per Il Popolo)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 17th 2011
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
? (new song)
Kang Klang
Kinetic Work
Billy Bang
Mecca Normal
Junk The Clatter

Comments : After their last show in November, I was hoping but not really expecting to see them again for another 7 years, so I was quite happy. Tonight they opened for Colin Stetson at a sold out Sala. The set started with a new (!!) song and included a song where Gen sang, among other suprises. Another really good show, tighter but shorter than last time. I want more.

Jerusalem In My Heart - Sala Rossa - June 15th 2011

Band : Jerusalem In My Heart
Venue : Sala Rossa (Suoni Per Il Popolo)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 15th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Free show during the Suoni, no one really knew what to expect as each Jerusalem In My Heart concerts is different. Tonight, Radwan, accompanied by a keyboard player, sang and played the oud on a side stage while a group of people were miming a musical performance on the main stage. The 16-minute concert was also accompanied by reel projections on both stages. Short and enjoyable and a rare occasion to see Radwan without his famous glasses.

Keiji Haino - Sala Rossa - June 10th 2011

Band : Keij Haino
Venue : Sala Rossa (Suoni Per Il Popolo)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 10th 2011
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : A very nice show: impressive, intense, extreme, loud and yet relaxing. Keiji Haino started with the guitar and alternated tracks using microphones and electronics. He closed his 1h40 minutes show by blowing the fuses on the wall of Fender amps on stage. Definitely not overrated! Sadly I was starting to get a bit physically tired towards the end due to the 1 hour delay in the evening.

Esprits Frappeurs - Sala Rossa - June 10th 2011

Band : Esprits Frappeurs
Venue : Sala Rossa (Suoni Per Il Popolo)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 10th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I didn't know much about this band except for the band members and a few videos found on the net. The line up including Alexandre St-Onge and live projections by Karl Lemieux, I knew I should expect something interesting. The perfect opening act for Keiji Haino indeed, with special mention for the costumes.

Shalabi Effect - Sala Rossa - June 8th 2011

Band : Shalabi Effect
Venue : Sala Rossa (Suoni Per Il Popolo)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 8th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I have not seen the entire Shalabi Effect outfit live for a really long time, so it was definitely a show I was looking forward to. Well, tonight the 4 members were present as well as 2 guests (Josh Zubot and Jason Sharp), accompanied by live projections by Karl Lemieux. The result was more "free" than expected but still enjoyable, albeit rather short (40 minutes or so).

Esmerine - Ukrainian Federation - June 4th 2011

Band : Esmerine
Venue : Ukrainian Federation
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 4th 2011
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : My first Esmerine show was spoiled by the audience. Tonight's was spoiled by the guests. The show started really well but as it progressed and more guests came on stage, my interest started to wane despite the very nice projections. I really enjoyed the old songs though, and it was nice to see Bruce playing outside the Godspeed environment.

Siskiyou - Ukrainian Federation - June 4th 2011

Band : Siskiyou
Venue : Ukrainian Federation
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 4th 2011
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Another new band on Constellation and sadly another one that did not really impress me. Their show included a cover of Simon & Garfunkel's song "El Condor Pasa".

Brendan Perry - Le National - June 3rd 2011

Band : Brendan Perry
Venue : Le National
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 3rd 2011
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
Tree Of Life
In Power We Entrust
Love On The Vine
The Carnival Is Over
Golden Rule
Eros And Psyche
Passage In Time
Icarus
Song To The Siren
This Boy
Wintersun
Utopia
Severance
Spirit Of Eden

Comments : This double bill would have probably made me crazy with excitement 10-15 years ago, but thinking back to the last time I saw Brendan Perry, I actually don't recall much. The setlist gladly included quite a few Dead Can Dance songs and Robin Guthrie joined Brendan Perry on stage for "Song To The Siren". I did not listen to the new album at all before tonight and did not enjoy the new songs at all.

Robin Guthrie - Le National - June 3rd 2011

Band : Robn Guthrie
Venue : Le National
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 3rd 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : After his show at ATP, I was quite happy to see Robin Guthrie again. Tonight sounded pretty much like the set he played at ATP but with the addition of a bass player and drummer. The drummer was quite annoying to watch and didn't really add anything interesting to the music. The show was a bit disappointing, seeing as the video projections were also the exact same DVD as last time.
