The Flaming Lips - Osheaga - July 31st 2011

Band : The Flaming Lips
Venue : Parc Jean Drapeau (Osheaga)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 31st 2011
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Race For The Prize
A Spoonful Weighs A Ton
The Spark That Bled
Slow Motion
What Is the Light?
The Observer
Waitin' For A Superman
Suddenly Everything Has Changed
The Gash
Feeling Yourself Disintegrate
Sleeping On The Roof
The Spiderbite Song
Do You Realize??

Comments : Following my first encounter with them at ATP, I have to confess the music of The Flaming Lips grew on me quite a lot. I really like their album The Soft Bulletin and I was pretty happy to be able to hear the album played in its entirety (minus Buggin'). Mind you, I would have traded it for Dark Side Of The Moon with no regrets. The visual effects were quite similar to the ATP show but worked perfectly in an open air festival setting. The audience was quite into it and quite respectful of one another (except for the 2 morons crowd surfing). A very enjoyable show including an impromptu wedding ceremony on stage and one encore. On the way back the whole crowd at Berry-UQAM metro station was still singing "Do You Realize?". Impressive.

Cypress Hill - Osheaga - July 31st 2011

Band : Cypress Hill
Venue : Parc Jean Drapeau (Osheaga)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 31st 2011
Grade : 1/5

Setlist :
Shoot 'Em Up
When the Shit Goes Down
How I Could Just Kill A Man
Latin Lingo
Armada Latina
Insane In The Brain
Hits From The Bong
Dr. Greenthumb
Rise Up
Rock Superstar

Comments : I arrived late but it looked like the band also started late, so I guess I did not miss much. The field was already packed and I was not able to get a nice spot for the show. No big deal as, after last year's Snoop Doggy Dog's painfull experience, I now know for sure that I really dislike rap shows. It was fun to hear "Dr Greenthumb" though, but I was bored for most of the show. Sorry.

The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart - Osheaga - July 31st 2011

Band : The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart
Venue : Parc Jean Drapeau (Osheaga)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 31st 2011
Grade : 1/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I did not really know this band before, but I read great reviews about them where they were compared to Ride or My Bloody Valentine, so this caught my curiosity. Well, it looks like I fell into another lazy journalist trap, as I did not find any ressemblance at all and the generic pop played by the band did not really catch my interest. I ended up leaving after about half of the show. Disappointing.

Disappears - Casa Del Popolo - July 23rd 2011

Band : Disappears
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 23rd 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
Halo
Hibernation Sick
Pre-Language
All Gone White
Marigold
Lux
Replicate
Fear Of Darkness
Love Drug
Radiation
Brother Joliene
Revisiting

Comments : It was already getting quite late when Disappears got on stage. The venue was much less packed than the Sonic show a few months ago (maybe the presence of Steve Shelley had been less promoted?) it was definitely more comfortable for the audience, but I was much less impressed this time. It was still good, but I did not really get into their set. Oh well...

The Psychic Paramount - Casa Del Popolo - July 23rd 2011

Band : The Psychic Paramount
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 23rd 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I really love this band. It is always a thrill to find out that they have a new album and that they are on tour. It has been almost 10 years since the first time I saw them and they still put on a really great live show. Tonight was no exception and was much more intense than the last time I saw them here in Montreal. Really enjoyable !

Aim Low - Casa Del Popolo - July 23rd 2011

Band : Aim Low
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 23rd 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
Coptic Christmas
Phantom Cat
Just Blink, You're Not Missing Anything
Duodenum

Comments : After their very nice show at Le Cagibi, I was quite happy to see them added to the double bill. They seemed less comfortable on stage and therefore sounded less intense than the last time, but the show was still good, as expected.

Squalor - Casa Del Popolo - July 16th 2011

Band : Squalor
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 16th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I have not seen Squalor in a while. They seem to have gone even further in the direction they were taking last time I saw them. Although they still sound pretty metal to me, the electronics are pushed up front and Reuel is also playing the trombone (!) as well as the guitar. Most of the songs still sounded familiar, but played in a very different way. Tonight's performance was accompanied by live video projections by Fluffy.

Rei Rea - Casa Del Popolo - July 16th 2011

Band : Rei Rea
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 16th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Another Rei Rea concert and as expected, very different from any previous show I have seen. Christian played a short and harsh solo set, almost flirting with power electronics with the use of vocals. Very enjoyable as usual.

The Dirtbombs - Sala Rossa - July 14th 2011

Band : The Dirtbombs
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 14th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : The Dirtbombs are definitely a great band to see live, so I was a bit surprised that the turnout was low. (Mind you, we still got the smoker, and the drunk and sweaty guy trying to push his way to the front). I was not really convinced by the first half of the show which was mostly instrumental, but the rest made up for it. A nice show which started too late (I don't think 2 openers were really necessary), a bit weaker than my previous experiences with the band.

Moon Pool & Dead Band - Sala Rossa - July 14th 2011

Band : Moon Pool & Dead Band
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 14th 2011
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I did not know anything about the opening band - actually, I did not even know that there were 2 opening bands until arriving at the venue - but I got excited when I was told that Nate Young was part of the project. Sadly, the result was very far from Wolf Eyes. I wouldn't have minded the vintage synth sounds but the drum machine didn't do it for me at all, sorry.

Aim Low - Le Cagibi - July 7th 2011

Band : Aim Low
Venue : Le Cagibi
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 7th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
A Decreasing Amount Of Effort
Phantom Cat
Coptic Christmas
Duodenum
Just Blink, You're Not Missing Anything

Comments : A new local band I have been wanting to check live for quite a long time. I am glad I did : a pretty good show and probably the loudest one I have ever seen at Cagibi.

Les Beyond - Le Cagibi - July 7th 2011

Band : Les Beyond
Venue : Le Cagibi
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 7th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : It had been quite a while since I had seen Erin play. Tonight she played a pretty nice and short set, although the sound volume was a bit too low to fully let oneself get into the drones.

The B-52's - Scène TD - July 4th 2011

Band : The B-52's
Venue : Scène TD (Festival International De Jazz De Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 4th 2011
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : After the Marianne Faithfull show, we decided to check them out despite the enormous crowd and the heat wave. The show started with mostly new songs that all sounded pretty much the same to me. Fun to watch for about 15 minutes, but definitely not something I would go to see again.

Marianne Faithfull - Théâtre Maisonneuve - July 4th 2011

Band : Marianne Faithfull
Venue : Théâtre Maisonneuve (Festival International De Jazz De Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 4th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
Horses and High Heels
Why Did We Have To Part
The Stations
There Is A Ghost
The Crane Wife 3
Prussian Blue
Back In Baby's Arms
Goin' Back
Love Song
Sister Morphine
Sing Me Back Home
Broken English
As Tears Go By
Working Class Hero
Incarceration Of A Flower Child
The Ballad Of Lucy Jordan
Strange Weather

Comments : This is the 3rd time I see Marianne Faithfull and tonight was definitely the least good. It started very (too ?) quietly and I did not really enjoy the band playing with her. The guitar player was mixed way too high and offered us quite a few unnecessary solos. Gladly, it picked up after a while when she switched from songs written by Laurent Voulzy (yuk!) to Nick Cave, Roger Waters as well as her old classics. Marianne looked and sometimes sounded tired because of thrombosis in her leg. The show ended quite nicely though with Strange Weather by Tom Waits.
