Martin Tétreault Et Son Quatuor De Tourne-disques - Musée D'art Contemporain - November 30th 2011

Band : Martin Tétreault Et Son Quatuor De Tourne-disques
Venue : Musée D'art Contemporain - Salle Beverly Webster Rolph
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 30th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

Comments : Undoubtedly the best opening act of the Godspeed shows I have seen this year, I decided to give him another try. Add to the fact that it was a free show and the last one of the Triennale, it was not to be missed. Tonight, Martin Tétreault did not really "play", but conducted a quartet of turntables. The result was as interesting as expected (the first track was actually amazing). I was a bit disappointed that Martin did not take part in the quartet and I also found the performance a tad too long. Unsurprisingly, the turnout for a true "avant garde" show was much lower than my two previous experiences at this series.

Hangedup - Sala Rossa - November 21st 2011

Band : Hangedup
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 21st 2011
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I was so glad to see Hangedup once again. Tonight's concert featured video projections by Kenneth Thomas which worked nicely with the music. The set was played in one bloc with no break between the songs and included a lot of new material (can we hope for a new release soon ?). A really great and unique event.

Cloudscapes - Le Cagibi - November 11th 2011

Band : Cloudscapes
Venue : Le Cagibi
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 11th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : It started with what could have been an alternative soundtrack to Blade Runner and quickly evolved into 6 (?) different parts. A less seamless set than usual, where each part sounded like a short song. Also a much "darker" set than usual. Interesting.

Rei Rea - Le Cagibi - November 11th 2011

Band : Rei Rea
Venue : Le Cagibi
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 11th 2011
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Probably one of my favourite Rei Rea shows to date. Christian used both a harmonica and an old string instrument to play an ambient and organic set. Extremely enjoyable. I know Christian plays the same set using the same gear only once, but I really hope he does something in this vein once again in the future.

Tim Hecker - Musée D'art Contemporain - November 9th 2011

Band : Tim Hecker
Venue : Musée D'art Contemporain - Salle Beverly Webster Rolph
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 9th 2011
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I don't really get the concept of playing in complete darkness. I mean, the whole idea is to see the performer playing live, isn't it ? Anyways, for seating, the museum gave us a choice between a stool and a yoga mat. I went for the second option. We entered a darkened room filled with smoke and we found a spot right in front of Tim Hecker. The show (or should I say the music?) was pretty much the same as my previous experiences, but I did not find his set interesting enough to make up for the lack of visual activity. I noticed a faster rhythm in the set. As soon as I would start to let myself drown in a particular sound scape, a different one would appear. Hmmm.

k.a.n.t n.a.g.a.n.o - Casa Del Popolo - November 6th 2011

Band : k.a.n.t n.a.g.a.n.o
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 6th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Tonight's show started much harsher and more dissonant than usual, but the sounds became more familiar throughout the show. Mind you, dissonant does not mean less interesting here, so I had a pretty great time as usual.

Esprits Frappeurs - Casa Del Popolo - November 6th 2011

Band : Esprits Frappeurs
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 6th 2011
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : A very different set-up than last time, as the movie projectors were facing the audience tonight and seemed to create more of an atmosphere than simple film projections. The show started really great but the power went out about 10 minutes into the set. The trio started again, but it took a little longer to get back into it again. Still very interesting though.

Karl Lemieux / Jonathan Parant / David Bryant / Kevin Doria - Musée D'art Contemporain - November 2nd 2011

Band : Karl Lemieux / Jonathan Parant / David Bryant / Kevin Doria
Venue : Musée D'art Contemporain - Salle Beverly Webster Rolph
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 2nd 2011
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : A free show part of the Triennale at the Museum, but you have to get (free) tickets in advance to get in. Luckily one of our friends managed to get us a couple. A really great set in a very comfortable environment, probably the best soundtrack to Karl's video manipulations I have seen. A very nice 35 minutes journey, and also the first time I saw Karl using colour films.
