Sam Shalabi's Land Of Kush - Sala Rossa - June 27th 2012

Band : Sam Shalabi's Land Of Kush
Venue : Sala Rossa
City (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 27th 2012
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

Comments : I was looking forward to see Land Of Kush again. Tonight's line-up was smaller than last time. It featured 15 musicians (including all members of Shalabi Effect) and 4 guest singers on stage, and I was quite happy to see that Elizabeth Anka Vajagic was one of them. The show included only new track. It started a bit too quiet for me (I could have gone without the Jason Sharp solo) but quickly picked up to some really great and trippy sounds. Although the set was a bit shorter than last time with no encores, it was really nice to come home from a weekday show early.

Mogwai - Metropolis - June 17th 2012

Band : Mogwai
Venue : Metropolis
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 17th 2012
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Yes! I Am A Long Way From Home
I'm Jim Morrison, I'm Dead
Travel Is Dangerous
White Noise
Stop Coming To My House
I Know You Are But What Am I?
May Nothing But Happiness Come Through Your Door
How To Be A Werewolf
Mexican Grand Prix
2 Rights Make 1 Wrong
Hunted by A Freak
Mogwai Fear Satan

Comments : After last year's disappointing show, I was slightly less excited about tonight. Looking at the rather "low" attendance (about 900 tickets sold in a venue that holds up to 2300 people), it seemed I was not the only one. Gladly, the band proved they can still give really good performances, and tonight was probably the best one I have seen since ATP. The band seemed much more into it than last time. It was also very nice to get a pretty good light show instead of the useless video projections of the last tour. A much more dynamic set-list (despite the obvious faux-pas of playing Mexican Grand Prix) with many more old tracks and a great version of Mogwai Fear Satan to finish the concert.

Stephen O'Malley & Tim Hecker - Église St-James United - June 2nd 2012

Band : Stephen O'Malley & Tim Hecker
Venue : Eglise St-James United (Mutek)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 2nd 2012
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

Comments : This was probably the show I was looking forward to the most since the beginning of the year and I was really expecting something amazing. Sadly, the result did not live up to its potential. I found the first part of the show really self-indulgent; each musician playing on his own instead of together. The middle part was pretty good and I found a real complementarity between the two musicians. The final part, Stephen O'Malley got the bright idea to turn up each one of his eight (yes, eight) amps. Being in a church, the sound of the church organ did not stand a chance against these. At this point, it would not have made a big difference sound-wise if Tim Hecker had been doing a crossword puzzle instead of playing. The site-specific performance failed miserably here. It also failed visually with the lights turned down very low. At one point Stephen O'Malley had to use a flashlight to change something on his effect pedals. Don't get me wrong, it was not altogether a bad show, but still extremely disappointing.
