Comments : It was a great surprise to see a Ryoji Ikeda live performance of Test Pattern along with his current exhibition in Montreal. Tickets were a bit on the pricy side but I have always enjoyed concerts in non-traditional places: art galleries and museums are always the most comfortable ones. When we entered the room, I was a bit disappointed to see a regular size screen for the projections. I was expecting something similar to Alva Noto earlier this year. However, once the show started, I quickly forgot about the size of the screen. The show started at the precise scheduled time, a rare occurrence in Montreal. The beginning was quite abstract, as expected, with deconstructed frequencies and linear black and white projections. As the show progressed, the frequencies became less abstract (or perhaps I was simply getting used to it?). The show lasted just under one hour and time went really fast. A very intense, extreme and interesting evening indeed.
