Cloudscapes - Galerie Nota Bene - February 25th 2012

Band : Cloudscapes
Venue : Galerie Nota Bene (Nuit Blanche)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : February 25th 2012
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : While talking to Etienne before the show, he confessed that he had not rehearsed for his set. With that in mind, I found his performance really impressive despite the usual Nuit Blanche "tourists" who spent the whole set talking. A short, nice, interesting and seamless set.

Shearwater - Il Motore - February 22nd 2012

Band : Shearwater
Venue : Il Motore
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : February 22nd 2012
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I have to confess, before tonight the only thing I knew about Shearwater was the fact that Thor from the Swans plays in the band. Given as they were the opening act I decided to check them out. Sadly, Thor does not play on this tour. However I still enjoyed the show for what it was. Apparently they played mostly songs from their new record, but seeing as this was the first time I ever heard them, it didn’t really make a difference to me.

Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra - La Tulipe - February 19th 2012

Band : Thee Silver Mt. Zion Memorial Orchestra
Venue : La Tulipe
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : February 19th 2012
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
13 Blues For Thirteen Moons
There Is a Light
What We Loved Was Not Enough
Black Water Blowed / Engine Broke Blues
Take Away These Early Grave Blues
Psalms 99
Blind Blind Blind
Horses In The Sky

Comments : I have to admit I was a bit disappointed to see this show booked at La Tulipe after seeing the band at the Ukrainian and Sala. I managed to secure my front row dead center spot, and I enjoyed tonight's concert more than the last one. The sound was really good from where I was standing and I was happy to hear three new songs. No big surprise in the setlist which was quite similar to what they played throughout this tour, but I think it worked better than last time. A pretty nice evening.

Steve Bates - La Tulipe - February 19th 2012

Band : Steve Bates
Venue : La Tulipe
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : February 19th 2012
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I did not know anything about Steve Bates before tonight and it turned out to be a nice suprise. Probably the best opener for ASMZ I have seen in years. Nicely done guitar loops, which reminded me a bit of Gate. I really got into it at some point, so I am definitely going to check his records.

Whilst - Le Cagibi - February 3rd 2012

Band : Whilst
Venue : Le Cagibi
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : February 3rd 2012
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : A much more avant-garde set than usual, with Michel reading, screaming, banging on one of his pedals (intentionally or not ?) and playing with a loose wire throughout the set. Pretty abstract visuals in the background (I thought they looked like they were taken from a highly defective VHS tape) and weird electronic manipulations by Fluffy. As usual, each set is truly unique, too bad they don't play more often.

Termina - Le Cagibi - February 3rd 2012

Band : Termina
Venue : Le Cagibi
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : February 3rd 2012
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : My very first show of the year; sad but true. Let's hope the number of interesting bands playing in Montreal will increase shortly. Anyways, a short but nice set to start the year. Matthew has only been playing live for a short time and recently changed his name from Slug Bait to Termina. A very interesting sound, reminiscent of old-school industrial music, and I liked it.
