A Place To Bury Strangers - Société Des Arts Technologiques - March 31st 2012

Band : A Place To Bury Strangers
Venue : Société Des Arts Technologiques
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : March 31st 2012
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

Comments : Despite the disappointing show last time, I decided to go give APTBS another try as I really enjoy their records. I had no big expectations this time and seeing as they were opening for The Joy Formidable (in whom I have absolutely no interest), I thought it would at least make for an early night. I was wrong. Life is still full of surprises, even when you’ve been going to live concerts for over 20 years. The promoter had the bright idea of adding a second opening band at the last minute. APTBS only got on stage 2 hours after the doors opened. Although tonight's show was far from the fantastic first time I saw them opening for Shellac, I had a pretty good time. They played very little old stuff and there were no new line-up changes. It is also a good thing they play very loud. This covered up the really poor acoustics of the venue. The only question that remains to me is why APTBS never headlined a show in Montreal ?

Hangedup - Casa Del Popolo - March 27th 2012

Band : Hangedup
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : March 27th 2012
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Loop
Sink
Billy Bang
Skree
Radwan
? (new song)
Propane

Comments : Due to it being a work week night added to a chronic lack of sleep, I was a bit disappointed to hear that Hangedup would play after Jason Sharp (in whom I had no real interest). Anyways, I am glad and grateful I got to see them once again. Tonight's set started where the last one left us (mostly new songs), but was longer. Tonight also sounded more experimental than what we’ve been used to. I particularly enjoyed the one where Eric put some kind of old metal gear over his drum kit which sounded pretty industrial to me. Hopefully, this show is a harbinger for more shows and the possibility of a new album (?).

Radwan Ghazi Moumneh - Casa Del Popolo - March 27th 2012

Band : Radwan Ghazi Moumneh
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : March 27th 2012
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : It was already quite late for a Tuesday night when Radwan started his set. As usual, it was short, surprising and very interesting. Tonight he played some bouzouki riffs and chanted over some amazing drones. A really great set to start a long evening.

Thisquietarmy - Casa Del Popolo - March 25th 2012

Band : Thisquietarmy
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : March 25th 2012
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Eric is getting ready for his third European tour so we were lucky to catch him here before he leaves. Maybe not his most seamless show, but definitely the loudest I have seen. I was happy to hear an instrumental version of Gone To The Unseen among other personal favourites. A nice evening as usual.

Julie Doiron - Sala Rossa - March 16th 2012

Band : Julie Doiron
Venue : Sala Rossa (Under The Snow)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : March 16th 2012
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I was extremely excited to hear that Julie Doiron would be performing the album "Loneliest In The Morning" in its entirety tonight, as it is definitely my favourite record of hers. I was much less excited when I arrived at the venue and found out that there will be 2 opening acts. Both sounded pretty unappealing to me, especially the first one. It was almost 11:30pm and I was half asleep when Julie got on stage. Gladly she gave an amazing and very intimate performance. The whole thing looked really spontaneous. She played the songs in the same order as on the record, including some she had not played since releasing the album. She threw in some old and new extra tracks, including an obscure Eric's Trip b-side. A very enjoyable set, too bad it started way too late.

Dora Bleu - Playhouse - March 6th 2012

Band : Dora Bleu
Venue : Playhouse
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : March 6th 2012
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : There were several potentially dissuasive elements to tonight’s show : Tuesday night, two opening acts and venue (I highly recommend the bathrooms at the Playhouse). Nevertheless, the great line-up of the headline act was enough to make me go. I have great memories of my first Dora Bleu show with Alexandre St-Onge and I was really looking forward to see Sam Shalabi again. As expected, the show started way too late to accommodate a “corporate” day job. It’s is also a shame that on several occasions the music was drowned out by the obnoxious noise coming from the bar and the video poker machines. Happily, there were some really great moments (you definitely can't go wrong with the Shalabi / St-Onge combo) and I really enjoyed a lot the spoken word towards the end of the show.

David Kristian - Oboro - March 3rd 2012

Band : David Kristian
Venue : Oboro
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : March 3rd 2012
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : An exclusive invitation-only event, as part of the opening of a multimedia exhibition (thanks again Eric !). It has been almost 5 years since I last saw David Kristian and I was definitely looking forward to seeing him again. I was a bit scared when I realised the show was going to take place in the dark. However, what did not really work for Tim Hecker a few months ago, worked out perfectly tonight. David Kristian created a great tripping atmosphere in the room utilising sounds that reminded me of John Carpenter. A great performance !
