Sam Shalabi's Land Of Kush - Sala Rossa - October 29th 2012

Band : Sam Shalabi's Land Of Kush
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 29th 2012
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

n/a

Comments : I was really excited to see them again. I had actually planned to attend both evenings, but had to skip the second night having come down with the flu. The set list was the same as last June's, with slight variances in the execution of the songs. My very favourite piece, as last time, was with Elizabeth Anka Vajagic on vocals. All four members of Shalabi Effect were present but this time, Gen Heistek was not. Once again, a very nice concert.

Sam Shalabi & Jean-Guy Blanchard - Sala Rossa - October 29th 2012

Band : Sam Shalabi & Jean-Guy Blanchard
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 29th 2012
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

n/a

Comments : Announced at the very last minute, Sam Shalabi opened for his supergroup. Announced as a duo it was actually a trio : oud, double bass and drums (no information on who was the 3rd musician actually). A really enjoyable opening act and a great appetiser for tonight's main show which followed with no intermission.

Swans - La Tulipe - October 26th 2012

Band : Swans
Venue : La Tulipe
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 26th 2012
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :

To Be Kind
Avatar
She Loves Us
Southern Song
Coward
The Seer
Nathalie
The Apostate

Comments : When I first listened to The Seer, I must confess the album did not impress me as much as I would have expected, but after a few more spins it rapidly grew on me. I had no apprehension though as I know that the Swans live experience is wholly unrelated to any impressions one may get from their recordings. They are one of the bands who has impressed me most live and they did so it again tonight. The band played 8 songs over a 2+ hours set with no intermission or encore. They played the very early song Coward in the set, to my absolute delight. Once again, the show was extremely loud (therefore the sound was not always the best, but whatever), brutal and beautiful. A really great performance and one of the very best shows I have seen this year (or maybe since I last saw them?).

A Hawk And A Hacksaw - La Tulipe - October 26th 2012

Band : A Hawk And A Hacksaw
Venue : La Tulipe
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 26th 2012
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

Comments : Considering they are on Young God Records, I was quite curious to see them even if I have never heard them before. Their sound was quite interesting - I would describe it as some kind of Balkan folk - but I started to get a bit bored after a while.

Thee Majesty - Cabaret Mile End - October 20th 2012

Band : Thee Majesty
Venue : Cabaret Mile End (Phenomena)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 20th 2012
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Brutal-Eyes

Easing Your Pain
Shattering
All You Need To Do Is Breathe
Soul Searching 9/11
She's Learning Slowly
Monk-E Shaman
Arbiter Of Elegance
Godstar

Comments : The first time I saw Genesis P Orridge 13 years ago was with Thee Majesty. It's taken this long to finally (and happily) see this project again. I was lucky enough to catch the soundchecks in the afternoon, and we got a front row table reserved (thank you Bryin!). The performance itself was pretty much what I was expecting: visually provocative and musically great.

Cat Power - Metropolis - October 19th 2012

Band : Cat Power
Venue : Metropolis
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 19th 2012
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
Cherokee

Sun
5,6,9
Human Being
King Rides By
Manhattan
Bully
Angelitos
The Greatest
Always On My Own
Silent Machine
Nothing But Time
Peace And Love
I Don't Blame You
Ruin
Ramblin' Woman

Comments : For some reason, I've always managed to miss Cat Power's concerts, and while the 2 previous albums did not really catch my interest, I really like the new one. We got to the venue early enough to secure our front-row dead-center spot. After 2 opening bands (the second one being really awful), the show finally started. Chan Marshall looked really nervous on stage (I actualy don't remember seeing a singer so jittery since Daniel Darc), the pre-recorded loops of backing vocals weren't synched too well, but whatever, the magic was definitely there. As the show progressed, Chan seemed more comfortable and told us she was having a good time. Towards the end she even handed me a bouquet of small flowers. I really enjoyed the setlist and the show; definitely one of my highlights of 2012.

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Théâtre Corona - October 17th 2012

Band : Jon Spencer Blues Eplosion
Venue : Théâtre Corona
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 17th 2012
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Last time I saw the Blues Explosion was back in 2004 at the Metropolis. I missed their set at Osheaga 2010 due to a pretty stupid schedule overlap - I had to choose between them and Sonic Youth. Despite the fact that I haven't been really following their releases during the last 8 years, I was definitely looking forward to see them again. I hadn't been back to the Corona since my Godspeed marathon last year and I was a bit disappointed to see that the balcony was closed. We went for the front row instead. The sound started out really not good but improved slightly a bit later in the show. Despite this and an uninteresting light show, I enjoyed the band's very energetic performance. The second part of the 40 minutes main set was really really good.

Klaxon Gueule - Casa Del Popolo - October 9th 2012

Band : Klaxon Gueule
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 9th 2012
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : After a half hour intermission, Michel F Coté joined Alexandre and Bernard for a set as Klaxon Gueule. I was pleased that there was no special guest this time and that I could see the band performing as a trio again. Tonight's set evolved between free and more avant garde sounds. It was a nice balance between my two previous Klaxon Gueule experiences.

Alexandre St-Onge & Bernard Falaise - Casa Del Popolo - October 9th 2012

Band : Alexandre St-Onge & Bernard Falaise
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 9th 2012
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : After a short solo set by Bernard Falaise and no real intermission, Alexandre joined Bernard on stage. Unlike some improvised collaborations I have seen before, it was quite obvious that the two musicians are used to performing together. Both parts were quite complementary and blended perfectly together.

Alexandre St-Onge - Casa Del Popolo - October 9th 2012

Band : Alexandre St-Onge
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 9th 2012
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : The evening started with a short set by Alexandre which reminded me a bit of the one he played last year at Le Cagibi. I was also really happy to see a show that starts on time for once.
