Hélène Prévost - Galerie Espace Projet - November 28th 2012

Date : November 28th 2012
Grade : 3/5

Comments : I initally planned to leave after Michel's set but seeing it was still early and my friend Eric told me it should be interesting, I decided to stick around. I think I did well. An interesting performance, very old school, maybe a bit long towards the end but definitely something nice to conclude this early night out.

Michel Meunier - Galerie Espace Projet - November 28th 2012

Band : Michel Meunier
Venue : Galerie Espace Projet
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 28th 2012
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

Solange Berthe

Comments : Michel's set was the reason why I decided to come to the show tonight. While I am really familiar with his project with Fluffy (Whilst), I did not really know what to expect on his own, but you all know that I quite enjoy seeing concert in art galeries. Michel played one long piece running just under 20 minutes dedicated to the memory of his mother. The set was performed without amplification, using the actual sound of the instruments, except for a few drones from a portable CD player. A very intersting performance.

Erin Sexton - Galerie Espace Projet - November 28th 2012

Band : Erin Sexton
Venue : Galerie Espace Projet
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 28th 2012
Grade : 2/5

Comments : The first time I saw Erin Sexton, her performance left me quite unispired. Her set up was totally different tonight : 2 contact microphones and 2 speakers. She played using the microphones on the speakers. Sadly, it left me with exactly the same impressions. The set was quite short (around 10 minutes or so) but I started to feel a bit bored very fast. Sorry.

Sébastien Roux - Conservatoire De Musique De Montréal - November 15th 2012

Band : Sébastien Roux
Venue : Conservatoire De Musique De Montréal - Salle Multi (Électrochoc 3)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 15th 2012
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

Créancier De Secondes
American Girls No.1
American Girls No.2
Quatuor

Comments : I have seen Sébastien Roux four times (more if I count Oldine and Rabbits Sorrow) and he always played the guitar, so it was a bit of a surprise to see an elecro-acoustic presentation. Sébastien performed at the soundboard in the back of the room, behind the audience. We were seated in an darkened room, facing speakers with candles on top. Four pieces were played tonight: three very short ones based on field recordings and one long one (about 40 minutes) based on Beethoven. I really enjoyed the first three but found the last one a bit too long, despite some great moments. I skipped the last show he played in Montreal due to pricey tickets. I am glad I went tonight, but I do not regret not going last time. Hmm.

Comments : Prior to his performance at Le Conservatoire, we got a conference/lecture where Sébastien Roux explained his path as a musician, from playing guitar in a (post)rock band to becoming an electro-acoustic composer. He also explained the tracks which will be performed tonight. Nothing really exciting overall, but the discussion did make me realize I was not up to date with what he has been doing for the last 8 years or so.

Seth Horvitz - Centre PHI, Espace B - November 10th 2012

Band : Seth Horvitz
Venue : Centre PHI, Espace B
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 10th 2012
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

Bells
Tentacles
Octaves, Systematically Filled And Folded
Arch Study For The Highest Eight Notes
Echoes
An Approximative Harmonic Series Built On An Approximate Harmonic Series
Strumming Machine

Comments : After a very brief intermission, the second performer presented several pieces written for a player piano. He started his computer and let the piano play on its own for about 40 minutes using the natural reverberation of the room, just like the first concert. People were allowed and encouraged to walk around the room throughout the performance. I found the performance itself interesting, although maybe a bit too long, but the last song was really good. A nice, interesting and different evening overall.

Laura Cetilia - Centre PHI, Espace B - November 10th 2012

Band : Laura Cetilia

Date : November 10th 2012
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

Comments : I have to confess I did not know anything about the artists performing tonight. All I knew was that tonight was a free, invitation-only event (thanks Eric for the tickets!) and that it was presented in parallel with the Ryoji Ikeda exhibition in Montreal, so I was expecting something minimal. When we arrived, small bar tables were set across the room and we were told that no amplification will be used tonight to maximize the natural reverb of the high ceilinged room. The first performer made amazing drones using the cello. A very nice, short and trippy performance.

Esmerine - Musée D'art Contemporain - November 2nd 2012

Band : Esmerine
Venue : Musée D'art Contemporain - Salle Beverly Webster Rolph
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 2nd 2012
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :

n/a

Comments : Remember my curse with Esmerine ? Well, tonight was no exception. The setting was perfect on every point - no chatting audience, no special guests - but I was sick. I should have probably gone home to bed, but I really enjoyed the set a lot. The band performed some new songs they wrote during their recent residency in Istanbul, so we can probably expect a new release soon. It would have been a great evening if it wasn't for the flu.
