Mono - Sala Rossa - November 16th 2013

Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Yearning
Dream Odyssey
Pure As Snow
Kanata
Ashes In The Snow
Halcyon (Beautiful Days)

Comments : I was quite happy to see Mono back at the Sala Rossa instead of Il Motore. The room got filled pretty quickly tonight and the concert started on time. Mono played a pretty good set with a nice setlist, although no surprises as usual.

My Bloody Valentine - Metropolis - November 6th 2013

Band : My Bloody Valentine
Venue : Metropolis
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 6th 2013
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :

Honey Power
Cigarette In Your Bed
Only Tomorrow
Come In Alone
Only Shallow
Nothing Much To Lose
Who Sees You
To Here Knows When
Wonder 2
Soon
Feed Me With Your Kiss
You Made Me Realise

Comments : Despite the fact that the 2008 reunion tour had not impressed me that much, I decided to go to see them again. I am really glad I did despite being jetlagged. Tonight's show exceeded my impressions from 5 years ago. A very nice and solid set.

Dumb Numbers - Metropolis - November 6th 2013

Band : Dumb Numbers
Venue : Metropolis
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 6th 2013
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I actually had no clue who the opening band was, but was quite excited to find out that this was some kind of supergroup featuring Members of Dinosaur Jr, Melvins and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. However, it turned out to be a disappointing set, not bad but not interesting either.

Thisquietarmy - Sonic - October 30th 2013

Band : Thisquietarmy
Venue : Sonic
Town (country) : Lyon (France)
Date : October 30th 2013
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : This is the second time I see Eric in Europe and the second time I see him at Sonic. A pretty solid set as usual, and there is always a different vibe when seeing him somewhere else than in Montreal. Very enjoyable.

Aun - Sonic - October 30th 2013

Band : Aun
Venue : Sonic
Town (country) : Lyon (France)
Date : October 30th 2013
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : It is great to be back at Sonic ! This is definitely one of my favourite venues ever and I am always so happy to see that they are still around everytime I come back to Europe. Tonight's bill made me feel twice at home with Aun and thisquietarmy. I had not seen Aun for quite a while in Montreal actually and they are still performing as a duo, albeit more electronic than last time.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Hammermith Apollo - October 28th 2013

Band : Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Venue : Hammersmith Apollo
Town (country) : London (UK)
Date : October 28th 2013
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
We No Who U R
Jubilee Street
Abattoir Blues
Tupelo
Red Right Hand
Mermaids
From Her To Eternity
West Country Girl
God Is In The House
Love Letter
Into My Arms
Higgs Boson Blues
Hiding All Away
The Mercy Seat
Stagger Lee
Push the Sky Away
We Real Cool
Deanna
Give Us A Kiss

Comments : Last evening at the Apollo and we managed to get our front row spots once again. Nick gave me the thumb up when he got on stage. I was really happy to hear West Country Girl a second time but no Stranger Than Kindness. Another great show. Now I am kind of bummed out this was the last one for a while.

Shilpa Ray - Hammersmith Apollo - October 28th 2013

Band : Shilpa Ray
Venue : Hammersmith Apollo
Town (country) : London (UK)
Date : October 28th 2013
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I had seen Shilpa Ray's band opening for Acid Mothers Temple in Montreal a couple of years back, after they had toured with Grinderman. It did not really inspire me back then and I don't remember much of their performance. For the Bad Seeds, Shilpa performed solo, singing and playing harmonium. It was good overall and I was starting to enjoy her solo set after three nights in a row.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Hammermith Apollo - October 27th 2013

Band : Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Venue : Hammersmith Apollo
Town (country) : London (UK)
Date : October 27th 2013
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
We No Who U R
Jubilee Street
Abattoir Blues
Tupelo
Red Right Hand
Mermaids
From Her To Eternity
West Country Girl
God Is In The House
Into My Arms
People Ain't No Good
Higgs Boson Blues
Hiding All Away
The Mercy Seat
Stagger Lee
Push The Sky Away
We Real Cool
Papa Won't Leave You, Henry
Give Us A Kiss

Comments : Tonight was a very special night as I think it was the only time I did not hear Deanna in about 20 years! I was also really happy to hear West Country Girl again. The most striking moment of the evening was when Nick announced on stage that Lou Reed had died and dedicated Push The Sky Away to him.

Les Colettes - Hammersmith Apollo - October 27th 2013

Band : Les Colettes
Venue : Hammersmith Apollo
Town (country) : London (UK)
Date : October 27th 2013
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : A second opener was added to the Saturday show, and being Warren Ellis' wife's band they were slotted between Shilpa Ray and the Bad Seeds. I found this extremely uncool for Shilpa who is opening for the whole tour. This being said, it was interesting to see, although it's definitely not my kind of stuff and I don't think I would like to see them again.

Saturday, 26 October 2013

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Hammermith Apollo - October 26th 2013

Band : Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Venue : Hammersmith Apollo
Town (country) : London (UK)
Date : October 26th 2013
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
We No Who U R
Jubilee Street
Abattoir Blues
Tupelo
Stranger Than Kindness
Mermaids
From Her To Eternity
Love Letter
Far From Me
Higgs Boson Blues
Hiding All Away
The Mercy Seat
Stagger Lee
Push The Sky Away
We Real Cool
Deanna
Red Right Hand
Jack The Ripper
Give Us A Kiss

Comments : After being a bit disappointed by the North American shows earlier this year, I was a slightly less excited to see the Bad Seeds again, but on the other hand I have always had good experiences at the Hammersmith Apollo. George Vjestica has replaced Ed Kueper on the guitar, and I have to say I did not miss him at all during the set. On the contrary, I found the band more cohesive. A pretty solid Bad Seeds set: I was really happy to hear Stranger than Kindness again and also Far From Me. The songs from the new album sounded much better than on the album and the previous NA shows but I was really unimpressed by the new song Give Us A Kiss.

Tindersticks - Barbican Centre - October 25th 2013

Band : Tindersticks
Venue : Barbican Centre
Town (country) : London (UK)
Date : October 25th 2013
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
Tricklin'
Marseilles Sunshine
A Night So Still
Hushabye Mountain
The Organist Entertains
Come Feel The Sun
She's Gone
Dancing

Sometimes It Hurts
If You're Looking For A Way Out

Show Me Everything
This Fire of Autumn
Medicine
City Sickness
My Oblivion
Sleepy Song
Say Goodbye To The City
A Night In
I Know That Loving
What Are You Fighting For?
Travelling Light
Can We Start Again ?
Patchwork

Comments : We found out about this show almost at the last minute, so we did not score the best possible seats and we were also completely jet-lagged. The nice surprise of the evening is that the band performed a short set before their actual regular set. Probably one of the best Tindersticks show I have seen in about 10 years.

Wednesday, 16 October 2013

Dora Bleu - Casa Del Popolo - October 16th 2013

Band : Dora Bleu
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 16th 2013
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Dorothy has not performed in town for a while and I was really happy to see her in a more proper venue this time. She performed a very nice, short solo set of about 30 minutes. The absence of collaborators made the performance definitely more intimate.

Monday, 14 October 2013

Charlemagne Palestine - Sala Rossa - October 14th 2013

Band : Charlemagne Palestine
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 14th 2013
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : This is probably one of my most anticipated fall shows as I previously managed to miss Charlemagne every time he played in my vicinity. It was definitely worth the wait. As we were waiting outside for the doors to open, Charlemagne came and introduced himself to us. The evening started at 8:30 sharp with a laptop performance, starting very minimally and gradually turning into something very powerful. Then we were treated to a video projection of Charlemagne wandering around a building and screaming, shot from point-of-view. This was immediately followed by a piano piece. The whole evening wrapped up at 10pm. Both laptop and piano performances were absolutely amazing even if Charlemagne did not drink a whole bottle of cognac, as urban legend dictates.

Nine Inch Nails - Centre Bell - October 3rd 2013

Band : Nine Inch Nails
Venue : Centre Bell
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 3rd 2013
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
Copy of A
1,000,000
Terrible Lie
March Of The Pigs
Piggy
All Time Low
Disappointed
Came Back Haunted
Find My Way
The Frail
The Wretched
Survivalism
Satellite
Running
A Warm Place
Somewhat Damaged
Wish
Burn
The Hand That Feeds
Head Like A Hole
Echoplex
I'm Afraid Of Americans
While I'm Still Here
Black Noise
Hurt

Comments : Interestingly, the last time I went to a show at the Bell Centre was to see Nine Inch Nails. I did not think I was going to see them on this tour but thanks to a very kind person (you know who you are and thank you so much again!) I was lucky enough to be invited for tonight's show. I had a great seat for the show. The concert was more rock than previously which was not a big surprise considering the new album. However, I never expected to see NIN with a saxophone and back-up singers, that was a definite change. Overall, a nice show as expected.

Explosions In The Sky - Centre Bell - October 3rd 2013

Band : Explosions In The Sky
Venue : Centre Bell
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 3rd 2013
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
Catastrophe And The Cure
The Birth And Death Of The Day
Greet Death
Let Me Back In
The Only Moment We Were Alone

Comments : I have never really enjoyed seeing a concert in an arena, and I am not even referring to the unpleasant experience of security with metal detectors. Tonight, Explosions In The Sky played a solid concert as usual, albeit too short for my taste. It is a real shame their concert was hampered by terrible accoustics and the non-stop chatter of the audience who obviously did not care about the opening band one bit.

Wednesday, 25 September 2013

The Legendary Pink Dots - Le Petit Campus - September 25th 2013

Band : The Legendary Pink Dots
Venue : Le Petit Campus (Pop Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 25th 2013
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : The Pink Dots skipped Montreal on their last couple of North American tours. It has been 5 years since they last performed here and there have been a lot of line-up changes since : Niels van Hoorn has left and the band is now a trio with Erik Drost back on guitar. The show was quite good, their sound returning to earlier Pink Dots material. They played a few old tracks, including Black List and Casting the Runes. Unfortunately, as it happens too often, the show started way too late and I started to fade out halfway through their set. The band came back for a second encore, but sadly I was so tired I could not have cared less.

Wednesday, 18 September 2013

Peter Hook & The Light - Club Soda - September 18th 2013

Band : Peter Hook & The Light
Venue : Club Soda
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 18th 2013
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Homage
Ceremony
Procession
Dreams Never End
Truth
Senses
Chosen Time
ICB
The Him
Doubts Even Here
Denial
Cries and Whispers
Age of Consent
We All Stand
The Village
586
Your Silent Face
Ultraviolence
Ecstasy
Leave Me Alone
Everything's Gone Green
Temptation
Blue Monday

Comments : This evening did not start so well actually. Doors opened 40 minutes late, therefore the opening band started at 8:45 instead of 8:00. Furthermore, we had an "actual" opening band instead of Slaves Of Venus (which is basically Peter Hook & The Light playing Joy Division). Anyways, I was really looking forward to Peter Hook & the Light play Movement and Power, Corruption & Lies tonight, especially after seeing New Order without Peter Hook last month. Tonight's show lasted for over 2 hours and left me pretty much with the same impressions as the first time I saw them: fantastic, although I think Peter Hook actually played the bass more tonight.

Tuesday, 17 September 2013

Pere Ubu - Cabaret Du Mile End - September 17th 2013

Band : Pere Ubu
Venue : Cabaret Du Mile End
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 17th 2013
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : As soon as the band got on stage, we left our chairs on the side to stand in front of the stage as suggested by the drummer and the keyboard player a bit earlier. I was brave enough to stand in front of David Thomas, who seemed to be in a rather good mood. A very good show as usual, as expected, despite the disappointing low turnout.

Gagarin - Cabaret Du Mile End - September 17th 2013

Band : Gagarin
Venue : Cabaret Du Mile End
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 17th 2013
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I had absolutely no clue who was the opening band tonight and it is with great surprise that I saw David Thomas getting on stage. The image of the other band member (who remained in Britain due to visa issues) was projected on a screen with minimal electronic music playing. During the short set, David Thomas was joined on stage by a chicken— well, someone wearing a chicken mask—and other Pere Ubu members. It was actually a very interesting set and I enjoyed it a lot. Now I have to dig around to find more about this project.

Monday, 16 September 2013

Chelsea Light Moving - Sala Rossa - September 16th 2013

Band : Chelsea Light Moving
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 16th 2013
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : The demise of Sonic Youth gives us the opportunity to see the ex-members in smaller venues and I will not complain about this. After Lee Ranaldo this Summer, I was very excited to see Thurston Moore at Sala Rossa (downsized from Cabaret Mile End). I did not have the chance to listen to the Chelsea Light Moving album before the show but still found it good overall, albeit not the best one I had seen from Thurston Moore. Ono Soul played during the encores which was much appreciated. Now, can I get Body/Head ?

Sunday, 15 September 2013

Le Bal Des Enragés - Cabaret Du Mile End - September 15th 2013

Band : Le Bal Des Enragés
Venue : Cabaret Du Mile End
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 15th 2013
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Le Bal Des Enragés is definitely the ultimate cover band ever if you have ever listened to french punk rock in the 80/90s. An allstar line up featuring members of Parabellum, Lofofora, Tagada Jones, Punish Yourself... Probably not a show I would go to see on my own, but very entertaining and a lot of enthousiasm from everyone on stage. I really enjoyed seeing Vincent singing Ace Of Spades, I Wanna Be your Dog and Just One Fix.

Sunday, 1 September 2013

Eric Boivin & Rachel Ní Chuinn - L'oblique - September 1st 2013

Band : Eric Boivin & Rachel Ní Chuinn
Venue : L'oblique
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 1st 2013
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : After a short intermission, Rachel came back to perform with Eric. This time, Rachel concentrated on a circuit bent videogame unit intended to play golf, while Eric played on his laptop and pedals. Just like the first set, the performance was short and kept us interested from beginning to end. A very nice instore event. I definitely need to attend these more often.

Rachel Ní Chuinn - L'oblique - September 1st 2013

Band : Rachel Ní Chuinn
Venue : L'oblique
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 1st 2013
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : There is nothing better than a free experimental show on a sunny Sunday afternoon on a long weekend, is there ? A short and interesting performance where the audience could interact/interfere with the sounds played form Rachel's laptop through her iphone.

Wednesday, 28 August 2013

Blonde Redhead - Théâtre Corona - August 28th 2013

Band : Blonde Redhead
Venue : Théâtre Corona
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : August 28th 2013
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : After a disappointing show last time due to their (what I thought) uninspiring last album, I was less excited than usual to see them again. Yet, a smaller venue and the fact that they do not have a new album out, gave me a glimmer of hope. Well, the balcony was closed at the venue so it looked like I was probably not the only one disappointed with their previous show at Metropolis. The show started out quite well, but sadly fell back into the same lacklustre pattern as last time. After the first 3 songs I started to get bored with the setlist. There were a couple of highlights but I really wonder if I will go see them again or if I should simply call it quits ?

Sunday, 11 August 2013

Rob Zombie - Heavy MTL - August 11th 2013

Band : Rob Zombie
Venue : Parc Jean Drapeau (Heavy MTL)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : August 11th 2013
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
Teenage Nosferatu Pussy
Superbeast
Living Dead Girl
More Human Than Human
Super-Charger Heaven
Sick Bubble-Gum
Meet The Creeper
House Of 1000 Corpses
Dead City Radio And The New Gods Of Supertown
Enter Sandman
Thunder Kiss '65
Dragula

Comments : This was definitely the show I wanted to see at this year's festival as I really enjoyed them last time. Despite the potential for a rough crowd up front, I went to a spot in the first rows like a true dardevil. The crowd was indeed rough and probably a bit more intoxicated due to the later spot on the schedule. No big surprises from the props and decor but still pretty entertaining. I rather enjoyed the White Zombie songs on the setlist but was perplexed by the Metallica cover (?). My personal highlights of the evening were Teenage Nosferatu Pussy, More Human Than Human and of course, Dragula.

Sunday, 4 August 2013

New Order - Osheaga - August 4th 2013

Band : New Order
Venue : Parc Jean Drapeau (Osheaga)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : August 4th 2013
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Crystal
Regret
Ceremony
Your Silent Face
Bizarre Love Triangle
True Faith
5 8 6
The Perfect Kiss
Blue Monday
Temptation
Atmosphere
Shadowplay
Love Will Tear Us Apart

Comments : No one could ever replace Ian Curtis and no one can replace Peter Hook either. I was really sceptical about this one actually, but I am so happy to be wrong. It was a really great concert despite the absence of Peter Hook (both for his stage presence and his bass skills). The band has no new album to support so it was nothing but songs I wanted to hear by New Order. The show ended with 3 Joy Divison songs. I missed Peter Hook the most at this point. The versions were much less emotional than those we saw Peter Hook play a couple of years back. Still, a really great show.

Saturday, 3 August 2013

Explosions In The Sky - Osheaga - August 3rd 2013

Band : Explosions In The Sky
Venue : Parc Jean Drapeau (Osheaga)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : August 3rd 2013
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Catastrophe And The Cure
Postcard From 1952
The Birth And Death Of The Day
Your Hand In Mine
Greet Death
Let Me Back In
The Only Moment We Were Alone

Comments : Another great performance as expected. I really love this band live. A more intimate set than last time at Metropolis and a very intense and energetic one. On a side note, the Green stage is named after a brand of supposedly high tech electronics and had the worst sound of the entire festival again this year.

Friday, 2 August 2013

The Cure - Osheaga - August 2nd 2013

Band : The Cure
Venue : Parc Jean Drapeau (Osheaga)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : August 2nd 2013
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
Plainsong
Pictures Of You
Lullaby
High
The End Of The World
Lovesong
In Between Days
Just Like Heaven
From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea
A Forest
Bananafishbones
The Walk
Mint Car
Friday I'm In Love
Doing The Unstuck
Trust
Want
Fascination Street
The Hungry Ghost
Wrong Number
One Hundred Years
Disintegration
The Lovecats
The Caterpillar
Close To Me
Hot Hot Hot !!!
Let's Go To Bed
Why Can't I Be You?
Boys Don't Cry

Comments : Tonight's concert sounded exactly like the last time I saw them at the Paleo Festival. That could have been a good thing if it wasn't 11 years ago. It was pop song after pop song and after a while, I started to get a bit bored (example: Mint Car, Friday I'm In Love and Doing The Unstuck played one after another). It seems to me that The Cure play more or less the same setlists over and over again. As for the new songs (i.e. everything after Bloodflowers), I hope I never have to hear them again. The band played 20 minutes over their allotted time and the sound was cut by the stage manager during Boys Don't Cry. Not a bad performance per se, but tonight's show left me quite uninspired and at this point, I am not sure I will go see them again.

Monday, 22 July 2013

Misr - Casa Del Popolo - July 22nd 2013

Band : Misr
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 22nd 2013
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I really enjoyed Radwan and Jessica's collaboration last time so I was definitely looking forward to see them again. The duo is now called Misr and features David Payant on drums. Once again, they gave a great performance (without DJ interferences this time, thankfully) of just under 20 minutes. One long and very evolutive piece. I am really glad I went to see them again !

Friday, 21 June 2013

Nommos Nonet - Espace Pop - June 21st 2013

Band : Nommos Nonet
Venue : Espace Pop
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 21st 2013
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : A very great celebration of Summer indeed : an hommage to Stockhausen's 1975 Sirius for the vernissage of Serene Daoud. The result was quite lyrical and enjoyable. A great alchemy between the 8 musicians (despite the name nonet) and a really good performance.
