Aidan Baker - Casa Del Popolo - March 28th 2013

Band : Aidan Baker
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : March 28th 2013
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

n/a

Comments : It has been way too long since the I had last seen Aidan Baker, so I was quite looking forward to this one. The show was really good until Aidan started to sing and Dana Schechter and a guy on violin joined him on stage. I was a bit less impressed by this impromptu collaboration. Although I am glad to have been at this one shot performance, it is really not what I wanted to see. Humm.

Insect Ark - Casa Del Popolo - March 28th 2013

Band : Insect Ark
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : March 28th 2013
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :

n/a

Comments : I found out that this was a solo project of an ex-member of Angels Of Light and I quite enjoyed what I had heard online. Sadly, tonight's performance was quite bad. Dana Schechter seemed to have nothing but technical problems and started her set about 20 minutes late. When the show finally did start, everything was completely unbalanced and did not really improve as the show progressed. A very disappointing one.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Massey Hall - March 23rd 2013

Band : Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Venue : Massey Hall
Town (country) : Toronto, ON (Canada)
Date : March 23rd 2013
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
We No Who U R

Wide Lovely Eyes
Jubilee Street
We Real Cool
Higgs Boson Blues
From Her To Eternity
Red Right Hand
O Children
Jack The Ripper
Deanna
The Weeping Song
The Ship Song
The Mercy Seat
Love Letter
Stagger Lee
Push The Sky Away
Tupelo

Comments : After seeing two shows on the Push The Sky Away tour, I was not especially excited to go to Toronto tonight; very sad but true. However, we got something really special tonight: the band was accompanied on stage by strings (including Sophie from GY!BE) and a children's choir. I admit I was a bit sceptical at first, but it worked extremely well with the Bad Seeds. The new songs sounded great and I don't think I have ever enjoyed hearing the "The Ship Song" or "O Children" live this much. The show itself was much tighter than the others and really met our expectations. A very good one !

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Metropolis - March 22nd 2013

Band : Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Venue : Metropolis
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : March 22nd 2013
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
We No Who U R
Jubilee Street
Wide Lovely Eyes
Higgs Boson Blues
From Her To Eternity
Red Right Hand
Into My Arms
Deanna
Jack The Ripper
Your Funeral... My Trial
Papa Won't Leave You, Henry
God Is In The House
The Weeping Song
The Mercy Seat
Stagger Lee
Tupelo
Push The Sky Away

Comments : Thanks to the general admission policy, we managed to get our front row center spots for tonight. It's always great to see the Bad Seeds up close. However, I found the show overall was way too similar to the one in Nashville. The almost identical setlist (played every single night since the beginning of the tour) was disappointing to me the second time around. The one change in setlist consisted of playing Into My Arms instead of Stranger Than Kindness... total bummer for me. The 2008 Montreal show was undoubtedly the best one of the North American tour and the only one the band came back for a second encore. Unfortunately, tonight's wasn't.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Ryman Auditorium - March 16th 2013

Band : Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Venue : Ryman Auditorium
Town (country) : Nashville, TN (USA)
Date : March 16th 2013
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :

We No Who U R
Jubilee Street
Wide Lovely Eyes
Higgs Boson Blues
From Her To Eternity
Red Right Hand
Stranger Than Kindness
Jack The Ripper
Deanna
Your Funeral My Trial
God Is In The House
The Weeping Song
The Mercy Seat
Stagger Lee
Tupelo
Push The Sky Away

Comments : Let's face it, the new Bad Seeds album "Push The Sky Away" did not really impress me. However, I know that their songs sound great live and I could not pass up the opportunity to see one of my favourite bands playing at the legendary Ryman Auditorium. Sadly, I did not find the new songs really improved live. The setlist was average, no surprises here, and I am a bit fed up of hearing the same songs over and over for 20 years or so now (Nick, please stop playing Deanna!). I wasn't really impressed by the versions of most of the old songs either (Warren playing a flute solo on Red Right Hand... WTF?), except for Stranger Than Kindness which was really amazing! The absence of Mick Harvey was deeply felt both for his presence on stage and for his technical skills. I also missed Thomas Wydler on drums but I was really, really happy to see Barry Adamson as part of the band again. Overall, the show was just OK, my rating is boosted by the experience of seeing a show at the Ryman.

David Kristian - Savoy Du Metropolis - March 2nd 2013

Band : David Kristian
Venue : Savoy Du Metropolis (Nuit Blanche)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : March 2nd 2013
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

n/a

Comments : Tonight (or this morning as it was 1am already), David Kristian performed an electro pop set, very different from previous performances I had seen. Not my favourite genre, but it worked a bit better with the noisy audience (or maybe I was too tired to care anymore). We left the venue after this set and there were still lots of people (young and even more drunk) waiting to get in. This whole Nuit Blanche left me with a disappointing taste.

Roger Tellier-Craig - Savoy Du Metropolis - March 2nd 2013

Band : Roger Tellier-Craig
Venue : Savoy Du Metropolis (Nuit Blanche)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : March 2nd 2013
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

n/a

Comments : Here again, the neverending chatter in the audience made it really difficult to appreciate the music. I was also a bit disappointed by the track performed tonight. It was good, but I was expecting more.

Radwan Ghazi Moumneh - Savoy Du Metropolis - March 2nd 2013

Band : Radwan Ghazi Moumneh
Venue : Savoy Du Metropolis (Nuit Blanche)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : March 2nd 2013
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

n/a

Comments : Radwan performed a very interesting piece tonight. It started all acoustic on the oud and ended all electronic. Sadly the non stop chatter in the audience was louder than the music and made it impossible to fully appreciate the music.

Monstre - Savoy Du Metropolis - March 2nd 2013

Band : Monstre
Venue : Savoy Du Metropolis (Nuit Blanche)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : March 2nd 2013
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :

n/a

Comments : I had aboslutely no idea of the existence of the Savoy at the Metropolis until tonight. We started to feel that this was probably not the best choice of a venue while we waited in line along hundreds of young and drunk people who were going to see the free show in the main room of the Metropolis. I am not a big fan of Monstre solo material and the show was as I expected, no surprises.
