Nommos Nonet - Espace Pop - June 21st 2013

Venue : Espace Pop
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 21st 2013
Grade : 3/5

Comments : A very great celebration of Summer indeed : an hommage to Stockhausen's 1975 Sirius for the vernissage of Serene Daoud. The result was quite lyrical and enjoyable. A great alchemy between the 8 musicians (despite the name nonet) and a really good performance.

The Soft Moon - Société Des Arts Technologiques - June 15th 2013

Band : The Soft Moon
Venue : Société Des Arts Technologiques (Suoni Per Il Popolo)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 15th 2013
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

Comments : I missed the first two times they played in town, so I really wanted to check them out even if it meant having to go back to the SAT. A pretty energic and short set (45 minutes, including the encore) although maybe a bit staged. Interesting versions of the songs, slightly different than on the albums. An enjoyable evening indeed.

Dekoder - Société Des Arts Technologiques - June 15th 2013

Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 15th 2013

Comments : A very good and quite interesting local opening act. Probably the best in the genre I have seen for years even if I don't really follow that scene anymore. No superficial pageantry and sharp songs.

Cut Hands - Casa Del Popolo - June 10th 2013

Band : Cut Hands
Venue : Casa Del Popolo (Suoni Per Il Popolo)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 10th 2013
Grade : 3/5

Comments : Last time I saw William Bennett was 16 years ago. Even though I am much less familiar with Cut Hands than Whitehouse, this was definitely a show not to be missed. Thankfully, William Bennett made it across the Canadian border (Whitehouse was cancelled in 2006 because they were denied entry). However, it was 11:30pm when he finally got on stage and honestly, I was longing for my bed more than the show at that point. Nevertheless, the set was interesting as expected - no vocals, no controversy - only rythmics with a subtle noise added now and then for good measure. Not my usual stuff but well played and nice to see despite the late hour.

Spectre Folk - L'oblique - June 8th 2013

Band : Spectre Folk
Venue : L'oblique
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 8th 2013
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

Comments : It has been way too long since I last saw an instore at l'Oblique. Although I did not know Spectre Folk at all, the current line up was not to be missed : Steve Shelley, Peter Nolan & Mark Ibolt. Steve Shelley did not perform as he was touring with Lee Ranaldo. It would have been amazing to see him perform in such a setting, but I did not really miss his presence this afternoon. The music was good and I had a good time. Thanks to l'Oblique for putting this one on !

Jefre Cantu-Ledesma & Paul Clipson - Musée D'art Contemporain - June 7th 2013

Band : Jefre Cantu-Ledesma & Paul Clipson
Venue : Musée D'art Contemporain - Salle Beverly Webster Rolph (Suoni Per Il Popolo)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 7th 2013
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :

Comments : I was not really familiar with Jefre Cantu-Ledesma's music outside of Tarentel, but was really looking forward to this show. It did not disappoint at all. A very nice increase in intensity towards the end of the 45 minutes set, accompanied by amazing super-8 projections by Paul Clipson. A really enjoyable set.

Le Révélateur - Musée D'art Contemporain - June 7th 2013

Band : Le Révélateur
Venue : Musée D'art Contemporain - Salle Beverly Webster Rolph (Suoni Per Il Popolo)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 7th 2013
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

Comments : Back to one of my favourite venues in town, the sound is always very good, the audience is usually respectful, shows start on time and finish early. Tonight was my second experience with Roger Tellier-Craig's electronic music, this time accompanied by retro-futuristic computer animation projections. I think I actually enjoyed the first show more but it was definitely interesting to see again.

Lee Ranaldo & Steve Shelley - Sala Rossa - June 6th 2013

Band : Lee Ranaldo & Steve Shelley
Venue : Sala Rossa (Suoni Per Il Popolo)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 6th 2013
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :

Comments : Lee Ranaldo has always been my favourite Sonic Youth member. He is also the one I have seen most often outside of Sonic Youth. Although his latest release "Between the Times and the Tides" is not my favourite, I was really looking forward to see him again and I really enjoyed tonight's performance a lot. The somewhat poppy songs from the new album sounded great acoustic and Lee Ranaldo even managed to make some feedback noise with an acoustic guitar. The atmosphere was very relaxed for this seated show with Lee sharing anecdotes about each song. A great evening !

Nick Kuepfer - Sala Rossa - June 6th 2013

Band : Nick Kuepfer
Venue : Sala Rossa (Suoni Per Il Popolo)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 6th 2013
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I did not know much about Nick Kuepfer before tonight, except that he had released a record on Constellation. The presence on stage of Eric Craven was definitely a good omen though. A nice and subtle experimental set to start the evening and to kick off my shows at Suoni this year.
