Nadja - Casa Del Popolo - December 19th 2014

Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : December 19th 2014
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Dark Cicles
Flowers Of Flesh
Icelight

Comments : It had been quite a while since the last time I saw Nadja, so I was really happy to see them on the same bill as my everlasting local favourite act Thisquietarmy. I really enjoyed tonight's set a lot, including old and new material.

Thisquietarmy - Casa Del Popolo - December 19th 2014

Band : Thisquietarmy
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : December 19th 2014
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :

Comments : Nice to see Eric again at Casa after two shows at La Vitrola this Summer. Another seamless and very enjoyable set.

Friday, 12 December 2014

Pharmakon - La Vitrola - December 12th 2014

Band : Pharmakon
Venue : La Vitrola
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : December 12th 2014
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Six months after her show at Sala Rossa, I was really happy to see Pharmakon again in Montreal. Tonight's set was a bit longer than last time (24 minutes) and as intense, very enjoyable once again.

Drub - Brasserie Beaubien - November 30th 2014

Band : Drub
Venue : Brasserie Beaubien (Cuch Fest IX)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 30th 2014
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
Concsciousness Circus Tent
A Faint Heart Pulse In Dub Mirror
Corps Accords
Happiness Of The Absurd

Comments : Second show for Drub. I quite enjoyed their first concert a couple of weeks ago, so I thought that would be nice to see them again, especially as they were playing first. Tonight was also my first experience at Brasserie Beaubien. The show was in huge contrast with the venue's set up and it was another very nice experience.

Tuesday, 25 November 2014

Godspeed You ! Black Emperor - Théâtre Granada - November 25th 2014

Band : Godspeed You ! Black Emperor
Venue : Théâtre Granada
Town (country) : Sherbrooke, QC (Canada)
Date : August 14th 2014
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
Albanian (Mladic)
Behemoth
? (new)
The Sad Mafioso (East Hastings)

Comments : GY!BE is always the perfect excuse for a road trip, although the venue security was not the most welcoming this time (enforced no photo policy and mandatory coat check). The attendance was also lower than expected and the balcony was closed to the public. Anyway, another great show, including the grand premiere of a brand new song. I enjoyed tonight more than the two nights in Montreal in January.

Tuesday, 18 November 2014

Elizabeth Anka Vajagic - Agora Du Coeur Des Sciences De l'UQAM - November 18th 2014

Band : Elizabeth Anka Vajagic
Venue : Agora Du Coeur Des Sciences De l'UQAM (RIDM)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 18th 2014
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Elizabeth has played no more than 3 shows since the last time I saw her and I sadly managed to miss each of them, so even a snow storm was not going to stop me tonight. An amazing performance as expected, probably her strongest I have seen in years. Now, I really hope to see her again soon and that a new album is on the way.

Sunday, 16 November 2014

Drub - Soundcentral - November 16th 2014

Band : Drub
Venue : Soundcentral
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 16th 2014
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
Concsciousness Circus Tent
A Faint Heart Pulse In Dub Mirror
Corps Accords
Happiness Of The Absurd

Comments : Live debut for this new local duo, and as it was an instore afternoon free show there was not real excuse to miss this one. It was a very nice first experience and I had a good time.

Saturday, 15 November 2014

The Tiger Lillies - Cinquième Salle - November 15th 2014

Band : The Tiger Lillies
Venue : Place Des Arts - Cinquième Salle
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 15th 2014
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
Sin
King Is Dead
Slaves
Alone
Stay Away From Him
Murder
Mad Hamlet
Dangerous Man
To Be Or Not to Be
1 2 3 4
Betray Me
Worms
Ophelia's Dream
Bordello
Bottles In The Sea
Release Me
Lover
Do You Love Me
Desolation Song

Comments : We found out quite late that the Tiger Lilles were coming back to Montreal so we got quite shitty seats. I also got a bit scared when I found out that tonight's show was a play (Hamlet), but my fears quickly dissapeared through the performance as the theatre parts were extremely well balanced with the songs.

Monday, 10 November 2014

Peter Hook & The Light - Club Soda - November 10th 2014

Band : Peter Hook & The Light
Venue : Club Soda
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 10th 2014
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Dead Souls
Colony
Wilderness
From Safety To Where...?
Insight
Ice Age
New Dawn Fades
Paradise
Weirdo
As It Is When It Was
Broken Promise
Way Of Life
Bizarre Love Triangle
All Day Long
Angel Dust
Every Little Counts
Love Vigilantes
The Perfect Kiss
This Time Of Night
Sunrise
Elegia
Sooner Than You Think
Subculture
Face Up
Thieves Like Us
Shellshock
Temptation
Blue Monday
Love Will Tear Us Apart

Comments : Another really great evening with Peter Hook & the Light. Tonight they performed Low Life and Brotherhood, we got a short set of Joy Division to start the evening and we even had Love Will Tear Us Apart as an unplanned encore. Surprisingly the attendance was lower than the previous times and the balcony was closed. What's next ? I will actually be more reserved if the next tour is Technique and Republique. The mandatory coat check at Club Soda was the usual mess.

Monday, 27 October 2014

Slowdive - Le National - October 27th 2014

Band : Slowdive
Venue : Le National
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 27th 2014
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
Slowdive
Avalyn
Catch The Breeze
Crazy For You
Machine Gun
Souvlaki Space Station
Blue Skied An' Clear
When The Sun Hits
Morningrise
She Calls
Dagger
Alison Golden Hair
Rutti
40 Days

Comments : I did not manage to catch Slowdive in the 1990s, so it was really great to finally see them live. The setlist was pretty solid as the band did not have a new album to promote. Sadly, tonight's show left me with the impression I was seeing them 20 years too late.

Low - Le National - October 27th 2014

Band : Low
Venue : Le National
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 27th 2014
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
No Comprende
Plastic Cup
On My Own
Holy Ghost
Sunflower
Canada
Lazer Beam
High + Right
Landslide

Comments : I was really happy when I found out that Slowdive were playing in Montreal on their North-American tour, but I was even happier when I found out that the opening band on the tour was Low. The set was absolutely great as expected, including a couple of new songs.

Wednesday, 22 October 2014

Ben Frost - Sala Rossa - October 23rd 2014

Band : Ben Frost
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 22nd 2014
Grade : n/a

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : The most overrated hipster diva ever cancelled his performance on twitter before telling the promoters. Mr Frost made us wait in the venue for over an hour for nothing after Le Révélateur finished their set. The excuse he found was that the venue's sound system did not meet his requirements (despite the venue providing the extra equipment he asked for) to play his music, although he has absolutely no issue selling mp3s on itunes, go figure... There will not be a next time for me.

Wednesday, 15 October 2014

Brighter Death Now - Sala Rossa - October 15th 2014

Band : Brighter Death Now
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 15th 2014
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Definitely the best performance of the evening. Cold Meat Industry is dead but nice to see that BDN is still alive. Roger was joined by Lina on stage. A nice harsh set as usual, but I found Roger much more confrontational with the audience than the previous times I had seen him.

Raison D'être - Sala Rossa - October 15th 2014

Band : Raison D'être
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 15th 2014
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I remember Raison D'être being not the most exciting band to see live, but I did not expect to get this bored at this show. The music seemed mostly pre-recorded as usual, and the use of some metal rail sounded like a good idea but Peter had way too much technical issues with it on stage. The sterotypical video projections did not help either. It was not bad per se, but Raison D'être is definitely better on CD.

Deutsch Nepal - Sala Rossa - October 15th 2014

Band : Deutsch Nepal
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 15th 2014
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I have not been especially impressed with my previous experences with Deutsch Nepal live due to the obvious high level of alcool intoxication of Lina on stage. Tonight he looked sober and the result was much more interesting. I liked the fact that he used some cassettes instead of a computer to play his pre-recorded music while singing. A nice set.

Thursday, 18 September 2014

Carla Bozulich - Piccolo Rialto - September 18th 2014

Band : Carla Bozulich
Venue : Piccolo Rialto (Pop Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 18th 2014
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
The Egg
Lazy Crossbones
Underdog
Gonna Stop Killing
Artificial Lamb
Let It Roll
One Hard Man

Comments : It had been three years since the last time I saw Carla Bozulich and she was long overdue in Montreal. I really enjoy her new album Boy and I am really happy with the current incarnation of her band with John Eichenseer and Lisa Gamble. Tonight's set was the best one I have seen in quite a while, both intense, violent and fragile at the same time. Sadly, the band played as an opener tonight. Before One Hard Man, a guy from the organization came to Carla telling her that they only had time for one last song and distastefully insisted that it had to be a short one. This rude intervention deprived us from hearing The Creeps, as written on the setlist.

Saturday, 13 September 2014

Total Life + Karl Lemieux - Dazibao - September 13th 2014

Band : Total Life + Karl Lemieux
Venue : Dazibao
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 13th 2014
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Tonight was the closing event for the exhibition Electronic Sound In A Shifting Landscape curated by Steve Bates and the art gallery was pretty packed when the show started. I had hopes that Dave Bryant would make a secret appearance in tonight's performance but he didn't. I found Karl's projections more violent this time (violent in the pace, not in the actual images) and Kevin's music got pretty harsh towards the end of the set, no complains here.

Sunday, 24 August 2014

Alexandre St-Onge - Stable - August 24th 2014

Band : Alexandre St-Onge
Venue : Stable
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : August 24th 2014 (5pm)
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Alexandre offered us a more exhuberent performance than Alex, pushing the limits of the lo-fi speakers installation. We wouldn't have expected less from him. The result was really enjoyable as usual. A really great Sunday afternoon event.

Alex MacSween - Stable - August 24th 2014

Band : Alex MacSween
Venue : Stable
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : August 24th 2014 (5pm)
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : We were lucky to be able to attend an almost private afternoon performance by two great artists on a very special set up. Both concerts happened on a lo-fi recycled speaker installation called The Sweet32 Speaker created by James Schidlowsky. Alex played a very interesting minimal and subtile electronic set.

Saturday, 23 August 2014

Martin Tétreault - Insectarium De Montréal - August 23rd 2014

Band : Martin Tétreault
Venue : Insectarium De Montréal (Siestes Musicales Au Royaume Des Insectes)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : August 23rd 2014
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : One of the two other performers today at the Insectarium was no one else than Martin Tetreault. It was absolutely great to see Martin in this amazing environment. Unlike Eric, Martin did not suffer from volume restrictions and both sets sounded great and his first one was absoluetly perfect.

Thisquietarmy - Insectarium De Montréal - August 23rd 2014

Band : Thisquietarmy
Venue : Insectarium De Montréal (Siestes Musicales Au Royaume Des Insectes)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : August 23rd 2014
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : This whole Summer the Insectarium presented a serie of concerts in their gardens, so it was a great opportunity to see Eric in a different set up (and probably the only opportunity ever to see him play while laying on a long chair under a parasol). Eric performed two short sets in this perfect environement. The first one suffered a bit from volume restrictions by the sound guy but the second one was just perfect.

Thursday, 14 August 2014

1/4 Tonne Overhaul - Casa Del Popolo - August 14th 2014

Band : 1/4 Tonne Overhaul
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : August 14th 2014
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Tonight was probably my favourite 1/4 Tonne concert and also their more intense one ever. The sounds of Eric, Nick and Mark blended amazingly. A really great performance and the perfect conclusion to a great evening.

Steve Bates - Casa Del Popolo - August 14th 2014

Band : Steve Bates
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : August 14th 2014
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : It was really great to see Steve playing in the same set up I had seen him the first time. Once again, he performed a solid and very enjoyable solo guitar set.

Just'au Crâne - Casa Del Popolo - August 14th 2014

Band : Just'au Crâne
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : August 14th 2014
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Tonight was also the resurrection of an old collaboration between Alexandre & Jonathan. I haven't been able to find any audio matrial anywhere before the show, but as usual, you can't go wrong with Alexandre. A very nice experience, almost esotheric, including pink duct tape and neon light.

Maggot Breeder - Casa Del Popolo - August 14th 2014

Band : Maggot Breeder
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : August 14th 2014
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : It has been 5 years since Maggot Breeder played live, which was way overdue. For his return, Reuel performed as a trombone/guitar duo. A very nice set as expected, short and sweet. I really liked the duo formula and I hope to see them again soon.

Saturday, 2 August 2014

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Osheaga - August 2nd 2014

Band : Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Venue : Parc Jean Drapeau (Osheaga)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : August 2nd 2014
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
From Her To Eternity
Jubilee Street
Tupelo
Mermaids
Red Right Hand
The Ship Song
Higgs Boson Blues
The Mercy Seat
Stagger Lee

Comments : Tonight, I was granted access to the side of the stage and was allowed to watch the whole show from there. You can't get any closer than that, especially in a field along with 40,000 people. Thanks again to the amazing people who let this once in a lifetime opportunity happen. It was truely amazing to be here and I am not even taking into consideration the fact that Jack White came to dance right next to me during Stagger Lee... This was definitely the perfect follow up to last night's intimate event. Thank you, thank you, thank you !

Friday, 1 August 2014

Nick Cave - Centre PHI - August 1st 2014

Band : Nick Cave
Venue : Centre PHI
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : August 2nd 2014
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
Love Letter
The Mercy Seat
God Is in the House
People Ain't No Good
Into My Arms
Sad Waters

I was one of the 89 lucky people who managed to get a ticket for tonight's special event. Sadly, Nick did not attend the cocktail himself and we had to drink our Nina Simones (absinthe & champagne cocktails named as a reference to the movie) by ourselves, so we had plenty. After the drinks came the Canadian premiere of the faux documentary 20,000 Days On Earth. I actually enjoyed it more than what I had thought. Last but not least, the Nick Cave solo performance came along with a Q&A. The songs on the piano were played between the questions and I was surprised and extremey happy to hear Sad Waters. A very special evening.

Saturday, 26 July 2014

Matmos - Metro Gallery - July 26th 2014

Band : Matmos
Venue : Metro Gallery (Charles St. Parking Lot)
Town (country) : Baltimore, MD (USA)
Date : July 26th 2014
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : It was really great to be able to catch Matmos in their hometown. They played a more experimental set than the last time I saw them in Montreal and I will certainly not complain about it. Sadly, the audience was pretty annoying and the non stop chatter of people who were waiting for the main act to play was quite distracting even from the front row.

Friday, 25 July 2014

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Mann Center - July 25th 2014

Band : Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Venue : Mann Center For The Performing Arts
Town (country) : Philadelphia, PA (USA)
Date : July 25th 2014
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
We Real Cool
Jubilee Street
Tupelo
Red Right Hand
Mermaids
From Her To Eternity
Into My Arms
God Is In The House
Higgs Boson Blues
The Weeping Song
The Mercy Seat
Stagger Lee
Push The Sky Away
Deanna
Jack The Ripper
The Lyre Of Orpheus

Comments : Unlike in DC, things did not really work out tonight. The security did not let people move forward (except from the first section), so I was stuck in my seat. It was like watching a DVD instead of being part of a live performance, so I did not really connect to the show. Gladly, I was able to make my way up during the encore and enjoyed the last 3 songs from a way more interesting point of view.

Wednesday, 23 July 2014

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - D.A.R. Constitution Hall - July 23rd 2014

Band : Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Venue : D.A.R. Constitution Hall
Town (country) : Washington, DC (USA)
Date : July 23rd 2014
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
We Real Cool
Jubilee Street
Tupelo
Do You Love Me ?
Red Right Hand
Mermaids
From Her To Eternity
West Country Girl
Into My Arms
People Ain't No Good
God Is In The House
The Weeping Song
Higgs Boson Blues
The Mercy Seat
Stagger Lee
Push The Sky Away
The Ship Song
Deanna
The Lyre of Orpheus

Comments : Once again, this Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds North-American tour was a real disappointement when it comes to the choice of venues as all the shows were reserved seating. Getting good seats were again impossible on the ever messy pre-sale, so I ended up going to see less shows than I initially intended to. However, tonight, I managed to make my way to the front and enjoyed a Bad Seeds concert the way I like it ! A nice show despite no real surprises on the setlist, but George Vjestica is definitely a great replacement to Ed Kueper.

Sunday, 20 July 2014

Thisquietarmy - La Vitrola - July 20th 2014

Band : Thisquietarmy
Venue : La Vitrola
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 20th 2014
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : My second time at La Vitrola and also my second time seeing thisquietarmy there. Sadly, Eric had technical problems once and this show was not the most memorable one I have seen, even if he managed to make up for the lack of reliability of the monitors.

Thursday, 17 July 2014

Sam Shalabi & Stefan Christoff - Casa Del Popolo - July 17th 2014

Band : Sam Shalabi & Stefan Christoff
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 17th 2014
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Unlike last month, tonight's collaboration had guests. I was almost disappointed when I found out because I was really looking forward to repeat the amazing experience I had once again. The evening was divided in two sets : the first one with Will Eizlini & Xarah Dion and the second one with two musicians I was not familiar with at all (Jahsun Drms and Mark Haynes). It was different than last time, but it was still very enjoyable. I definitely preferred the first one. I found the two gests on the second one a bit shy at first but the collaboration became really interesting once it built up.

Sunday, 29 June 2014

Eric Craven & Mark Molnar - Casa Del Popolo - June 29th 2014

Band : Eric Craven & Mark Molnar
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 29th 2014
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : After seeing Nick and Eric performing as a duo, I was quite curious to see what Eric & Marc could bring together on stage even if I already had a rough idea from the cassette they put out last year. Once again, I was not disappointed. There was an amazing progression to the short (20 minutes or so) performance and lots of intensity built up between the two performers. A very nice collaboration.
