Vajagic / Bates - 820 Plaza - December 1st 2015

Band : Vajagic / Bates
Venue : 820 Plaza
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : December 1st 2015
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :

Comments : Remember that scene in Wim Wender’s Wings Of Desire with Crime & The City Solution live ? Tonight’s event is probably the closest I will ever feel to that scene. The performance was filmed as part of the upcoming Karl Lemieux’s movie Maudite Poutine. The unusual venue (a decommissioned garage) had also European vibes. The show itself was amazing and the film crew not too distracting (except for the couple of times I had to move back to let the camera go between me and the stage). Both artists were more unleashed and Elizabeth used her voice this time. A truely memorable evening !

Alexandre St-Onge - Cinémathèque Québécoise - November 6th 2015

Band : Alexandre St-Onge
Venue : Cinémathèque Québécoise
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : November 6th 2015
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Once again, Alexandre showed us his amazing skills as a performance artist. Imaginative and innovative as always, he managed to fill in the space a the dark room lit only by the light of 2 laptop screens. A very interesting performance as usual.

William Basinski - Centre PHI - October 21st 2015

Band : William Basinski
Venue : Centre PHI
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 21st 2015
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Definitely the shows I was looking forward to see the most this Fall. The evening was divided in 3 parts : a screening of movies by James Elaine (with the music of William Basinski), a discussion with Malcom Goldstein and finally a live performance. I was not really impressed by the screening. It looked like the DVD was not really optimized for a big screen and the sound was also too compressed. Then came the Q&A and I discovered a Basinski I would have never expected based on his music. A very cool and funny guy indeed. Finally we had the live performance and it was absolutely phenomenal. Basinski played his new album Cascade and performed the short version of Disintegration Loops as an (impromptu ?) encore. The whole evening was finished around 10pm and it was great to have an early night out.

Chameleons Vox - Katacombes - October 3rd 2015

Band : Chameleons Vox
Venue : Katacombes
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : October 3rd 2015
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
Don't Fall
Here Today
Monkeyland
Second Skin
Up The Down Escalator
Less Than Human
Pleasure And Pain
Thursday's Child
As High As You Can Go
A Person Isn't Safe Anywhere These Days
Paper Tigers
View From A Hill
Swamp Thing
Perfume Garden
Soul In Isolation
Singing Rule Britannia (While The Walls Close In)

Comments : I was lucky enough to attend the very first reunion show of The Chameleons at the Manchester Academy back in 2000 but I managed to miss every single Chameleons, Mark Burgess or Chameleons Vox show after that. I was really excited about this show, although having 3 opening bands was a serious turndown. The show was sold out and the venue was packed, but I still managed to secure my usual spot. It was amazing to be able to hear the whole Scirpt Of The Bridge album. I actually realized tonight that the order of the tracks differ between the European and the North-American releases. I was an amazing show as expected despite the late hour and the heavily intoxicated (and therefore really annoying) audience members.

Low - Bar Le Ritz P.D.B - September 22nd 2015

Band : Low
Venue : Bar Le Ritz P.D.B
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 22nd 2015
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
No Comprende
Kid In The Corner
The Innocents
Plastic Cup
On My Own
Holy Ghost
Monkey
Spanish Translation
Lies
Into You
Pissing
DJ
What Part Of Me
Will The Night
Landslide
Sunflower
Two-Step

Comments : Tonight was my very first time at Le Ritz and I was nicely surprised by the transformation of the venue (it used to be Il Motore). It is still a long way out to get there, but it looks much nicer inside. Sadly the video projections did not work at all on the walls and the band stopped it after the first song. I really wish the venue would have turned on more lights on stage at this point. I like the new album more than the previous one, so I enjoyed the show more, although I wish they would change the old tracks they are playing a bit more from tour to tour. No big surprises in the setlist (except for Two-step requested by my friend), but it was once again really nice to hear Pissing. Alan seemed happy to be here and was quite chatty with the audience. Hope to see them again soon.

Lee Ranaldo - Ubisoft - September 19th 2015

Band : Lee Ranaldo
Venue : Ubisoft (Pop Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 19th 2015
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I was reading Kim Gordon’s memoir when the tickets for this show went on sale, so it probably unconsciously influenced me to go to see this one. The location (on a rooftop terrace) sounded also really appealing. However getting tickets were another story as the website of the tickets office was really unreliable. Sadly on the day of the event, the rain made the promoters move the show to a conference room inside the Ubisoft building instead. Mind you, a nice one, but still a conference room instead of a terrace... Tonight, Lee was accompanied by another guitar player he introduced as Raul. The show was nice, but not special.

Friday, 18 September 2015

Godflesh - Le National - September 18th 2015

Band : Godflesh
Venue : Le National (Pop Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 18th 2015
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
New Dark Ages
Deadend
Shut Me Down
Life Giver Life Taker
Carrion
Towers Of Emptiness
Christbait Rising
Streetcleaner
Spite
Crush My Soul
Like Rats

Comments : Last time I saw Godflesh was 14 years ago and Paul Raven was playing the bass. That particular show had left me disappointed based on my previous experiences with the band. I still had quite high expectations for this reunion even if the new album did not impress me as much as I would have wanted to. Anyway, that was a great show and I had a really great time. Probably not the best Godflesh concert I have ever seen, but a pretty good one. Sadly the venue was far from being sold out (the balcony was closed to the publis), so I doubt they will be back in Montreal anytime soon.

Prurient - Le National - September 18th 2015

Band : Prurient
Venue : Le National (Pop Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 18th 2015
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I have been buying records from Hospital Productions the last few times I went to New York, so I was quite curious to see Dominic live. Sadly, the result was not as exciting as I thought it would be.

Friday, 11 September 2015

Maggot Breeder - Brasserie Beaubien - September 11th 2015

Band : Maggot Breeder
Venue : Brasserie Beaubien
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 11th 2015
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I was not really looking forward to ever come back to Brasserie Beaubien, but Maggot Breeder shows are too rare to miss. The first band started over one hour late (despite the cancellation of one of the 4 acts) and the attendance was quite low. I was already 11:45pm when Maggot Breeder got on stage. Reuel was accompanied by Neb on electronics and Charlie on acoustic guitar. Their short set was pretty good despite the poor listening conditions of Brasserie Beaubien. I really hope to see them again soon in a better venue.

Tuesday, 1 September 2015

Vajagic / Bates - Casa Del Popolo - September 1st 2015

Band : Elizabeth Anka Vajagic / Steve Bates
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 1st 2015
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Probably one of the most exciting collaborations in the local scene in a while. The result was more abstract than what I was expecting and I wish Elizabeth would have used her voice, but there were some really amazing moments. I am not sure if they plan anything more together for the future, so this was definitely not to be missed.

Sophie Trudeau / Michaela Grill - Casa Del Popolo - September 1st 2015

Band : Sophie Trudeau / Michaela Grill
Venue : Casa Del Popolo
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : September 1st 2015
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : An audio-visual collaboration, although I am not sure whether the video projections were actually played live or just from a DVD. The film showed abstract images of a pelican. Musically, the result was very reminiscent of Silver Mt Zion. It was a short and interesting performance.

Thursday, 30 July 2015

Bastard Noise - La Vitrola - July 30th 2015

Band : Bastard Noise
Venue : La Vitrola (Rrroooaaarrr)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 30th 2015
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I had never seen Bastard Noise before tonight and I was quite looking forward to see them. Their set was more ambient than what I would have thought and really enjoyable. It was also really nice to see a show at la Vitrola which does not finish too late for once.

Pharmakon - La Vitrola - July 30th 2015

Band : Pharmakon
Venue : La Vitrola (Rrroooaaarrr)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 30th 2015
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : It was my third time seeing Pharmakon in a year. Sadly, tonight’s performance did not quite meet my expectations. As the intensity was starting to build up, Margaret seemed to have some technical problems with a wire and decided to cut her set short. Dommage.

Tuesday, 7 July 2015

Xylouris White - Sala Rossa - July 7th 2015

Band : Xylouris White
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 7th 2015
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I really enjoyed their set opening for Swans a few months back and Goats was one of my favourite albums of last year, so I was really happy to be able to see them again. Once again I was not disappointed. Jim was magnificent as usual and the drums and luth blended together amazingly. At the end of the 90 minutes set, Thierry Amar joined them for a couple of songs. However, the hipster audience was annoying as hell. The band had specifically requested that the venue did not put chairs for people to sit during the show, so everyone sat on the bare floor and would not let you enjoy the show standing up because it was blocking their view. Go figure.

Friday, 3 July 2015

Elizabeth Anka Vajagic - La Vitrola - July 3rd 2015

Band : Elizabeth Anka Vajagic
Venue : La Vitrola
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 3rd 2015
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Another amazing performance by Elizabeth. I am really happy to see that she is performing more often and I really enjoy her new material.

Wednesday, 1 July 2015

Nels Cline & Julian Lage - Gesù - July 1st 2015

Band : Nels Cline & Julian Lage
Venue : Gesù (Festival International De Jazz De Montreal)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : July 1st 2015
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I have never been a Wilco fan (the only reason I went to see them back then was because Low was opening for them), but I always wanted to check out Nels Cline’s solo material live. It was also my very first time at Gesù, so I had no excuse to miss this one when we managed to score front row seats. It was a very nice experience, both guitar players being virtuoso. I was a bit less enthousiastic by some songs which sounded a bit too free jazz to my usual tastes, but I really enjoyed the performance a lot.

Sunday, 28 June 2015

Thor Harris - Sala Rossa - June 28th 2015

Band : Thor Harris
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 28th 2015
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I had absolutely no clue that Thor had released some music on his own when I first heared about tonight's show. As a matter of fact, tonight was Thor's very first solo performance ! The evening started by a reading from his new book followed by an exhaustive discussion with the audience on depression, then (after two opening acts) the show itself. It was a great performance, and towards the end of his improvised set, Thor invited Insect Ark and Echo Beach to join him on stage for a grand final. A very nice evening !

Insect Ark - Sala Rossa - June 28th 2015

Band : Insect Ark
Venue : Sala Rossa
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 28th 2015
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I had been extremely disappointed by my first experience with Insect Ark, but I am quite happy there has been a second time. The duo formula seems to work nicely and the set was more dynamic and quite seamless this time. Quite enjoyable.

Friday, 26 June 2015

Thisquietarmy - Turbo Haus - June 26th 2015

Band : Thisquietarmy
Venue : Turbo Haus
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 26th 2015
Grade : 2/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Tonight was my first time at this new venue in St-Henri. The decor is quite nice (an old bank), but you can not really see anything if you are not in front of the stage. Luckily for us the room had started to clear a bit due to the late hour Eric got on stage, so we managed to make our way up front. Halfway through the 50 minutes set, Eric was joined by the members of Show Of Beldam. The collaboration was a bit slow to start and the drone of Eric did not really seem to blend well with the metal of the others. The result was quite overpowering and I did not enjoy this collaboration at all, sorry Eric.

Friday, 19 June 2015

Hiss Tracts - Sala Rossa - June 19th 2015

Band : Hiss Tracts
Venue : Sala Rossa (Suoni Per Il Popolo)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 19th 2015
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Even if I have seen quite a few of these audio/visual collaborations with Karl Lemieux, tonight was the very first (and maybe only ?) show since they released the album on Constellation. The line up was Dave Gallant, Kevin Doria and another guy with film projections by Karl Lemieux. The 35 minutes show was nice as expected, although less intense and captivating than the the last one I saw at Musée D'art Contemporain a few years back with Jonathan Parent.

Thursday, 11 June 2015

Expo 70 - La Vitrola - June 11th 2015

Band : Expo 70
Venue : La Vitrola (Suoni Per Il Popolo)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 11th 2015
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : It was already passed midnight when show started. I kind of feel bad for him because we were ony 13 people in the room (including the bartenders) halfway through the set. The show itself was pretty ambient and minimal : Justin sat facing his amp in low light, his back to the audience.

Tuesday, 9 June 2015

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Théâtre Fairmount - June 9th 2015

Band : Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
Venue : Théâtre Fairmount
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 9th 2015
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : This was my first visit to the newly renovated Théâtre Fairmount. I did not notice much difference with the Cabaret Mile End (except for the bar and the ceiling). The performance was amazing as usual and the sound was so much better that last time at the Corona. I had a great time, except for the intoxicated audience members trying to push their way up front towards the end of the show.

Friday, 5 June 2015

J Mascis - Sala Rossa - June 5th 2015

Band : J Mascis
Venue : Sala Rossa (Suoni Per Il Popolo)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : June 5th 2015
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
Listen To Me
Me Again
Little Fury Things
Ammaring
Every Morning
Stumble
Get Me
Drifter
Heal The Star
Not The Same
Out There
Fade Into You
Blowing It
Not You Again
Alone
Just Like Heaven
The Wagon

Comments : Let's face it, J Mascis is definitely not the most entertaining performer to watch. Tonight's setlist (the same one on all the tour) was a pretty good mix of both Dinosaur Jr and his own songs, but also a cover of Mazzy Star's Fade Into You and my all time favourite cover of The Cure's Just Like Heaven. After a little while though, I started to find the show a bit boring.

Thursday, 21 May 2015

David J - Drawn & Quarterly - May 21st 2015

Band : David J
Venue : Drawn & Quarterly
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : May 21st 2015
Grade : n/a

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : Whereas I never had a big interest in David J's music outside of Bauhaus, tonight's reading was still a nice opportunity to hear him talk about his memoir. David read 3 passages from his book, followed by a short Q&A. While reading, he played a slowed down 9 hour version of Bela Lugosi's Dead from his laptop. David was very approchable and I had a good time.

Saturday, 16 May 2015

Diamond Version - Usine C - May 16th 2015

Band : Diamond Version
Venue : Usine C (Elektra)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : May 16th 2015
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : I saw Alva Noto for the first time 3 years ago at Elektra and it was a very nice experience, so I was looking forward to see him again. Tonight was also the very first North-American appearance of Diamond Version. Sadly, I was less convinced by this beat-oriented collaboration with Byetone than a solo performance. Halfway though the set, Atsuhiro Ito joined them on stage with an instrument made of a fluorescent tube. It was entertaining to watch at first, but way too repetitive and almost distracting after a little while.

Saturday, 2 May 2015

Acid Mothers Temple - La Vitrola - May 2nd 2015

Band : Acid Mothers Temple
Venue : La Vitrola
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : May 2nd 2015
Grade : 5/5

Setlist :
Dark Stars In The Dazzling Sky
Benzaiten
Pink Lady Lemonade
Cometary Orbital Drive

Comments : Another really fantastic AMT show. No big surprise here but extremely enjoyable as usual. Nice to see them again as a 5 piece band and I did not feel much difference with the new drummer Satoshima Nani who is now replacing Shimura Koji.

Friday, 1 May 2015

The Waterboys - Théâtre Corona - May 1st 2015

Band : The Waterboys
Venue : Théâtre Corona
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : May 1st 2015
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Destinies Entwined
Still A Freak
A Girl Called Johnny
November Tale
We Will Not Be Lovers
Nearest Thing to Hip
Rosalind (You Married The Wrong Guy)
Girl From The North Country
Glastonbury Song
The Girl Who Slept For Scotland
I Can See Elvis
Song Of Wandering Aengus
The Whole Of The Moon
Don't Bang The Drum
Long Strange Golden Road
Purple Rain
Fisherman's Blues

Comments : It was at least 20 years I hadn't listened to The Waterboys, but I thought it would be nice to see them live once. Well, I am really glad I went. It was great to hear The Whole Of The Moon, Don't Bang The Drum and Fisherman's Blues live after all these years and I really enjoyed their cover of Purple Rain as well. The band played for over 2 hours and I did not see the time go by. I will probably not listen to the new album after tonight but I had a great time.

Thursday, 30 April 2015

Karine Denault & Alexandre St-Onge - Centre Clark - April 30th 2015

Band : Karine Denault & Alexandre St-Onge
Venue : Centre Clark
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : April 30th 2015
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
Not I & Others

Comments : Tonight's event was more performance art than an actual live concert. No complains about it, it was a pretty good one.

Friday, 24 April 2015

H. de Heutz - Studio Daïmôn - April 24th 2015

Band : H. de Heutz
Venue : Studio Daïmôn (Fau Mardi)
Town (country) : Gatineau, QC (Canada)
Date : April 24th 2015
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : A very interesting performance by this Ottawa duo. Here again, the experience was enhanced by amazing live video manipulations by Guillaume Vallée.

Thisquietarmy - Studio Daïmôn - April 24th 2015

Band : Thisquietarmy
Venue : Studio Daïmôn (Fau Mardi)
Town (country) : Gatineau, QC (Canada)
Date : April 4th 2015
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : There is always something special about seeing Eric outside of Montreal. Tonight was no exception : a very intense set with amazing live video manipulations by Guillaume Vallée.

Saturday, 4 April 2015

Bill Nace - La Passe - April 4th 2015

Band : Bill Nace
Venue : La Passe
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : April 4th 2015
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : While no local promoter bothers to bring us Body/Head, it was absolutely great to finally get to see Bill Nace in Montreal. As expected, it was a short (20 minutes) and abstract solo guitar set, sometimes noise, sometimes ambient, definitely enjoyable.

Wednesday, 1 April 2015

1/4 Inch - O Patro Vys - April 1st 2015

Band : 1/4 Inch
Venue : O Patro Vys
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : April 1st 2015
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
n/a

Comments : It's been way too long since I saw these guys. Today, Eric & Nick performed as a duo without Mark. Their short and minimal 20 minutes set was part of the vernissage of Jeremy Gordaneer's exhibition called "Reverse Panorama". A very enjoyable, early and free event, and also my very first time at O Patro Vys.

Saturday, 7 March 2015

Philip Glass - Maison Symphonique De Montreal - March 7th 2015

Band : Philip Glass
Venue : Maison Symphonique De Montreal
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : March 7th 2015
Grade : 4/5

Setlist :
Concerto Fantasy (Orchestre Symphonique De Montreal)
Vers Où L’oiseau Migrera ? (Orchestre Symphonique De Montreal)
Jaan E Maryam (Orchestre Symphonique De Montreal)
La Péri (Orchestre Symphonique De Montreal)
Mad Rush (Philip Glass)

Comments : I was extremely lucky to score a couple of tickets for tonight's very sold out concert. I don't usually attend classical concerts so tonight was my first (and probably only ?) time at Maison Symphonique. Nevertheless, the venue is absolutely beautiful and the sound is really great. It is also extremely enjoyable to sit through a whole show without anyone talking. I was a bit disappointed that Philip Glass did not join the OSM when they performed Concerto Fantasy, but watching him play Mad Rush was definitely worth it.
