David J - Drawn & Quarterly - May 21st 2015

Band : David J
Venue : Drawn & Quarterly
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : May 21st 2015
Grade : n/a

Setlist :

Comments : Whereas I never had a big interest in David J's music outside of Bauhaus, tonight's reading was still a nice opportunity to hear him talk about his memoir. David read 3 passages from his book, followed by a short Q&A. While reading, he played a slowed down 9 hour version of Bela Lugosi's Dead from his laptop. David was very approchable and I had a good time.

Diamond Version - Usine C - May 16th 2015

Band : Diamond Version
Venue : Usine C (Elektra)
Town (country) : Montreal, QC (Canada)
Date : May 16th 2015
Grade : 3/5

Setlist :

Comments : I saw Alva Noto for the first time 3 years ago at Elektra and it was a very nice experience, so I was looking forward to see him again. Tonight was also the very first North-American appearance of Diamond Version. Sadly, I was less convinced by this beat-oriented collaboration with Byetone than a solo performance. Halfway though the set, Atsuhiro Ito joined them on stage with an instrument made of a fluorescent tube. It was entertaining to watch at first, but way too repetitive and almost distracting after a little while.

Comments : It was at least 20 years I hadn't listened to The Waterboys, but I thought it would be nice to see them live once. Well, I am really glad I went. It was great to hear The Whole Of The Moon, Don't Bang The Drum and Fisherman's Blues live after all these years and I really enjoyed their cover of Purple Rain as well. The band played for over 2 hours and I did not see the time go by. I will probably not listen to the new album after tonight but I had a great time.
